Ricoh GXR A12 Camera Module Uses Leica Lenses

Ricoh has brought out a new mount module, the A12, for its GXR camera. The module lets a photographer use Leica M series lenses with the GXR body. The mount incorporates an APS-C sized, 12.3-megapixel CMOS sensor as well as a focal plane shutter, which can be used instead of the camera’s electronic shutter.

The GXR was introduced in late 2009. It is unique amongst cameras with interchangeable components. With most cameras, it is only the lens that is swapped out. With the GXR, along with the lens, the user can swap out a module that contains a different sensor as well as the needed lens mount adapter. In this way, the photographer can use a CMOS sensor for low-light situations, and a CCD sensor, which is better suited for action and motion, when using a telephoto lens.

The GXR A12 module will be available on September 9. The price has been set at $649.
