G2 Gets OTA Update for Mobile Hotspot, Wi-Fi calls

Users are reporting T-Mobile has begun rolling out an over-the-air update to the G2 which added mobile hot spot creation and Wi-Fi calling.   This has yet to be confirmed by T-Mobile. The upgrade brings Google’s official Android 2.2 hot spot option to share the 3G data over Wi-Fi with as many as five devices.

Wi-Fi calling is now the same feature that has arrived across T-Mobile’s lineup and gives the G2 a way to handle traditional calls using a local network. It doesn’t support automatic hand-offs to GSM and still uses cellphone minutes but may be ideal for those with poor reception indoors or frequent travelers.

The update also appears to enable updates to Google Goggles, but most other details aren’t known.
