J. C. Penney and The Salvation Army have launched a new season of the Angel Giving Tree Online to provide Christmas gifts to disadvantaged kids and senior citizens across the country. As the exclusive online destination for adopting Salvation Army Angels, jcp.com now boasts a new, customizable feature that makes it easier than ever to be a great Santa this holiday by enabling groups to adopt multiple Angels at one time.

“In our third year of presenting the Angel Giving Tree Online, we wanted to offer the ability for individuals, families and groups to make adopting a Salvation Army Angel an annual holiday tradition,” said Jodi Gibson, divisional vice president of community relations for jcpenney. “By incorporating new enhancements to the adoption experience, supporters now have the means to come together and significantly impact more families in need this season.”

Free Shipping for Gifts

Created in collaboration with Infosys, Akamai Technologies, SapientNitro and Usablenet, the Angel Giving Tree Online enables supporters to adopt an Angel anywhere in the U.S. – making it easier than ever to buy and ship clothing, toys or other wish list items from the convenience of their home, office or almost anywhere in the world. For added convenience, the Angel Giving Tree Online program will also be accessible via a mobile browser at m.jcp.com/angel as well as a new app available for iPads starting Nov. 14. In conjunction with UPS, Angel gifts purchased through jcp.com can be shipped free of charge to a Salvation Army collection center.

“The Salvation Army is preparing for what is expected to be another record number of families seeking help this Christmas,” said Maj. George Hood, national community relations and development secretary for The Salvation Army. “With the need greater than ever, we appreciate jcpenney’s strong commitment to continually enhancing the online program so that the millions of children and seniors living in poverty will have the opportunity to receive a gift this year.”

In order to ensure that Angels receive their gifts in time for Christmas, all adoptions and merchandise purchases must be made before Dec. 9; otherwise supporters have until Dec. 13 to buy a jcpenney gift card for their Angel.

Due on October 31, it will connect to the company’s residential gateway and send broadcasts over Wi-Fi from the receiver to the TV. This lets customers put TV sets in rooms or other places, such as patios or backyards, where there are no TV outlets.

The Cisco-made receiver uses an existing Internet connection and Wi-Fi network, though both are included in U-verse Internet packages for those who don’t pick them independently.

The wireless receiver will require a $49 initial fee and be subject to a $7 per month subscription after that. There is no technician installation or appointment needed to bring the wireless receiver to a home, however.

In the film, opening in North America on February 17, Arrietty (Bridgit Mendler), a tiny, but tenacious 14-year-old, lives with her parents (Will Arnett and Amy Poehler) in the recesses of a suburban garden home, unbeknownst to the homeowner and her housekeeper (Carol Burnett). Like all little people, Arrietty (AIR-ee-ett-ee) remains hidden from view, except during occasional covert ventures beyond the floorboards to “borrow” scrap supplies like sugar cubes from her human hosts. But when 12-year-old Shawn (David Henrie), a human boy who comes to stay in the home, discovers his mysterious housemate one evening, a secret friendship blossoms. If discovered, their relationship could drive Arrietty’s family from the home and straight into danger.

In reality, however, users weren’t able to place video calls over 3G and the feature was only relegated to Wi-Fi networks. Now, it seems T-Mobile has resolved the issue that was keeping it from letting users access 3G networks for the connection.

T-Mobile is now believed to have beenblocking the P2P mode required by Google Talk’s video chat service that’s required for two users to connect. Verizon subscribers were able to use the chat feature over 3G without an issue. There was a need to enable this while blocking other P2P connections that use the same mode. With this hurdle crossed, it’s expected other handsets running on Android 2.3.4 will also have the ability to use Google Talk.

NEC has introduced what it calls the “next generation” of desktop monitors, starting with the MultiSync EX231Wp-BK, a 23-inch LED backlit monitor capable of full HD (1920×1080) resolution using a PVA panel with high viewing angles (178 degrees both horizontally and vertically), a 3000:1 contrast ratio and featuring human and ambient light sensors to adjust the monitor’s brightness to save power along with other energy-efficiency features.

