Kaspersky Updates Anti-Virus 2011 to Work with Lion

Users of Kaspersky Anti-Virus 2011 for Mac will receive an automatic update which will upgrade the product to be compatible with Mac OS X 10.7 Lion, the company announced today. The program, which detects and prevents Macs from spreading Windows viruses, and other types of malware for Windows, Mac and Linux, can also be manually updated by new users or those who have turned the automatic updates off.

The software employs cloud-based updating and detection technologies to quickly respond to new threats, finding and removing malicious software for any of the three major operating systems. This helps prevent the spread of multi-platform malware, such as the “MacDefender” trojan that, though Mac-specific, was adapted from a similar Windows malware.

Though fairly new to the Mac platform, Kaspersky anti-virus software has been around for a long time on the Windows platform and is generally well-reviewed. The program requires an Intel Mac running OS X 10.5 or higher, and requires 512MB of free RAM. A one-year subscription version of the product costs $40 for a single Mac, or $50 for a three-Mac license and subscription.
