The upgrade, previously claimed by the manufacturer to have exceeded expectations after internal testing, will let the camera film at 6K resolution at up to 100fps, and provides three additional stops over the Epic M-X.

The updated sensor will also allow for 5K video at up to 120fps and over 15 stops of dynamic range, and is said to provide a cleaner image at ISO 2000 than the M-X sensor at ISO 800.

The company will be allowing early adopters to pre-order the upgrade now for $8,500, with the price rising to $9,500 on Thursday, writes Engadget. Owners of the Scarlet camera will be given the option of upgrading to the Epic M-X or directly to the 6K Dragon sensor in the future, though the price has yet to be disclosed. New pre-orders of the Epic-M Dragon will begin tomorrow for $29,000, and will ship after existing Epic-M owners have had the chance to upgrade.

Red will be processing a number of Dragon sensor upgrades at its booth at the NAB show in Las Vegas.

Sony is fighting against high-end camera manufacturer REds patent infringement lawsuit with one of its own. The new filing, claiming that Red has infringed seven of Sony’s patents, has been filed in a Central District court in California, and seeks a number of sales injunctions as well as financial compensation.

A notice on Sony’s professional video camera site, found by The Verge, states that Sony believes the RED One, Epic, and Scarlet Cameras, “various digital still and motion camera modules, and various accessories such as the Redmote” infringes their patents, but does not mention which patents are being infringed. Red’s own lawsuit, filed in February, claims Sony infringes on two Red patents with three cameras, with Red seeking not only a sales injunction and compensation, but also the destruction of the F65, F5, and F55 cameras.

Shortly after the Sony comment, Red CEO Jim Jannard wrote on the Red forums “Seems like someone is nervous… it just ain’t me,” later revealing that Red pays “many companies royalties to use patented technology.”

RePlay has just detailed the latest addition to its action camera range with the XD720. The company is calling it the lightest (2 oz) and smallest (about the size of lip balm) HD action camera on the market, comparing it to the dimensions of lip balm, saying it can even attach to sunglasses. As the name suggests, it can record 720p resolution video at either 30 or 60fps.

Its launch also means the RePlay XD480 will be discontinued. The successor is made of aluminum and is water-resistant. The recording time is set at up to two hours, with a microSD memory card slot that can support capacities of up to 32GB.

The sensor is a five-megapixel unit and the 120-degree field of view doesn’t distort the images recorded by the camera, like in competitors. The built-in mic is complemented by an external audio line-in for adding remote microphones as well.

Pricing is set at $200, with a ballistic carrying case, 4GB microSD memory card, card reader, adapter, car charger, safety leash, and two mounts included.

Samsung is adding to its extensive range of camcorders with the HMX-F90. The simple-to-use and lightweight digital video camera has a 5-Megapixel CMOS sensor capable of 720p HD video capture, as well as a One Touch share button for faster uploads to social networks and video hosting sites.

Capable of recording MP4 video with AAC audio at 1280×720 resolution at 30 frames per second under NTSC, it can also record at what is claimed to be a Standard Definition resolution, in both 4:3 and 16:9 aspect ratios. Still images can be caught as JPEGs, 1600×1200 in size. The 52x optical zoom using the f/2.1 lens extends to a 70x digital “Intelli-zoom,” while Hyper DIS image stabilization helps reduce handheld camera shake. Built-in functions include time-lapse recording, mid-recording pause, and a refreshed Smart Background Music option.

While a price and street date for the UK and Europe has not been revealed as of yet, the HMX-F90 is likely to be out in time for Christmas. A US release has not been confirmed, but the appearance of NTSC as well as PAL video recording suggests it could still cross the Atlantic.

An image for an event on October 30th appeared on the company’s Facebook account and shows camera equipment marked with CineAlta, Sony’s high-end cinematography brand, along with a hashtag for something called “The New F.”

The message on the social network mentions that the new release will be 4K-capable with a 50Mbps data rate and a 4:2:2 color space. It has been suggested by Sony Alpha Rumors that the new offering will replace the now-discontinued F3 PL mount camera, though it could end up being closer to the CineAlta F65 that shipped in January with a $65,000 pricetag.

