Roku Set-Tops to Get Live Time Warner Cable TV Streaming

A leak late Friday has revealed that Time Warner Cable is planning to offer live TV on media hubs. The Engadget tip had Roku being the first of multiple devices that would stream IP-based TV. The Roku implementation wasn’t clarified, but would presumably go through a custom Roku channel.

Other details, such as when it would go live or whether it would have an on-demand component, weren’t given out. Other devices similarly weren’t mentioned.

Internet streaming to media hubs, game consoles, and other fixed devices has picked up momentum, partly through Xbox 360 options. While it doesn’t have as much practical utility as mobile streaming, it has the advantage of skipping a complicated cable install for multi-TV setups and, potentially, the ability to skip a traditional set-top or DVR altogether.
