Wanting to make something very different from the solo campaigns of Wargame European Escalation, Eugen Systems made great efforts to offer Wargame AirLand Battle an exciting campaign. In this campaign, you’ll handle your army and your battle groups on a huge strategic map representing Europe: ordering movements, asking for reinforcements, but also launching support strikes such as intelligence missions, special forces strikes, satellite spying, bombardment, tactical nuclear attacks, etc…

When a zone is under attack and you need to defend it, or when you send your own battle groups to assault, you are thrown into the heart of the spectacular battles happening in real-time. Your army is persistent all along the campaign: your units and battle groups will earn experience, making them perform better with every battle they survive…. but keep in mind losses are definitive as well!

The campaign is also playable in multiplayer against another player. It is scheduled to be released on May 30.

Cliffhanger Productions has announced that they will be launching Jagged Alliance Online. The game brings PvP-centric gameplay to the classic strategy series when it launches on Steam this spring. Featuring modern firepower, squad combat, and turn-based gameplay, Jagged Alliance Online for Steam will be the first in the series to focus on the competitive experience, with optional content for single-player.

Jagged Alliance Online will offer all PvP content, including 40+ mercenaries and 500+ items, free of charge. Cliffhanger Productions assures players that everything can be purchased through regular play, with cash purchases offered only as secondary alternatives. Optionally, a single-player content pack containing 100+ hours of gameplay will be available for purchase.

“Jagged Alliance is all about superior tactics (and big guns, of course), so that means providing every player with a chance of winning based on tactical choices, and not any outside factors such as paid items,” says Cliffhanger Productions Founder and Creative Director, Jan Wagner, and continues, “The PvP part is also what makes us stand out from all the Jagged Alliance games, I believe, since no matter how good an AI is, in the end, the true challenge is another player. I am glad we could finally do the game the way we wanted.”

Lead your outfit to become the greatest mercenary company in the world. Compete in turn-based, tactical PvP duels against other mercenary teams or take on challenging contracts around the globe with our Campaign Pack. Match your tactical skills against thousands of other players to win Warzones with your allies, and climb to the top of the leader boards to be the most feared mercenary company.

PvP Features:
- Build your company from 40+ mercenaries with unique attributes.
- 500+ weapons and items, and crafting to improve your weapons and armor.
- PvP leader boards, skill-based matchmaking, and tournaments.
- Compete in Warzone events for rare weapons and items.
- Form alliances with players and compete as a team.
- Transfer of PvP rewards into the single-player campaign.

Campaign Pack Features:
- 80+ PvE missions with over 100 hours of gameplay.
- 50+ unique enemies and bosses.
From June 12th, players will be able to create and play through the content from the base game, and the recent Storm Legion expansion pack without charge.

Rift’s free-to-play model marks a change of heart at Trion. Currently, Rift allows players to play Rift Lite for free; the first 20 levels of the game. Up until late last year, that was still the plan going forward: when we spoke to Scott Hartsman, the former executive producer of Rift, he felt the way forward was to retain the subscription while extending the Lite program. “What’s developed in the time since,” says Trion Creative Director Bill Fisher, “is a much wider acceptance of well designed free to play models.”

There will be no price for entry: players will not need to buy a box like rivals The Secret World and Guild Wars 2. The same goes for updates and expansions: “It is our goal to keep the content in Rift free – even as we move into large expansion territory,” says Bill. Free access, he says, “is the most requested feature since the game launched.” As Bill puts it, Trion want to create a free-to-play game that “truly provides value and entertainment when you choose to chip in, instead of simply adding a toll to remove pain. We want to be in the fun for good value business, not the ‘make the hurting stop’ business.”

The upcoming item store will stock experience and notoriety boosts tokens, currency and other convenience items. There will be a roster of vanity items for your characters and dimensions and mounts (and presumably pets). The item shop will also offer services that include gender, faction and race changes. Souls (Rift’s answer to talent trees) made available in the Storm Legion expansion will also be available for purchase. Gear will be available to buy, too.

There’s always a question in free-to-play games on whether it turns into a pay-to-win experience, and Trion acknowledge that buying gear may be controversial. “However, the best gear in the game must be earned,” explains Fisher, “and high level items on the store must also be available to be earned in the game if they have a high credit price.”

