For the third year running, HBO’s Game of Thrones is the most pirated television show of the year, according to TorrentFreak.
Episodes of the HBO fantasy fest were illegally downloaded over 8 million times this year, beating both Breaking Bad and The Walking Dead to earn Game of Thrones a seat on the Iron Throne of torrents. Game of Thrones has also been downloaded far more times this year than in previous years, having only been pirated 5.9m times in 2013 and 4.2m times in 2012.
Despite the figures quoted by TorrentFreak, it’s important to note that TorrentFreak states:
“online streaming and downloads for filehosting services are not included since there are no public sources to draw data from. Total piracy numbers will therefore be significantly higher.”
This means that it’s difficult to gauge exact figures in terms of nontorrent based pirating, though it’s a safe bet to assume that Game of Thrones would still be the most pirated show of 2014, considering that it was downloaded almost more than double the amount of times than its closest competitor – The Walking Dead.
