GameStop is one-upping Sony with regards to its game console, by selling the PlayStation 4 with a higher capacity. Barely a month after Sony revealed it’s 1TB storage upgrade for the PlayStation 4, the retailer is instead offering the same console but with a 2TB hard drive, double the capacity of Sony’s own system.
Technically, GameStop manages to do this without needing an agreement from Sony. The “Supercharged” PlayStation 4 is a “refurbished” unit that has the larger hard drive, a relatively simple upgrade that can be performed by console owners themselves, removing the original 500GB drive and putting in the 2TB version.
While it does trump Sony’s upgraded console, GameStop’s effort does lose out on some aspects. The new 1TB model has other upgrades allowing it to have reduced power consumption, while GameStop’s version uses the more power-hungry older hardware.
The 2TB model is on sale now, priced at $480.
