The first season of DC’s Legends of Tomorrow came to a close last Thursday night on The CW and it concluded with some very specific words that comic fans were excited to hear.

In the closing minutes of the episode, the team is preparing to enter their time-traveling ship, The Waverider, when another Waverider appears in the sky above them and crashes to the ground. A lone survivor exits from the wreckage, making the claim that if they got on that ship they’d all die and that he was sent back by Heat Wave himself, Mick Rory. But who is this mystery man? He reveals himself as Rex Tyler (the superhero Hourman), a member of the Justice Society of America.

“With his final words in the finale, he planted a pretty deep flag about where we’re headed in season two, which is not just introducing Hourman but introducing his teammates in the Justice Society of America,” executive producer Marc Guggenheim tells The Hollywood Reporter. “For comic book fans, everyone knows the Justice Society is really the precursor to the Justice League, so it’s a pretty big move in our DC universe here on TV.”

A precursor to the Justice League of America, the Justice Society made its debut in the 1940s and in addition to Hourman its members included the likes of Doctor Fate, The Spectre, Hawkman, Sandman, The Atom, The Flash, and Green Lantern. It’s unclear which of these members will appear in the series or if characters from other versions of the team will be chosen for Legends.

Guggenheim went on to further talk about Legends of Tomorrow Season 2, revealing the Legends would pick up where the (now abolished) Time Masters left off.

“One of the other big things we’ve done in the season finale is we planted another flag in the form of Rip’s [Arthur Darvil] statement. Because the Time Masters are essentially gone and the Legends have destroyed the Oculus, that all means that someone else has to do the job of the Time Masters. Our Legends take that on as their new responsibility. It’s sort of like, you break it, you buy it.”

Finally, though he wouldn’t reveal who just yet is the primary antagonist, Guggenheim offered a tease for the Legends of Tomorrow Season 2 big bad, saying:

“The season two big bad is actually not going to be the [alien race of] Thanagarians. It’s going to be something else entirely. All I’ll really say about the nemesis in season two is Vandal Savage looks like a walk in the park compared to what the Legends will be facing. This will be a much, much bigger threat. I’m going to leave it at that because when we do reveal it, it’s going to be pretty big. People will be asking, ‘Vandal who?’ once they get the full picture of what our team is up against. It’s going to be way bigger than what you can even imagine, I can guarantee it.”

DC’s Legends of Tomorrow airs Thursdays on The CW.
