GoPro has launched its first new additions to its action camera line after filing its IPO. The Hero4 range follows on from the Hero3+ collection, with the Black and Silver editions offering functionality better suited towards professional applications, while a new entry-level Hero is a budget-priced version for those wanting a cheap waterproof camera.

The Hero4 Black is able to record 4K-resolution video at 30fps, or alternately 2.7K at 50fps, or 1080p at 120fps, with new Night Lapse and Night Photo modes aimed at helping with low-light situations. Offering twice the processing power of the Hero3+ Black, as well as a new microphone with almost double the dynamic range, it can capture 12MP photographs at up to 30fps, and while it has an updated user interface, it also includes built-in Wi-Fi and Bluetooth connectivity for use with smartphone apps or the Smart Remote.

The cheaper Hero4 Silver offers similar functionality to the Black edition, with a few small changes. Video recorded in 4K is limited to just 15fps, though 2.7K is available at 30fps, 1080p at 60fps, and 720p at 120fps. More notably, the Silver also includes a rear touchscreen display, allowing for video playback and previews directly on the camera rather than using a separate display, as well as more control over camera settings.

Both the Black and Silver models will be shipping in standard, Surf, and Music editions, with the difference being the included accessories. The mounts in the Music bundle are said to be designed with stage equipment in mind, including removable instrument mounts and a microphone stand mount, while the Surf version switches these out for a surfboard mount. Shipping on October 5th, the Hero4 Black will cost $500, while the Hero4 Silver will be priced at $400.

Lastly, the new Hero is able to record 1080p at 30fps and 720p at 60fps, and has a burst mode which shoots up to five photographs in one second. While it includes more basic low-light and Time Lapse modes compared to the new Hero4 cameras, the 3.9-ounce Hero benefits from being integrated with a waterproof case capable of going to a depth of 131 feet and protecting the camera from dirt and sand. Shipping at the same time as the others, the new Hero costs $130.
