Rockstar has finally responded to the ill-gotten gains of cheaters, hackers, and modders in GTA Online by sucking trillions of in-game dollars out of the offenders’ virtual bank accounts. In what is definitely not a coincidence, today Rockstar also posted an update to their suspension and ban policy, stating that players with a temporary ban will find their online characters, inventory, property, and progress reset when the ban lifts.

The Rockstar Support page, under the heading “GTA Online October 2016 Illegitimately Gained In-Game Money Removal,” posts the following question, which one can assume they have received some version of a great many times today: “Why did I receive an alert when logging into GTA Online saying that illegitimately gained in-game money was removed from my shared bank?

Answer

To keep the gameplay environment fair we have removed illegitimately gained in-game money from player accounts. If you received an alert saying that your shared bank balance was adjusted, that is because you had illegitimate funds in your account.

Some players are also reporting that money gained from exploiting glitches, not from using hacks or modded accounts, has also been removed, though others say it has not.

Meanwhile, the update to the suspension and ban policy can be found here, and states: “If you are temporarily suspended from GTA Online, you will not be able to access GTA Online from the moment you are suspended. Your suspension expiration date is shown on the splash screen after being returned to Story Mode following an attempt to play GTA Online. In addition, your GTA Online character(s) will be reset. All GTA Online progress, property and inventory will be reset.”

Following a temporary ban and loss of progress, players committing a second infraction will find themselves permanently banned.