Broadcasters and production companies are slowly gearing up to create content for the new 4K televisions. The sets have started to go on sale, and currently have little in the way of programming that uses the high-resolution format, the increase of which may drive sales.

The QF20, which we tried at CES, can sense if it has been flipped over and changes both filming and menu orientations automatically, and the W300 is claimed to be water-, shock-, and dust-proof.

Aside from being ambidextrous, the QF20 is a 1080p HD video camera with a 2.7-inch touch screen. Wi-Fi connectivity allows the device to post video to Facebook, YouTube and Picasa. A smart BGM function adds background music and basic editing to clips without exporting to a computer, and Art Time Lapse lets it be used for passage-of-time shots.

The W300, billed as a rugged pocket camcorder, shooting 1080p video and previewing on its 2.3-inch screen. The main selling point is its toughness, claiming to be waterproof at up to 15 feet for 30 minutes, dustproof and capable of taking drops of up to six feet onto solid ground.

Both camcorders are on sale now, with the QF20 retailing for $350, and the W300 pocket camcorder for around $160.

Sony has taken the wraps off its rumored NEX FS700 pro video camera. As had been suggested, the video camera is capable of shooting at 4K resolution, but this will only be supported through a future upgrade. Initially it will be limited to shooting at 1080p, but it will be able to record 4K video, when its firmware is upgraded in time, over 3G-SDI to an optional external 4K recorder.

Its other notable talent is its super-slow motion capability. It can shoot up to an incredible 960fps, but only if recording quality is wound back. However, it can still shoot 120fps in 1080p over a 16-second burst, or 240fps in a shorter 8-second burst. As a member of Sony’s NEX family product line, it will also do this using existing and future E-mount lenses. An adapter will allow users to shoot with just about any SLR or DSLR 35mm lens.

It captures its images using a Super 35mm sensor with a new 4K ‘Exmor’ Super 35 CMOS sensor with 11.6 million pixels. It is also 60/50Hz switchable allowing film makers to shoot in any region without concern for PAL or NTSC recording formats. Compatible storage media includes SD and Memory Sticks, as well as Sony’s new HXR-FMU128 flash memory.

The NEX-FS700U (body only) and the NEX-FS700UK (with 18-200mm zoom lens) will be available in June for ‘under $10,000′.

A flip-out USB arm will let users transfer images and charge the camera’s built-in battery, while an HDMI input let users throw images up onto HDTVs.

At the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas last month, Panasonic showed off its new lineup of camcorders for 2012. With the arrival of the new models imminent, the company has announced pricing for its range of consumer and prosumer HD camcorders, ranging from $1,200 down to $250. The top of the line is represented by the 3MOS sensor-using HC-X900M, while other models offer full HD, 3D and even a waterproof design.

The flagship camcorder is the HC-X900M that shoots 1080p at 60p and sells for $1,200. It features a completely re-engineered lens, sensor and engine to add features such as manual focusing, 5.1-channel surround sound and AVCHD 3D with an options conversion 3D lens (sold separately for $400).

Six of the camcorders offer 1MOS sensors and full HD (1920×1080) recording with compact bodies and lower pricing. Like the HC-X900M, the six models offer five-way optical image stabilization, ultra-telephoto zoom and wide-angle lenses and intelligent digital zoom when required. The HC-V700 ($550) and HC-V700M ($600) feature a high-sensitivity sensor that enhances low-light conditions and sport a 460K dot LCD with touch control. The two models can also use the VW-CLT2 3D conversion lens like the more expensive HC-X900M. The have built-in 28mm wide-angle lenses and feature 21x optical zoom (up to 46x digital zoom).

The HC-V500 ($450) and HC-V500M ($500) feature an “intelligent index system” that automatically notes faces, scene changes, zooming and panning and can intelligently play back selected highlight scenes. They feature a 32.4mm wide-angle lens with a 38x optical zoom (50x digital). Both models include a 2D to 3D conversion function and come with four special effect modes (Natural, Pop, Dynamic and Classical) to enhance scenes.

