Nokia has launched its new 41-megapixel camera at its New York event, confirming a number of specifications leaked earlier today. The Nokia Lumia 1020 improves upon the camera used in the PureView 808 by adding six-lens Zeiss optics, optical image stabilization, a backside illuminated sensor, and a number of other features to the Windows 8 smartphone.

The Lumia 1020 can take 38-megapixel images, with a choice of 4:3 and 16:9 aspect ratios, and takes an oversampled 5-megapixel photo at the same time for quicker sharing through social networks. Capable of capturing video at 1080p at up to 4x zoom or 720p at 6x zoom, it can record video with minimal blur and low-distortion audio at high volume levels, through Nokia Rich Recording. The accompanying Pro Camera app allows for more advanced controls over the image, including the ability to adjust the Xenon flash, shutter speed, white balance, exposure, ISO, and focus, along with various editing options and other camera apps. On the front is a 1.2-megapixel camera, which can also be used for stills and video capture.

Aside from the camera, the Lumia 1020 houses a 4.5-inch AMOLED 1280×768 display with ClearBlack and Corning Gorilla Glass 3. Inside is a 1.5GHz dual-core Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 with 2GB of RAM and 32GB of internal storage, along with radios for Wi-Fi, LTE, Bluetooth 3.0, and NFC, and GPS and GLONASS. Power is supplied by a 2,000mAh battery, which can be wirelessly charged through its cover.

At the same time, Nokia revealed its optional Camera Grip for the Lumia 1020, which provides an extra 1,020mAh of battery power, a dedicated shutter button, and a Tripod mount.

The Lumia 1020 will arrive on AT&T on July 26th, with preorders commencing on July 16th, priced at $300 on a two-year contract. Carriers in a number of European markets and China will also carry the smartphone. The Nokia Camera Grip will cost $79.
