yooka-laylee-logo-640x360Playtonic Games has announced that they’re teaming up with Team 17 to help with “specific support areas” of Yooka-Laylee. What does that mean? According to the blog post announcing the partnership, Team 17 will be responsible for the technical side of game development, including certification, localization, and store management.

For fans, this means that Playtonic Games can focus on actually developing the game, while Team 17 handles all the technical aspects related to distribution and getting the game ready for the public. According to studio head Gavin Price, the partnership is needed because Playtonic wants to make sure fans get level of service they deserve.

Team17 has significant experience in making the most of releasing a game. Personally I feel it would be a great shame if after our great Kickstarter success, we delivered on our promise of a great game and then it underperformed sales-wise because we didn’t have the knowledge, or made a mistake in the way we released or marketed the game. Thanks to our Kickstarter backers, we’re on a really positive trajectory and Team17 is acting like a booster for us on top of that by handling non-game dev tasks.

Despite the wording and hinting that there could be a physical release of the game, Price is quick to reiterate that there are currently no plans for a physical release for the game. Team17 does have experience with boxed retail games, but Playtonic is focusing on making sure the digital launch is the best possible.