When the free-to-play switch is flicked, current players can continue their subscription, which will grant them a “patron” status. This comes with convenience and gain rate benefits, alongside a stipend of in-game currency. Although new players will have to pay for bigger bags, bank slots and additional role slots, those who previously subscribed will not lose anything from their characters. For them, Trion claims that Rift will play exactly the same as it did before: just without a subscription fee.

The switchover takes place on June 12th; in the meantime you can check out an info video about the Free to Play strategy below, and Rift’s patch 2.3: the Empyreal Assault will be on the servers soon, unlocking the new Dendrome zone.

Bundle Stars, the online game retailer, has today launched its first Stellar Bundle of awesome indie PC games for just $1, giving gamers the chance to pick up four Steam games at a bargain basement price. The first Stellar Bundle deal, titled Zombies Vs Aliens, features four gory arcade shooter games which have become indie cult favorites; Zombie Shooter, Zombie Shooter 2, Alien Shooter Revisited and Alien Hallway.

By purchasing the bundle of downloadable PC games from Bundle Stars, gamers can make a huge 96% saving* compared to buying the games individually. By buying any bundle from Bundle Stars, gamers are also supporting the games’ developers and contributing to the SpecialEffect charity which helps children and adults with severe disabilities to enjoy computer games.

For just $1 gamers receive Steam keys for:

Zombie Shooter sees players fighting to save humanity as crowds of zombies fill the research base and start to take over the world. Gamers must fight through contaminated hordes, choose from different weapons, upgrade their armoury as they earn more money and improve character skills to improve chance of survival. Plus, there are two additional game modes; Survive and Gun Stand, which players can use to determine how good they really are.

Zombie Shooter 2 is a unique blend of two game genres; Action and RPG. With three game modes to choose from – Campaign, Survive and Gun Stand, players can choose a character, develop skills through gameplay, earn money and choose from over 60 weapon types, medications and devices to fight against thousands of zombie enemies.

Alien Shooter Revisited sees players fighting the crowds of blood-thirsty monsters to stop them invading the secret research base. Players must earn points to have access to the full choice of weapons and inventory, including dynamite, implants and drones, to battle against the aliens.

Alien Hallway is a challenging action-strategy shooting game, fuelled with adrenaline. In a tough dynamic single-player game, gamers must control an entire army and destroy the enemies with super-powered weapons. From throwing grenades to using airstrike skill and upgrading both the base and the units, players must make serious rational decisions saving soldiers and earning gold bonuses which are vital in this intense confrontation.

Grant Hughes, Digital Director for Bundle Stars, commented today: “Destroying vast hordes of the undead has never been more satisfying, or affordable. Zombies Vs Aliens gets our new range of Stellar Bundle deals off to an electrifying start with four highly entertaining indie games from Sigma Team.”

He added: “Stellar Bundles are carefully curated to give gamers more bang for their buck. Now all our gamer friends can enjoy a bonus, ultra-low-price gaming fix in between our best-selling headline bundles.”

If you like your explorations in post-nuclear war Russia to be harder than hard nails, where there’s no HUD and enemies are that little bit more aggressive, then you’ll want spring for a pre-order of Metro: Last Light because it won’t be available in a standard copy of the game.

Koch Media, publisher of Metro: Last Light, say that “game content as a pre-order exclusive is a requirement by retail, and Ranger Mode seemed like the best choice since it was a mode for hardcore fans who would most likely pre-order the game”.

Koch Media’s global brand manager Huw Beynon revealed this nugget of news recently. Ranger mode was originally added to Metro 2033 after launch following requests from players for a more difficult game mode. Beynon explained that it’s not a game mode for everyone: “We do not recommend Ranger Mode for a first play through, and this is made very clear both in-game. We expect Metro fans will want to try Ranger Mode for a subsequent playthrough, and we think that for this hardcore player, Ranger Mode offers a richer experience – but only once you’ve clocked the game at least once.”

