baskets-fxFX has renewed “Baskets,” Zach Galifianakis’ comedy series, for a second season at FX, Variety has learned. Season 2 is set to premiere in early 2017. The renewal, announced by presidents of original programming for FX Networks and FX Productions, Eric Schrier and Nick Grad, comes halfway through the comedy’s first season, showing early promise in the freshman series.

The most-watched basic cable primetime comedy of the season, “Baskets” has averaged 1.5 million total viewers and 944,000 adults 18-49 through its first three episodes, according to Nielsen’s Live+7 numbers.

Co-created by Galifianakis, Louis C.K. and Jonathan Krisel, Galifianakis plays two roles in the series, starring as local rodeo clown Chip Baskets in Bakersfield, California, and also Chip’s twin brother, Dale Baskets.

“’Baskets’ is bold, brilliant and incredibly funny and we could not be happier with the reception it’s received in its breakout first season,” Schrier said. “’Baskets’ brings together three of the most innovative comedic minds working today — Zach, Louis and Jonathan — and we thank them, the rest of the creative team and the entire cast for everything they’ve done for the series.”
