Speaking with Redmond Game Studios and Platforms GM Matt Booty, Ars Technica reports that cloud computing will boost performance in games designed for Microsoft’s Xbox One.

While latency-sensitive actions will be handled by a user’s Xbox One console, Microsoft claims its cloud architecture can pre-calculate elements like lighting and physics modeling, leading to increased in-game performance.

This additional processing is made possible by the 300,000 servers that will power Xbox Live after the Xbox One’s launch, up from the 15,000 servers currently supporting the service. Booty notes that “[for] every Xbox One available in your living room we’ll have three of those devices in the cloud available.”

Xbox One games that support the feature will remain operational in the event of an Internet connection outage, though developers will need to address the possibility of reduced performance. “In the event of a drop out [...] the game is going to have to intelligently handle that,” Booty tells Ars Technica.

I guess the kids in the UK are doing much better than us here in the US, because the headline does say one hundred and twenty-five thousand British Pounds ($188,700).

But let us here at ToT put things in perspective. The GRID 2 BAC Mono Edition isn’t so much a special edition of a game as it is a luxury sports car that happens to come with a game. Know you know that I am sure you going to be ready to pull out your VISA card now.

Specifically, the BAC Mono Edition comes with the Mono, essentially a street legal formula racing car. Also included is a racing suit and helmet, a copy of GRID 2 and a PlayStation 3 on which to play it. According to BAC’s website, a Mono with no frills has a base price of £96,495 ($145,919), and that’s before throwing in VAT. Only one copy of the BAC Mono Edition is being manufactured, making it something a collector’s item. You can place your pre-order exclusively with GAME. Oh, and shipping is free.

Now Best Buy is selling a special edition of GRID 2 in North America. It includes the IndyCar DLC pack and retails for $59.99. Much more in the range of my pocket book.

GRID 2 comes out next week.

The biggest eyebrow-raiser with last week’s Gran Turismo 6 reveal was that it’s launching on the PS3, and not the PS4. Doesn’t Sony want to drive PS4 launch sales with one of its biggest franchises?

In an interview on the PlayStation Blog, Sony Computer Entertainment Europe CEO Jim Ryan explained why the latest Gran Turismo isn’t debuting on the soon-to-be latest PlayStation, arguing that GT6 can still deliver a significant difference from GT5, despite being on the same platform.

“You had GT1 and GT2 on PS one,” Ryan said, “GT3 and GT4 on PS2, then there’s GT5 on PS3 and a space next to it. The difference between Gran Turismo and GT2 is unbelievable, but they’re both on the same platform. The difference between GT3 and GT4 is huge. We’re absolutely confident when GT6 comes, you’ll see a big step change up from GT5 too. There’s still a lot of potential on PS3 that a developer like Polyphony can really exploit.”

The other, obvious factor is the install base. Gran Turismo has traditionally been a big seller, with three entries shifting over 10 million units. To do that, Ryan indicates, you need to have the install base.

“And the other factor is that on PS3 we have an install base of 70 million units,” Ryan added. “On PS4 on launch day we’ll have an install base of zero units. There’ll be plenty of games to help drive PS4 – not least Driveclub in the racing genre from Evolution Studios, a studio with a fantastic pedigree.”

A PS4 version of GT6 looks more than likely at some point down the line, and it’s something that hasn’t been shied away from. Speaking to the UK IGN team, series creator Kazunori Yamauchi said, “We actually do have a PlayStation 4 version in mind, but for this holiday season, we thought it would be best for users to release on PS3 for now.”

Need for Speed Rivals is another title that won’t be coming to the already down and out Wii U. The latest game in the Need for Speed franchise has been slated for release on PC, PS3 and Xbox 360 in November, with the PS4 and Xbox One release expected later this year.

Ghost Game’s producer Marcus Nilsson has confirmed with Eurogamer that Need for Speed Rivals will not be developed for the Wii U.

Nilsson says that “[the Frostbite engine] is not really set up for Wii U. I don’t have all the information, so it wouldn’t be right for me to speak about it. Frostbite 3 is a really capable engine, it’s scalable and it gives us a big advantage on the next generation to support the Xbox One and the PS4, but it’s not being developed on the Wii U.”

