PhotoFast’s iFlashDrive for iPads, iPhones Hits the US

PhotoFast teamed up with Sanho on Tuesday to bring the iFlashDrive to the US and the UK. The add-on is billed as the only drive of its kind to give iPads, iPhones, and iPods two-way storage. An officially sanctioned Dock Connector links as much as 32GB of storage up to the device with a USB port for when the content needs to be shuttled to or from a computer.  A free companion iOS app helps transfer files in storage both on the iOS hardware and off.

Although it’s unclear how much approval the iOS app’s file system access entails, it works with as recent a firmware as iOS 5 and supports at least an iPhone 3GS or third-generation iPod touch. It can recognize the Apple-supported media formats as well as a handful of others. Performance is the primary bottleneck: due to the transfer standards, the add-on won’t transfer faster than 100KB per second and so won’t work as well for HD video or other large syncs.

Pre-orders are starting now for 8GB, 16GB, and 32GB versions that cost $100, $150, and $200 each. New orders should arrive in about two weeks.
