Nintendo has done something out of the ordinary and created an app for the Apple App Store and Android Market. The app is a game called Pokémon Say Tap? BW and will be the first official Pokemon game available on hardware other than Nintendo’s own. The Japanese company teamed up with Game Freak on creating the game, which can be played on Android smartphones, iPods, iPhones and iPads.

The game uses music and on-screen Pokémon cards in a timing game rather than the typical light RPG of the series. It will be free and is due for release later this summer.

Whether this means Nintendo will release more apps for mobile platforms remains to be seen, although it’s less likely. Nintendo’s performance as a company has traditionally been tied to hardware like the 3DS. Executives from the company have also regularly slammed smartphones for allegedly devaluing gaming by reducing the price and complexity. Nintendo is used to selling roughly console-level games for $30 or $40 where many Android and iOS games are $10 or less and usually more casual.
