The Borgias, starring Jeremy Irons as Pope Alexander VI, opened in the United States to strong ratings on Showtime this past weekend, delivering the network’s biggest audience for a freshman drama series premiere in seven years.

Recent international sales for The Borgias include deals in Germany, Greece, Israel, Italy, Korea, Turkey, and pan region agreements throughout Africa, Eastern Europe, Latin America and the Middle East. This builds on previous announced deals with Sky Atlantic in the United Kingdom and Ireland, and with Telecinco in Spain.

“This is a series tailor-made for the international market,” said Armando Nuñez, President, CBS Studios International. “From the subject matter to the production values to the star power, The Borgias is a project that stood out from the beginning and the sales momentum soon followed. Showtime’s reputation for premium, high quality, original programming is growing around the world and this project clearly lived up to that billing.”
