Project Ara Plagued by Faulty Magnets

Motorola Unveils Project AraThe team managing Google’s Project Ara has provided a possible reason behind the project’s delayed arrival.

“No more electropermanent magnets,” said the team via its official Twitter account, followed by the hashtag #FailedTheDropTest.

Project Ara is a modular smartphone that will allow users to swap out hardware components via removable modules.

In order to keep the modules in place, Google turned to electropermanent magnets, which are released by using software on the phone. As the tweet implies, however, the magnets may not be strong enough to survive drop tests. In other words, the handset breaks apart when dropped.

Project Ara followed up its initial tweet with one that read, “We are testing a signature experience to attach/detach modules. #WeHopeYouLikeIt.”

Google recently delayed Project Ara’s launch to 2016 and said it is looking for a different launch location. It was originally expected to begin beta testing in Puerto Rico.
