MakerBot Now Taking Pre-Orders for MakerBot Digitizer

Posted by at 4:09 pm on August 22, 2013

MakerBot today announced the availability of the previously announced MakerBot Digitizer on its website. The device capable of scanning an eight-inch tall object has commenced the pre-order process, with shipping expected mid-October.

The MakerBot Digitizer takes a real-life object, scans it using a camera and two lasers, and creates a 3D digital file without any need for design or 3D software experience. The MakerBot Digitizer Desktop 3D Scanner  is optimized for and works seamlessly with MakerBot’s Replicator Desktop 3D Printers and MakerBot Thingiverse. The new 3D scanner can be used in the office, manufacturing space, workshop, classroom, or in the home to jumpstart the modeling and prototyping process and create artworks, sculptures and figurines, as well as memorializing keepsakes and 3D archiving.

The MakerBot Digitizer Desktop 3D Scanner features software to create watertight 3D models in as few as two mouse clicks, output to standard 3D design file formats that can be modified and improved in Autodesk MeshMixer, and easy uploading to MakerBot’s online repository of 3D objects Thingiverse.com.

The current price for the MakerBot Digitizer Desktop 3D Scanner is $1,400 plus an optional $150 for MakerBot Digitizer MakerCare, a service and support program.
