Netflix Touts New Android App

Netflix has announced a new and more immersive version of its Android smartphone app.

The updated app is designed to more closely mirror the tablet experience, which was released late last year. Netflix has added more available TV and movie titles and galleries and made it easier to search and browse.

The new “Continue Watching” row allows you to scroll through thumbnails of the shows or films they paused mid-view, then tap and pick up where you left off. If you don’t know what you want to watch next, just tap on any image for more details about the title – plot synopsis and actors, as well as an entire list of episodes for instant access.

Double tapping a thumbnail will immediately begin playing whatever show or flick you choose. A magnifying-glass search button remains available at the top of the screen, while a browse option is also positioned to allow users to skim through genres, including children’s programming organized by age group.

“We’re really excited about our new experience on Android,”Chris Jaffe, Netflix’s director of product innovation, said in a blog post.

The video streaming and DVD rental company understands that more people use Netflix on mobile devices, citing the millions of members already using smartphones to instantly watch movies and TV shows.

“We are always working to improve the experience so Netflix members discover more great titles and watch more,” Jaffe wrote.

The Netflix Android app is currently available for free download and upgrade in the Google Play store.
