PlayStation-VR-432211Sony has revealed that they have over 200 developers working on 100 new titles for the PlayStation VR.

Having failed to make a major announcement at CES 2016, Sony’s chief executive Kaz Hirai explained that the new device had built a lot of support from third-party developers who are busy working on at least as many titles as their rivals, the Oculus Rift.

Hirai also shared his thoughts on why Virtual Reality was set to take off in 2016, adding that new tech would add to the already immersive experience that the PlayStation 4 provides.

He told the BBC: “Once we have a lot of people who are really into virtual reality through games, then I think we will be able to expand beyond gaming…

“I think the fact that we have more than 200 developers signed up to the PlayStation VR program who are working on probably more than 100 titles that will play on PlayStation VR, is a testament to the kind of support that we’re getting from the content creation community on PlayStation VR.”

The Occulus virtual reality headset sold out its day one stock in just 14 minutes despite being priced at $599, and creator Palmer Luckey has now confirmed that it will receive more than 100 game titles by the end of the year. Each Oculus Rift headset ships with copies of Lucky’s Tale and Eve: Valkyrie, as well as an Xbox One controller, sensor and Oculus Remote.

However, Sony are confident that their PlayStation VR will be setting the pace once it is given a release date. It is believed that the company has sold 36 million PlayStation 4 units, meaning that it outnumbers VR-capable PCs by around three-to-one.

And Sony Chief Executive Kaz Hirai revealed that, like the Oculus Rift, PS VR is also expecting to land about 100 games due to the huge support from third-part developers, meaning that will be able to stand toe-to-toe with any rivals.
“It’ll be a great product coming out later this year. For the PlayStation we offer a very immersive gameplay experience on the PS4.

“It’s all about making a better gameplay experience which sets us aside from everyone else. We’ve sold close to 36 million units, that’s a huge audience we will cater to.

“Once we have more people into VR through gaming we will be able to expand, especially due to the amount of content we create at Sony Entertainment.”