News of Frostbite 3 not running on Wii U is not new. Earlier this month DICE technical director Johan Andersson stated that “Frostbite 3 has never been running on Wii U.”Last week EA spokesperson Jeff Brown announced that EA has no current games in development for Wii U U, however the company’s CFO Blake Jorgensen later stated that it actually does, but not anywhere near as many as it does for PS and Xbox.

Need for Speed Rivals joins FIFA 14 and Madden NFL 25 on the list of EA titles that will skip Nintendo’s console.

A new PS4 ad in Europe provides further indication the continent can expect the console to arrive there this year. While Sony announced the PS4 was due “Holiday 2013″ back at February’s reveal event, the company declined to commit to which regions that window applied to. However, a new PS4 ad, first seen in today’s Metro newspaper in the UK, then later tweeted by PlayStation Europe, says the PS4 is “Coming 2013.”

Europeans have good reason to be cautious about a tentative window. The PS3 reached the continent in March 2007, having arrived in North America and Japan some four months prior

EA today announced Need for Speed Rivals, an action/racing game created by an inspired new development team, using a powerful engine and delivering next-generation gameplay. Need for Speed Rivals is being developed by EA’s newest studio Ghost Games, who bring new thinking and innovation to the “Need for Speed” franchise in partnership with the expert racing team at Criterion Games. Built on the Frostbite 3 game engine, Need for Speed Rivals captures the adrenaline and intensity of the street’s ultimate rivalry between cops and racers, in a stunning open road environment. Need for Speed Rivals is coming to the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 and PC on November 19 and will also be released for the Xbox One and PlayStation 4 later this year.

In Need for Speed Rivals, gamers play as either a cop or racer, where each side of the law has its own set of high stakes challenges, rewards and consequences. As a racer, the goal is to become infamous for taking risks behind the wheel and capturing your most intense escapes on video for the world to see. The more cops players evade, the more Speed Points they collect, enabling them to unlock new cars and items. Keep raising the stakes race after race to become an ever-more valuable target to the cops – but risk losing it all if busted. As a cop, players work together as part of a team in pursuit of racers, earning prominence and rising in the ranks of the Police Force with every bust. Achieving higher ranks unlocks new police only cars and more powerful pursuit tech.

Ghost Games also announced today the long-awaited return of Ferrari to the “Need for Speed” franchise. For the first time in seven years, gamers can get behind the wheel of some of the most luxurious, desirable automobiles on the planet, including the F12berlinetta. Spokesperson Stefano Saporetti, Head of Brand Operations in Ferrari added, “We are back in the ‘Need For Speed’ franchise, starting with ‘Need for Speed Rivals,’ as we want the fans of this world famous and award winning racing game saga to be able again to feel the excitement of the Ferrari Brand and cars.”

At the heart of Need for Speed Rivals is AllDrive, an innovative new online feature that allows gamers to seamlessly transition from playing alone, to playing with friends, eliminating the line between single player and multiplayer. Players will have to keep one eye on their rearview mirror as friends will be able to enter and exit races on-the-fly, creating a world where no two events will ever be the same.

“The ‘Need for Speed’ franchise has been an industry leader bringing social competition to the forefront in games,” said Marcus Nilsson, Executive Producer, Ghost Games. “For the first time, players will have the freedom to seamlessly go from single player to co-op to multiplayer. In ‘Need for Speed Rivals’ we are creating one game experience with one progression, where the freedom to play with friends is more fluid and accessible than ever before.”

Need for Speed Rivals pushes the limits of racing games with all-new and improved features:

Next-Gen Racing – Redview County is brought to life with stunning, next-generation detail and weather effects that force drivers to master the elements, as well as the competition.

Need for Speed Network Powered by Autolog – Gamers can compare stats and challenge their friends anytime, anywhere and then easily share their accomplishments with both friends and rivals.

Personalization – Drivers customize their ride with fresh paintjobs, custom license plates, liveries, decals, rims, and performance upgrades.

Pursuit and Evasion Tech – Street racing explodes with 11 upgradeable gadgets including turbo boosts, jammers and EMPs for racers, and shockwaves, roadblocks and helicopters for cops.