The even more compact and lightweight HC-V100 ($350) and HC-V100M ($400) are roughly the size of a can of soda and feature extended (lower-quality) recording capability and low power consumption for times when it will be impractical to recharge the battery for an extended period. They use a 32.5mm wide-angle lense with 34x optical zoom (42x digital) with a battery rated for up to 155 minutes of recording.

The main difference between the “M” and non-”M” models is that the “M” models offer 16GB of on-board memory as well as an SD card slot, whereas the non-”M” just have the SD card slot.

Lastly, Panasonic is also offering an entry-level 720p HD model, the HC-V10 ($250) that records video in MP4 format or iFrame rather than AVCHD. It features a 63x optical zoom (70x digital). There is also a colorful “active outdoor” user camcorder (the HX-WA2, which sells for $280) which is waterproof up to ten feet (or three meters). In addition to shooting HD videos, the HX-WA2 doubles as a 14-megapixel camera with a built-in Panorama mode that lets users shoot in all directions then stitches the results into horizontal or vertical panoramic pictures. It offers a 28mm lens, a slow-motion mode, is also dustproof and comes in either blue/white or orange/gray color combos.

The shooter uses a 35mm-equivalent full-frame sensor and focuses on image quality first. Canon claims to have better overall color reproduction, primarily for skin tones.

Its body and lens are both focused around video. A large eyepiece and full manual controls on the side emphasize its movie orientation. Its hotshoe also accommodates anything from grips to dedicated preview displays and microphones. Canon’s lens mount system will get models with focal ranges and other traits best suited to typical movie shooting.

Among the examples in the Cinema series are three primes, the 24mm T1.5 L F, 50mm T1.3 L F, and 85mm T1.3 L F. Zooms come in closer 5-60mm T2.6 L S and L SP variants as well as longer-ranged 30-300mm T2.95-3.7 L S and L SP editions.

The camera records natively in 1080P and has two CF card slots to keep shooting for long periods. It uses wither regular Canon EOS lenses or PL lens. Plus it can overlay a time code and output over HD-SDI for editing stations.

The camera is playing the HD movie-level market with a price of $16,000 when it arrives in January.

GoPro on Monday rolled out its latest active lifestyle camera, the HD Hero 2. Its lens promises to be twice as sharp as the original and it gets a number of other enhancements. The Hero 2 can shoot ten 11-megapixel photos in one second with a time lapse feature that will capture an image every 0.5, one, two, 10, 30, and 60 seconds.

Its lens can also now shoot at medium angle 127-degree and narrow angle 90-degree fields of view at the native 1080p resolution. At 960p, there is a new 48FPS feature, while the 720p resolution setting brings the medium and narrow field of views. Finally, in wide VGA resolution, there is a new high-speed 120FPS setting.

The new camera is compatible with all existing HD Hero accessories. Its introduction also means price drops for the existing cameras, with the original HD Hero trading for $200 and the 960 model costing $150.

The HD Hero 2 itself costs $299 and is available in three bundles. The Outdoor edition includes a vented helmet strap, head strap, curved and flat adhesive mounts, and a three-way pivot arm. The Motorsports edition shares the latter three but replaces the first two with a suction cup mount and J-Hook buckle. The Surf edition forgoes all of the preceding for surfboard mounts, FCS plug mounts, and a floating backdoor add-on.

JVC Today announced one of its most unique cameras is coming the US. The GC-PX10 is meant to stand as the best of both moving and still imagery. Through its use of the Falconbrid chip from the TD1, it can record 1080p video at a full 60 frames per second but can still snap 8.3-megapixel shots in mid-video with the relatively large 1/2.3-inch CMOS sensor.

Special modes have their own unique advantages over either camcorders or conventional still cameras. The camera can shoot full 12-megapixel, ISO 6,400 stills at 30 frames per second for two seconds but can shoot 8.3-megapixel stills at an even faster 60 frames per second. Slow motion video is an option at 640×360 at 300 frames per second for a full two hours. JVC imagines a parent recording a child’s entire sports event at the frame rate and having the option of dropping into or out of slow motion at any point in the match.

