Nokia Announces the Lumia 920 as their New Flagship Window Phone

Nokia has taken the wraps off its new Windows Phone flagship, the Lumia 920. The high-end device sports a curved, 4.5-inch Pure Motion HD+ touchscreen with 720p resolution and is powered by a dual-core, 1.5GHz Snapdragon S4 processor. It includes a built-in wireless inductive charging system and an NFC chip for close-proximity, wireless data transfers.

For the first time in the Lumia range Nokia has incorporated a PureView-branded rear camera, although it’s ‘only’ rated at eight megapixels rather then the 41-megapixels shooter found on the 808 PureView phone. Still, the 920 will have the ability to shoot 1080p videos, while it also utilizes a floating lens that offers on-board hardware stabilization. Nokia says that one of the highlights of the new PureView camera is its low light performance.

A number of unique photo modes will let users take multiple photos and then have the phone remove moving objects so only the background remains. An example of the Smart Shoot feature involved a gallery display with onlookers walking around in front of exhibits, with the phone removing them and showing just the exhibits, taken from multiple shots.

The design is similar to the Lumia 800 in that the glass screen blends smoothly into the polycarbonate body. It’s less matte than the previous Lumia phones, opting for a glossy finish. The screen will have multiple sensitivity modes, capable of reading touch inputs even through gloves or mittens, which is useful in winter months.

Some of the exclusive Nokia apps include Nokia City Lens, which is an augmented reality system that will superimpose images on top of a street view to suggest restaurants, stores, and other establishments. Nokia Maps will get the same feature, along with offline support that includes voice turn-by-turn directions. The transition will be automatic when the phone goes from a vertical to a horizontal orientation or vice versa.

Nokia says that the dual-core Snapdragon S4 chip is 30 percent more efficient than quad-core chips and, together with the 2,000mAh battery, the handset will last a full, “average” day. The Lumia 920 will be available in yellow, red, white, grey, and black though pricing and ship dates are yet to be revealed. Both pentaband LTE and HSPA+ variants will ship in various markets later this year.