For buyers who don’t receive this bonus mode, it will be available as a DLC for $5. Beynon claims that “We rejected requests to make story content or additional missions exclusive. We also rejected requests to make this a timed exclusive. [...] We took all the steps we could to ensure that, while still offering retailers a pre-order incentive that met their needs, we did not force players to pre-order, or make them wait to get this content.”

Composer Giancarlo Feltrin has revealed the first musical tune he’s created for Shadow of the Eternals, the spiritual successor to Eternal Darkness: Sanity’s Requiem that’s currently seeking funding. The song is called “Bathory’s Theme,” after Erzébet Bathory, an infamous female serial killer who will be part of the game’s pilot episode.

Precursor Games’ CEO Paul Caporicci has posted his own update on the title’s development, focusing a portion of his note on the selection of Denis Dyack as creative lead. “Denis Dyack was my first choice for Creative, as he has a keen understanding on the creative aspects of game development,” says Caporicci. “It saddens me to read that people’s impressions of him are painted by anonymous accounts of other individuals.”

At Silicon Knights, Dyack oversaw the original cult-hit Eternal Darkness, before launching less successful games like Too Human and X-Men: Destiny. Ultimately, legal issues with Epic would seal the fate for Dyack’s development house.

Fans have asked about Nintendo’s involvement, and Caporicci says that Nintendo has “been very supportive of our endeavour” so far. The game is being built in CryENGINE for the PC, but shouldn’t have “substantial differences” when ported to the Wii U.

Bethesda has announced Wolfenstein: The New Order, coming to the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, PC and next-generation consoles during Q4 2013.

The New Order is set in 1960 after the Nazis won World War II. Gamers play as the familiar American war hero B.J. Blazkowicz and are tasked with launching an “impossible counter-offensive” against the Nazi powers that have taken over the world.

Set in Europe, The New Order will have players infiltrating Nazi strongholds and battling legions of enemies, while taking control of “super weapons” that the Nazis have used to dominate earth–”and beyond,” Bethesda teased.

“We are excited to bring a new chapter of Wolfenstein to gamers everywhere,” said Jens Matthies, creative director at MachineGames. “As fans of the series, working on this game is an honor, and our team is driven to create an unforgettable action-adventure experience that will make FPS fans proud.”

“The New Order” is in development at MachineGames, a wholly owned subsidiary of Bethesda parent company Zenimax.

Special Forces: Team X, the third-person shooter from Blacklight: Retribution developer Zombie Studios, is taking its price down to $5 on Steam from May 6 at 10 a.m. PT, through May 13. After the sale, Special Forces: Team X will get a permanent price drop to $10, forever and ever, or until Zombie Studios, publishers Atari and/or Microprose decide to change that number again. Before 10 a.m. PT today, Special Forces: Team X costs $15.

Special Forces: Team X is a cel-shaded, cover-based shooter with more than 100 possible map combinations and five multiplayer modes. When it first hit Steam in February, the game had a bug that could randomly reset character XP, but that issue has been resolved via a series of patches, Microprose says in a press release. A Title Update for the XBLA version is in testing now.

“We are hoping that this price drop will bring players into the game that may have been scared away by the initial launch problems,” the press release reads.

Star Citizen has reached over $9 million in funding, thanks to its almost 170,000 contributors. The space exploration MMO, spearheaded by Wing Commander creator Chris Roberts, began with a successful $2 million run on Kickstarter, and has since raised almost $7 million on its own website. The original goal was “just” $500,000, but Star Citizen has topped every stretch goal it set and then some.

As part of its stretch goals, Star Citizen‘s launch plans include a tablet companion app, celebrity voice acting, a free mission pack for every player, and over 100 star systems to explore while playing.
Battle Worlds: Kronos recently concluded its Kickstarter funding round with 7,564 backers pledging $260,235. Under development by KING Art, Kronos surpassed its goal of $120,000 early on in the drive with 22 days to spare. Battle Worlds: Kronos is intended as a streamlined tactics game á la Advanced Wars.

“45 days ago we were not sure if we could collect $120,000. We’re a small studio, we hadn’t had a well-known IP and we’re German – so we got a fair amount of ‘angst,’” KING Art studio head Jan Theysen told us. “We see ourselves on the way to become a ‘Kickstarter company.’ Making games together with a community of gamers and funded by that community… what could be better?”

