Amazon has announced a major update of the Kindle iOS app, 2.9. The most important changes apply exclusively to the iPad, which now has access to the same magazines and newspapers available on the Kindle Fire. This includes over 400 publications, such as Men’s Health and Popular Science. People can either subscribe to content or buy issues individually.

iPad owners are also gaining access to full-formatted textbooks that mimic the layout of their print counterparts. The iPad editions moreover support notetaking, highlighting, and zooming and panning, as well as interactive tables of contents.

Several changes apply to all iOS devices. The app now syncs with a user’s “Send-to-Kindle” email address, to which people can mail documents for later downloading on compatible iOS and Kindle hardware. PDF files can be newly opened either via Send-to-Kindle, or by manual loading through iTunes. The Kindle PDF reader supports tables of contents and thumbnail browsing.

Amazon has lastly upgraded the library view with tabs for books, documents and the newsstand. Kindle for iOS is a free download from the App Store.
