Miramax First with Multi-Movie Facebook Rentals

The latest company to offer movie rentals on Facebook is Miramax, over its Miramax eXperience app. The largest venture of its kind — Warner offers much less — it offers 20 titles for rent in the US and 10 each in the UK and Turkey. The rented movies can be watched on iPads through a browser-based player made by Ooyala, along with Google TV devices.

France and Germany will get the service soon.

The price is 30 Facebook credits, or the equivalent of $3. Users then have 30 days to watch it, or 48 hours once they start. Now available in all three markets are Chicago, Cold Mountain, Spy Kids and Good Will Hunting. The US alone will get No Country for Old Men and Pulp Fiction, among others. A new batch arrives in September.

The Miramax eXperience app  has a social game in it that lets users cast friends in Miramax movies, unlocking bonus content as they play.

Facebook gets 30 percent of the money for Facebook credits, with 70 going to Miramax. The app is currently in beta form now, but is said to work well. The biggest issue with it is that is that resuming a movie from a specific spot isn’t possible, meaning users need to scroll to where they left off themselves.
