Kong: Skull Island Is King of the Box Office

Warner Bros. Pictures and Legendary‘s Kong: Skull Island was king at the domestic box office with an estimated $61 million from 3,846 theaters, an average of $15,865 per location. Internationally, the film earned $81.6 million on 20,400 screens in 65 markets, for a worldwide total of $142.6 million its first weekend. $12.4 million of the global total came from 674 IMAX screens in 63 markets, which marks the second-highest grossing global March opening ever in IMAX without China.

The James Mangold-directed Logan (20th Century Fox) dropped to second place in North America with $37.9 million, for a total of $152.7 million after two weeks. Overseas, the film added $70 million from 22,188 screens in 79 markets to bring its international total to $285.6 million and worldwide sum to $438.3 million. Made for $97 million, the R-rated film stars Hugh Jackman in his last appearance as Wolverine, Patrick Stewart in his last turn as Charles Xavier, Boyd Holbrook, Richard E. Grant, Stephen Merchant, Eriq La Salle, Elise Neal, Elizabeth Rodriguez and Dafne Keen.

Universal Pictures and Blumhouse Productions’ Get Out added another $21.1 million in the third spot its third weekend to take its total to an impressive $111 million. Made for just $4.5 million, the Jordan Peele film stars Daniel Kaluuya, Allison Williams, Bradley Whitford, Caleb Landry Jones and Catherine Keener.

Fourth place belonged to Lionsgate’s faith-based drama The Shack, starring Sam Worthington and Octavia Spencer, which earned $10.1 million and has grossed $32.3 million after two weeks.

Rounding out the top five was Warner Bros. Pictures’ The LEGO Batman Movie, which brought in $7.8 million its fifth weekend for a total of $159 million. Made for $80 million, the Chris McKay-directed film features the voices of Will Arnett, Zach Galifianakis, Michael Cera, Rosario Dawson, and Ralph Fiennes.

Impressing in limited release was the Kristen Stewart-starrer Personal Shopper, which earned $92,516 from just four theaters, an average of $23,129 per theater. Written and directed by Olivier Assayas, the R-rated film was released by IFC Films and co-stars Anders Danielsen Lie, Lars Eidinger, Nora von Waldstätten, Pamela Betsy Cooper and Benjamin Biolay.
