Samsung said on Wednesday that its SM1625 20nm-class SSD has been certified by VMware as an optimized solution for VMware Virtual SAN. This model is Samsung’s very first dual-ported SAS SSD with storage capacities ranging from 100 GB to 800 GB. Samsung said it will continue to partner with VMware to offer other devices like V-NAND and NVMe SSDs for use with VMware infrastructure as well.
“We are very enthusiastic about this SM1625 certification as the basis for partnering with VMware to offer a SAS storage solution for the enterprise,” said JaeHyeong Lee, vice president of memory product planning & application engineering, Samsung Electronics. “We will work closely with not only our OEM customers but also global software companies such as VMware in looking to develop high performing and environmentally-friendly IT systems for data center applications and enterprise storage.”
The SM1625 is designed for use in external storage systems for high availability environments. The SM1625 features up to 38,000 sustained random write IOPS, and randomly reads up to 101,000 IOPS when using both ports. The SSD also supposedly writes data sequentially at up to 595 MB/s and reads at up to 925 MB/s when using both ports.
“SM1625 enterprise-class SSDs use specially engineered NAND flash memory to maximize write endurance, with up to 10,200 Terabytes Written in a random workload environment, providing more than 170 times the endurance of a typical MLC-based SSD,” the product sheet states. “This translates into long-lasting, sustained performance for your blade servers and enables outstanding reliability through the use of advanced wear-leveling and garbage-collection algorithms.”
By utilizing 20nm-class technology, Samsung’s SM1625 SSD supposedly provides up to 200 times greater power efficiency than conventional (15k rpm) hard drives, and also comes with power loss protection to ensure data is safe in a power outage. The SM1625 is available in densities of 100 GB, 200 GB, 400 GB and 800 GB.
