john-singleton-diversityFX has given a series order to “Snowfall” from Academy Award-nominee John Singleton. Set against the dawn of the crack-cocaine epidemic in Los Angeles in 1983, the 10-episode first season is set to premiere in 2017.

Production on the series is scheduled to begin in October. Singleton (“Boyz n the Hood”) will executive produce with Dave Andron (“Justified,” “Knight Rider”), Thomas Schlamme (“The West Wing,” “The Americans”), Eric Amadio (“After Sex,” “Stuntmen”), Michael London (“Sideways,” “House of Sand and Fog”), and Trevor Engelson (“Remember Me,” “All About Steve”). Andron, who will serve as showrunner, wrote the pilot with Singleton and Amadio. The pilot, which FX ordered last fall, was directed by the Belgian directing team of Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah (“Black,” “Image,” “Broeders”).

“We are excited to add Snowfall to our original series lineup,” said Eric Schrier, co-president with Nick Grad of original programming for FX Networks and FX Productions. “Dave Andron, Tommy Schlamme, John Singleton and Eric Amadio have delivered a riveting and beautiful pilot and we can’t wait to start work on the series.”

Produced by FX Productions, “Snowfall” stars Damson Idris as Franklin Saint, young street entrepreneur on a quest for power; Sergio Peris-Mencheta, as Gustavo Zapata, a Mexican wrestler caught in a crime-family power struggle; Carter Hudson as CIA operative Teddy McDonald; and Emily Rios as Luica Villanueva, the daughter of a Mexican crime lord.