KING Art previously found success (mostly in Europe) with the point and click adventure game The Book of Unwritten Tales. Battle Worlds: Kronos is scheduled to enter closed beta in the third quarter for backers and go full open beta shortly after. The game is planned to launch in the fourth quarter of 2013.

Batman mainstay Kevin Conroy is reportedly not voicing the caped crusader in Arkham Origins. According to South African magazine NAG, Warner Bros. Montreal passed on Conroy, who played Batman in Arkham Asylum and Arkham City, as well as most of the hero’s animated adventures across the last 20 years. NAG says the developer wanted another actor to portray Origins‘ younger version of the dark knight.

The report adds up with WBG Montreal’s approach to the upcoming prequel. In a Game Informer interview, DC Comics Chief Creative Officer Geoff Johns explained Origins is about “Batman’s initiation into that insane world” of the other Arkham games.

“It’s called Arkham Origins and it really is the introduction of what Arkham means,” Johns told Game Informer. “Arkham evokes a sense of insanity and chaos embodied in the twisted minds and colorful villains of the Batman universe. That had to start somewhere.”

As revealed earlier this month, Batman: Arkham Origins swings onto retail shelves this year; the bat-time is October 25, and the bat-channels are PS3, Xbox 360, Wii U, and PC. Companion game Batman: Arkham Origins Blackgate drops onto the Vita and 3DS on the same day.

Eliza is the first of two mystery characters coming to Skullgirls, alongside Squigly and Big Band. Those last two will each receive a story mode and an all-new stage.
Paypal froze Lab Zero Games’ account briefly today, due to risk that a significant number of Skullgirls crowdfunding pledges would be revoked. Lab Zero allowed backers to vote on new DLC characters, leading to the theory that if their chosen character didn’t make it into the game, some fans would pull their “vote.” “Basically, they are terrified of chargebacks,” CEO Peter Bartholow told Venturebeat. “If we spend all the money and don’t deliver and everyone [requests] chargebacks, PayPal is concerned they will be on the line for [the money]. So, they are effectively treating it as a loan.”

After discussions with PayPal, the company has “unrestricted” Lab Zero’s account, but continues to hold around $35,000, which Lab Zero CEO Peter Bartholow had planned to use for payroll. “They’ve only got $35k of our money frozen, so we’re not in any real danger,” Bartholow said on NeoGAF. “It’s just an inconvenience at the moment.”

In the videos, you can find out more details about the game’s story and its place in the larger Star Trek universe.

In the game, you play as Kirk and Spock whose battles will take you into familiar locations, like the bridge, transporter room and the engine room – but also deep into many areas of the ship that have never been seen on film before, including the Enterprise’s turbolift shafts, observation lounge, engineering decks and officer’s quarters. This epic action adventure features an original storyline and provides immersive co-op gameplay.

The producers and development team of Star Trek: The Video Game worked closely with the entire creative team responsible for the re-imagined 2009 blockbuster Star Trek film to ensure what players see will look and feel remarkably authentic.

Star Trek: The Video Game will be released on April 23, 2013 for the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 and PC.

Rather than waiting to localize Tomb Raider into Japanese, Square Enix will sell a Japanese voiceover pack for the Steam version already available in Japan through the Western stores. That part is cool and kind of forward-thinking.

The part that’s less cool: the pack costs $30, on top of the full-price purchase of the game. The massive upcharge brings the US Steam version into price parity with the Japanese retail release, which shares an April 25 release date with the VO pack, and retails for ¥7,980 ($80). Yes, video games are always too expensive in Japan. And Square Enix is artificially ensuring that’s the case for Tomb Raider.

It’s hard to figure out who this Japanese Language Pack is for, if it comes out the same day as the localized PC release for the same effective price.

Now it’s innovating by adopting a new model, free-to-play, and bringing it to a new level of silly nomenclature by calling it “free-2-drift.”

Ridge Racer Driftopia, developed by Ridge Racer Unbounded’s Bugbear Entertainment, is a racing game in which you can buy cars, “repair kits,” and XP packs. Namco previously experimented with a similar business model with Ridge Racer for Vita, which shipped with a small number of cars and courses, and sold the rest as DLC.
