Cisco officials announced Monday that the company will purchase Virtuata, a company specializing in virtual-machine security. As eWeek reports, the move will expand Cisco’s data center and cloud portfolio, an area the company has been looking to focus on for some time.

Virtuata’s technology is aimed at securing virtual machine level information in data centers and cloud environments. The acquisition will likely aid Cisco in facilitating transitions to cloud infrastructure models for its enterprise clients. Cisco representatives have touted the move as essential to the company’s plans to provide unified data center operations with secure connectivity through virtual and cloud environments.

Data center virtualization and cloud computing make up part of the core vision Cisco has laid out in recent months. The company has been moving away from some less successful hardware operations in favor of offering enterprise-targeted networking services.
