Atlus has announced that role-playing game Shin Megami Tensei IV: Apocalypse (released as Shin Megami Tensei IV: Final in Japan) will be released for the Nintendo 3DS in the Americas this summer. While the game will overlap with 2013’s Shin Megami Tensei IV, players will not need to have played the original game to understand Apocalypse. The game will be released physical and digitally for $49.99/CA$64.99.

As its title suggests, the game is set in a post-apocalyptic Tokyo. The player will step into the role of a Hunter cadet who is killed by a demon before being resurrected by a mysterious god named Dagda. In exchange for a second shot at life, the player is sworn in servitude to Dagda. Characters from Shin Megami Tensei IV are confirmed to make appearances, and the series’ classic combat system will also return.
Players will be able to battle using demons, gods, magic, and guns, with over 60 alleged hours of content on offer. A choice system will allow players to go the route of either peace or anarchy, and an updated version of the series’ familiar demon fusion system will be featured.

Shin Megami Tensei IV was released in Japan and North America in 2013 for 3DS and made its way over to the Europe region more than a year later. The game was well-received in GameSpot’s review, praised for its twisted world, challenging combat, and the large variety of demons on offer to recruit and fuse.
