SanDisk Release Ultra SSD to Retailers

SanDisk has started shipping its latest SSDs to retailers. The SanDisk Ultra SATA II range is being pitched at enthusiasts interested in upgrading their own desktops or notebooks or extending the life of an older piece of equipment. SanDisk argue that replacing a traditional spinning hard drive with an SSD is more cost-effective than buying a new computer in many cases.

The new drives come in three capacities, a 60GB ($130), 120GB ($220) and 240GB ($450). SanDisk claim that the drives can read at 280MB/sec and can write at 270MB/sec. The drives can also achieve up to 3Gb/s random speeds, which should help to dramatically boost OS and application boot times over a spinning hard drive.

New SSD Features

  • Fast performance: the drive’s up to 280 megabyte per second (MB/sec) sequential read and 270 MB/sec sequential write speeds deliver fast data-transfer rates; up to 3 Gb/s random speeds surpass other SATA II SSDs and enable faster system boot and application launch times
  • Power efficiency: the drive’s low power consumption extends battery life, and with no moving parts, the SSD offers silent operation
  • Long-term reliability: Mean Time Between Failure (MTBF) of up to 1,000,000 hours

The drives can be ordered online now from retailers including New Egg.