The company credits the LED backing with allowing the large monitor to use less power, radiate less heat, and use less packaging for the lighter-weight design. The monitor also utilizes recycled plastics in its design, uses no hazardous materials, and features touch-sensitive OSD controls directly in the ultra-thin bezel for users to manually adjust settings. The human and ambient-light sensors not only detect local lighting and compensate accordingly, they also detect the absence of the operator and dim to save power when the user isn’t there.

The monitor has full connectivity including both DisplayPort and DVI-I output as well as VGA and DVI-I inputs, making it useful as part of a multi-monitor setup — the monitor can display all three inputs on its own screen at the touch of a button. The unit also features a USB pass-through port. It includes a fully-adjustable quick-release stand, along with height, pivot, tilt and swivel adjustments.

The NEC MultiSync EX231Wp-BK ships with a USB and DVI cable, along with a 15-pin D-sub to DVI-A adapter. It carries a three-year warranty, and is expected to retail for $319.

“It appears there was a misstatement,” a Microsoft spokesperson said in a statement the company issued Monday afternoon. “We are eagerly awaiting the next generation of Windows 7 hardware that will be available in the coming fiscal year. To date, we have yet to formally announce any timing or naming for the next version of Windows.”

According to a transcript of his Monday speech made available by Microsoft, Ballmer said Monday that, “as we look forward to the next generation of Windows systems, which will come out next year, there’s a whole lot more coming. As we progress through the year, you ought to expect to hear a lot about Windows 8. Windows 8 slates, tablets, PCs, a variety of different form factors.”

Review units given out at the event had the option to load apps from “unknown sources” beyond Android Market that had previously been purposefully removed on all AT&T Android hardware. It wasn’t evident whether this was specific to the Infuse 4G or a broad policy, but as one of AT&T’s flagship phones would be more likely to represent the carrier’s overall attitude.

The policy was instituted as soon as Android phones began selling through AT&T under the guise of security, though this justification was thrown into doubt from the outset. Blocking non-Market apps may have helped prevent malware but also conveniently prevented VoIP or unofficial tethering apps that would let users reduce their dependency on AT&T’s own plans. It may be less concerned now that it can monitor tethering and hotspot use to make these customers pay more regardless.

The earlier policy drew flak from fans and was often cited in arguments that Google was practicing a double standard, claiming openness versus the iPhone but letting carriers lock up Android devices as much or more than Apple did for its own models. Google VP Andy Rubin has claimed that dictating terms to carriers would contradict openness values but hasn’t had an answer to how end users would get the same level of control.

Telus on Wednesday became the next major Canadian carrier to detail its plans for LTE-based 4G. The provider planned to start deploying the network in the second half of this year with an expectation that it would go live in early 2012. The timing would put it just behind Rogers, which hopes to have active service by the end of 2011.

The network will initially have to use the 1,700MHz and 2,100MHz bands, Telus claimed. It considered this a “first stage” and didn’t expect significant rural coverage unless it could win enough of an upcoming Industry Canada auction for 700MHz wireless spectrum. The lower frequency has much further range and better penetrates the indoors, making it better to reach a wide area as well as improve coverage even in urban areas.

Telus used the LTE plans to try and pitch the government, saying it hoped the auction would have an “equitable opportunity” for it to get 700MHz airspace. Its view echoed that of other incumbents Bell and Rogers and mostly reflected a resistance to auction rules that would require giving newcomers like Wind Mobile and Mobilicity a fair chance. The smaller carriers have warned they would almost certainly be locked out of viable 4G since the top three can easily outbid them at auction.

Samsung’s mobile and TV hardware groups showed off a project they did together at an event in Budapest on Monday. Both the Galaxy S II and the Galaxy Tab 10.1 should have the option of connecting to one of Samsung’s new D7000 or D8000 TVs and streaming their own, separate TV feed over the local network. Both TVs have a second HD tuner and could turn the smartphones and tablets into full-fledged second TVs as long as they’re on the same local network.

Some of the details haven’t been outlined, such as whether the stream will be HD or if there will be any restrictions on the shows that will be viewable on one of Samsung’s Android devices. Devices that don’t have a cellular connection but could still be used to watch, such as the Galaxy S Wi-Fi 5.0, also aren’t certain to get the option.

Timing for the streaming feature hasn’t been disclosed. Also regional expansion also isn’t certain, but most features appear worldwide.
