Netflix ISP Speed Index for January 2017 Has Some Major Changes Outside the US

Below are some are some highlights from January’s Netflix ISP Speed Index – their monthly update on which Internet Service Providers (ISPs) provide the best prime-time Netflix streaming experience.

While there wasn’t any major movement in in the US index in January, there was some action outside the US.

  • In India, 7 Star Digital rose four spots to No. 3, increasing its average monthly speed to 2.06 Megabits per second (Mbps), up from 1.77 Mbps in December.
  • Entel in Chile saw the biggest speed gain at 0.56 Mbps, raising its average monthly speed to 2.20 Mbps, recovering from its decline in December to 1.64 Mbps.
  • Indonesia’s MyRepublic maintained its top spot with speed climbing to 3.81 Mbps, up from 3.54 Mbps the month prior.
  • In Spain, Telefonica-Movistar and R both experienced speed declines. Telefonica-Movistar’s speed decreased by 0.68 Mbps, its average monthly speed slowing to 1.86 Mbps from 2.54 Mbps the month prior. R saw its speed slow to 2.70 Mbps, down from 3.27 Mbps last month.
  • Thailand’s True Internet took the top spot for the first time, moving up one spot from No. 2. True Internet’s speed increased to 3.58 Mbps, up from 3.47 Mbps last month. Thailand also climbed three spots to 20th place in our country rankings.
  • In Taiwan, HiNet secured the No. 1 spot again (moving up from No. 2 last month), increasing its average monthly speed to 3.31 Mbps, up from 3.23 Mbps the month prior. Hoshin Multimedia’s speeds climbed to 2.92 Mbps, up from 2.71 Mbps in December, jumping one spot to No. 4. These speed gains helped Taiwan climb two spots to 27th place in the country ranking,
  • In Luxembourg, with Visual Online reclaiming the No. 1 spot (jumping from No. 2 last month) and Tango rising three spots to No. 2.

Please Note The Netflix ISP Speed Index is a measure of prime time Netflix performance on a particular ISP and not a measure of overall performance for other services/data that may travel across the specific ISP network. Faster Netflix performance generally means better picture quality, quicker start times and fewer interruptions.
