The ratio of new Android and iOS devices jumped well over ten times on Christmas weekend, Localytics found Tuesday. About 12.5 times more iOS devices were seen on the weekend. Much of the growth came from the iPod touch, where 21 times more were being tracked that weekend.

About 14 times more iPhones were on the network. Localytics didn’t break out iPad growth by itself.

Android also saw an uptick from the period, but its growth rate varied wildly depending on the country.

Regions where growth occurred sharply. Android had growth in the largest number of countries, growing faster in 14 out of the top 20 countries, but the areas where Apple led were often larger markets. Germany, Italy, Malaysia, the UK, and the US all saw iOS move the fastest. Samsung’s home territory of South Korea gave it an expected lead, where Android grew 80 percent more, while Sony Ericsson’s homelands of Japan and Sweden both advanced 45 percent further.

In absolute terms, Flurry tracked a 353 percent hike in combined Android and iOS activations on Christmas Day, going from an average of 1.5 million for most of December to 6.8 million just on December 25. App downloads across the both grew a united 125 percent from an average of 108 million a day to 242 million.

Christmas is often considered the biggest day of the year for device additions and app downloads. Such a large increase, suggests both Apple and Google might see a larger reward than usual.
