Nikon has added another camera to its Nikon 1 mirrorless range, one which introduces Ultra HD video recording to the company’s product lines for the first time. The retro-styled Nikon 1 J5 is able to record 4K-resolution video at 15 frames per second, using the combination of its 20.8-megapixel CMOS sensor and the Expeed 5A image processor.
Using a hybrid autofocus system, the J5 can shoot at up to 20fps with continuous autofocus, or up to 60fps with fixed focus, with the AF system using 171 autofocus points, along with 105 phase-detection AF points. The camera has an ISO range of 160-12,800 and a selection of still capture modes, including five scene modes, 14 effects, and a Smart Photo Selector which helps select the best photographs from a selection of 20 taken in just a second.
While it is capable of 4K resolution video, it is also able to record more typical 1080p video at 60fps, and can also capture clips at 120fps. Much like the still images, video can be captured in a number of different modes, with fast motion, jump-cut, and four-second movie options, time-lapses created rom up to 300 photographs,, and a four-second slow-motion clip called a “living image.”
Capable of accepting 1 Nikkor lenses, it has a rear 3-inch 1037k-dot touchscreen display, which can be tilted up 180 degrees for self portraits, or 86 degrees down to shoot from higher vantage points. Wi-Fi and NFC connectivity is also included, with transfers to mobile devices and remote control of the camera also available.
Shipping “soon,” the Nikon 1 J5 will cost $500 when bundled with a 10-30mm lens.