Players eager to bust racers from day one can pre-order Need for Speed Rivals at participating retailers and receive the “Need for Speed Rivals Ultimate Cop Pack” at no additional cost. This pack offers exclusive access to a powerful collection of items including the Nissan GT-R Black Edition cop car, advanced pursuit technology, and a custom livery.

At first glance Shelter looks kind of cuddly; you play a badger mother looking after her cubs in some pleasant looking greenery. Pid developer Might & Delight is billing its next game as anything but. As this early footage shows, you’ll have to hunt other animals for food, and avoid becoming prey yourself. That inferno at the end isn’t too cuddly either.

Shelter, announced earlier this year, is still foraging on Steam Greenlight. Might & Delight’s plans are to release it into the wilds of PC and Mac towards the end of this summer.

EA revealed some pretty significant news last week, with a spokesperson saying the company currently has no Wii U games in development. Now, it appears that EA may have some Wii U games in development after all, according to EA CFO Blake Jorgensen. The news comes by way of comments made by Jorgensen at the Stifel Nicolaus 2013 Internet, Media and Communications Conference.

“I’ll let the consumers ultimately vote on PS versus Xbox,” said Jorgensen, weighing in on the major console players. “I think Nintendo’s business was more [an] extension of their last console. We are building titles for the Nintendo consoles but not anywhere near as many as we are for PS or Xbox.” Jorgensen’s comments would seem to indicate that EA is, in fact, still developing Wii U titles, though it’s possible he’s referring to the slate of already available games.

If there are Wii U games in development at EA, it’s hard to say what they might be. The publisher has definitively stated that many of its biggest 2013 games are not planned for Wii U, including Battlefield 4, Madden 25 and, most recently, FIFA 14. SCE America announced a release date of June 18 this morning. The Vita port of the co-op game is also confirmed for Europe, although that remains undated for now.

SCE America says the Vita version, being handled by Blitz Game Studios, features ad hoc network support. Lots of the additions center on the touchscreen, including being able to control paint, thinner, and the electric beam of Oswald (the one that’s not Mickey). The touchscreen can also be used to command AI and navigate the user interface, among a number of other actions.

The game sold 529,000 units in the US across November and December 2012, having launched for PS3, Xbox 360, Wii U, and Wii on November 18.

As an RPG that allows you to choose a career, set off on a quest and also mess around a lot, the goal with the expansion is clearly to tap into social aspects of the experience. The expansion will allow four players — who are on each other’s friend lists — to play together in the main game, while a Link mode will mean friends can also exchange messages and track each other’s progress. The Link idea will also be followed up with a related website, while extra content will arrive in the form of a new island, with additional items and monsters included.

The new content will be available in two ways. A newly branded version of the game, with the full title and additional content, will arrive for 4,980 Yen, while those that have already taken the plunge can download the updated features onto their copy for 2,000 Yen; both arrive on 25th July in Japan.

Rhode Island is going to try to recover some the $100-million-plus loan debt from 38 Studios by selling the Amalur intellectual property shortly. The Providence Journal reports there is interest in the asset, but the lawyer in charge of the sale hasn’t revealed a value.

Meanwhile, a hearing in the state’s lawsuit against the architects of the 38 Studios loan is scheduled for this Wednesday, after studio founder and former Boston Red Sox pitcher Curt Schilling was unable to get the suit dismissed in March.

The sale of the studio’s physical assets net the state approximately $830,000. Following the sale of the IP, Rhode Island tax payers will have to pay off the rest of the debt.

Quick selection of weapons via the gamepad as possible, as well as a view of the entire map of a given location. The trailer also touts “gamepad mirroring”, though I’m not sure what benefit that has.

When the game originally launched on the PC and other consoles, it included a pre-order mission that allowed you to snipe Hitler. Currently there’s no word if this mission will be included for Wii U owners at launch.

The trailer also revealed it’s coming to Japan sometime next year.

The new trailer is an embellishment of the first one, providing more context. Panopticon seems to be the region Freedom Wars takes place in, a totalitarian dystopia in the future. The world is devastated by dwindling resources and zero population growth – maybe because hundreds of millions are dying in war.

Freedom Wars supports 8-player co-op and competitive modes, supports both Adhoc and Wi-Fi, and use the Vita’s GPS and Near tech.
