Sony is said to be prepping a massive 84-inch LCD flatscreen TV. According to CNET’s sources, the new Sony set will be the largest the company has ever shipped, as well as the first to utilize 4K technology. Sony unveiled its first 4K projector earlier this year, and like that device, the TV will pack an incredible 4,096×3,072 pixels – or four times the number of pixels in a 1080p display, or 12,582,912 pixels.

According to sources familiar with the TV, it will also use side-lit LED lighting, which will also help to keep the display thin. Removable speakers are also said to be included. However, the TV is all about its new display resolution, which is something that Sony is aiming to pitch as a key differentiator in the high-end segment of the market. It will likely also go some way to rebuilding Sony’s battered image in the TV segment, where it has been swamped by Samsung and LG.

The in addition to the 4K projector, Sony now also has Blu-ray player that supports a 4K output using upscaling image processing, in addition to 4K native professional video cameras. As might expected, the cost will be quite prohibitive with rumors suggesting that it could be priced as high as $30,000, making it about $4,000 more expensive than its 4K projector. Along with the slightly more attractive price, the 4K projector may also be a more practical proposition for those with the cash.
