elizabeth-marvelWith the Democratic Party having just nominated one female former New York senator for president, “Homeland” is putting another on the White House doorstep.

Actress Elizabeth Marvel has been cast to play President-Elect Elizabeth Keane, a former New York senator set to ascend to the presidency. The character is bright, charming, lively and blunt — a natural politician. Marvel’s credits include “House of Cards,” “Fargo,” “True Grit” and “Burn After Reading.”

In January, Showtime CEO David Nevins revealed at the Television Critics Association’s winter press tour that the sixth season of “Homeland” would be set “in and around New York City.” In June, star Claire Danes revealed during a Q&A at New York’s Film Society of Lincoln Center details of the character that Marvel is set to play, saying she will not be a thinly veiled Hillary Clinton figure, but instead “a composite of all the different candidates.” Danes added that the character “challenges the norms (and) is a little scary for that reason,” and the “she gets along with Carrie Mathison pretty well.”

Earlier this month, the Showtimes drama received four Primetime Emmy Award — including for outstanding drama series, for outstanding lead actress in a drama series (Danes) and outstanding directing for a drama series (Leslie Linka Glater).

“Homeland” season six is set to premiere later this year.
