Lenovo has introduced the LePad S2005 5-inch Android 2.3 (Gingerbread) at a Chinese launch. The device joins the Samsung Galaxy Note in a market niche that combines the display size approaching a tablet with a device that can also function as an oversize phone. However, Lenovo has chosen to market the device as a compact tablet in the first instance, with its LePad branding evidence of this.

It will be branded as the IdeaTab for international markets, although news of when it will ship to North America hasn’t yet been detailed. It will, however, hit the Chinese market in the next couple of days.

The LePad S2005 display is an LTPS-type with a 800×480 resolution and which offers a wide 178-degree viewing angle. It is powered by a 1.2GHz Qualcomm dual-core processor matched with 1GB of RAM. Incorporated into the rear is a 5-megapixel camera capable of 1080p video, while on the front a 1.3-megapixel camera can be found for video calls.

Connectivity options include a micro-USB port, micro-HDMI port and HSPA+ radio. The battery has a 1,680mAh capacity, which is packed into a body only 9.6mm-thin and weighs 198 grams
