Google is open sourcing its DeepMind Lab to the artificial intelligence research community.

Described as a “3D game-like platform,” DeepMind Lab serves as a testing ground for building smarter AI.

For six years, DeepMind has been working on AI that can excel at arcade games like Space Invaders and Pac-Man, as well as complex Chinese board game Go. But it has also “invested considerable effort toward building rich simulated environments to serve as ‘laboratories’ for AI research,” it said in a blog post.

“Now we are open-sourcing our flagship platform, DeepMind Lab, so the broader research community can make use of it,” the company said.

“Artificial general intelligence research in DeepMind Lab emphasizes navigation, memory, 3D vision from a first-person viewpoint, motor control, planning, strategy, time, and fully autonomous agents that must learn for themselves what tasks to perform by exploring their environment.”

Combining these factors, however, is a big challenge, Google says. But “DeepMind Lab is highly customizable and extendable. New levels can be authored with off-the-shelf editor tools.”

The video below highlights AI decision making, as an agent chooses a small negative reward in order to obtain the ultimate prize.
