Samsung in a pre-CES move upgraded its most important budget smartphone. The Galaxy Ace Plus keeps the 320×480 resolution but bumps up from a 3.5-inch to a 3.65-inch screen. A faster 1GHz processor (up from 800MHz) and an extra 1GB of internal storage, for 3GB total, keep it fresh relative to others in its class.

The touchscreen phone still carries Android 2.3 with the most recent version of TouchWiz layered on top. A five-megapixel rear camera and 512MB of RAM are familiar from the original Ace. At 1,300mAh, the battery is relatively large for the size and class of phone.

Samsung brings the Galaxy Ace Plus first to Russia, which gets it this month. Europe, the CIS, South America, southern parts of Asia, the Middle East, Africa, and China will get it over time. The initial Galaxy Ace did make it to Canada through Telus and could see a repeat this year, although a US release isn’t probable without a change to the iPhone style home button.
