Earlier this week, Google made its Project Tango tablet available to everyone via the Google Store for $512. While many expected this price drop and public availability to lead to a successor at Google I/O, the company kept quiet and didn’t address its Tango initiative.

Now, Qualcomm this evening has taken the wraps off of its own Tango smartphone platform powered by the Snapdragon 810.

The Project Tango smartphone platform from Qualcomm will contain a camera, gyroscope, and accelerometer to provide the motion tracking and other sensor features of the platform. The device will be able to give developers the ability to track 3D motion of a device while simultaneously creating a map of the environment, which is essentially the motive behind the Project Tango initiative.

Developers will also be able to take advantage of the tools available via the Qualcomm Developer Network to enhance the performance of Android applications and Tango. More information regarding Qualcomm’s Project Tango efforts can be seen here. The platform is expected to arrive later this Summer.

Qualcomm Snapdragon 810 processor will power Google’s next generation Project Tango smartphone development platform. Project Tango devices combine the camera, gyroscope, and accelerometer to estimate six degree of freedom motion tracking, providing developers the ability to track 3D motion of a device while simultaneously creating a map of the environment. This capability is especially useful for applications such as real-world 3D gaming, indoor navigation, and virtual and augmented reality experiences.

Developers will be able to utilize tools from Qualcomm Developer Network to take advantage of features included in the premium tier Snapdragon 810 processor and enhance the performance of Android applications, such as access to the Qualcomm Hexagon DSP via the Hexagon SDK as well as the Qualcomm Vuforia mobile vision platform.