The entire PX10 design is framed by a DSLR-style grip and barrel-like lens that also houses a stereo microphone. The glass provides a 10X, 6.7-67mm actual zoom and can be bolstered by a supposedly artifact-free digital zoom to hit 19X. A full 32GB of storage is built into the camera from the start and is supported by an SDXC slot that can take as much as 64GB or more of extra footage.

A three-inch tilting touchscreen provides much of the control. Reflecting the design, a power-guided zoom switch is located on the back, not on the lens where it’s more likely to disturb the shot.

JVC hopes for the PX10 to be shipping later in October for $900.

Although it drops from 1080p down to 720p, it can survive underwater depths of up to 10 feet for two hours, or enough to fill much of the sometimes bundled 4GB SDHC card.

The same body also lets it resist dust and shock-proofs it for drops from up to five feet. Video itself adjusts to the elements, with a special white balance that adapts to the color biases underwater.

Regardless of conditions, it has a two-inch preview LCD with a switchable glare shield. The SDHC slot lets it capture as much as 10 hours of video on a 32GB card, and software work in the camera both offers basic image stabilization as well as four live effects filters that include a 1970s 8mm-like filter.

Kodak is shipping the Playfull Waterproof in the fall in either a bring-your-own-storage $100 version or a 4GB bundle for $120.

It replaces the current and one-year old NEX-VG10 and sports manual controls for consumer-level videographers. The megapixel count of the Exmor APS HD CMOS sensor grows from 14.2 to 16.1, with RAW photos an option alongside JPEG.

Like with DSLRs, the background can be defocused through depth-of-field effects when the lens allows. The camera can shoot 1080p video in AVCHD format and, in Europe, gets new 50p and 25p progressive frame rate options; 60p is expected for the US. The Quad Capsule Spatial Array Microphone now supports stereo and 5.1 channel surround. Also new is an audio level control and inputs for connecting both an external microphone and monitoring headphones.

A body redesign includes a different handgrip meant to improve stability. The control dial can be accessed even with the LCD panel closed, allowing manual adjustment of exposure, iris and more. A second record button exists for easier access when shooting from low angles, and there are more hard function keys.

A three-inch LCD (We first had it as an seven inch screen in error) touchscreen serves as the preview source and rotates over 270 degrees while getting more functions. The new camcorder will be bundled with a 18-200mm, f3.5-6.3 E-mount lens. It has an 11x optical zoom range and built-in stabilization. There are six other E-mount lenses on offer as well. An LA-EA2 adapter lets users shoot with A-mount lenses.

The new camcorder bundled with the lens will cost about $2,200, while a body-only variant will cost $1,600. Either ships in November.

Vivitar has introduced its DVR 690HD waterproof pocket camcorder for underwater recording, safe up to 10 feet deep — with a 4xdigital zoom, included microphone and speaker that shoots 720p 30fps video onto a standard SD or SDHC card. Captured video (which is in Motion JPEG format) can be directly output to a TV using an included AV cableor transferred on to a computer.

Other features on the camera include a two-inch TFT LCD display, standard-definition options, a rechargeable battery pack and a low suggested retail price tag ($60). The unit is offered in a wide variety of colors and comes with Windows software for easy uploading to various social media and photo storage services such as Myspace, Facebook, Flickr, Photobucket, YouTube and others (Mac users can use iPhoto, iMovie or image capture to transfer, edit and upload video from the camera).

The use of M-JPEG as a format is somewhat unusual, as it consumes more space on storage cards than the more popular MPEG-4 format. Users should assume roughly one gigabyte of storage space for every five to six minutes of video. The camera will be available both directly from Vivitar online as well as through retailers such as Target, Wal-Mart, Staples, K-Mart and RadioShack.

Sony began selling 8mm video recording equipment in 1985. It continued to sell camcorders using the popular format until 2008. Ultimately, however the format was replaced by both amateurs and professionals with digital tapes and then flash drives. Sony sold over 57 million 8mm camcorders from 1985 to 2008.

The company will continue to sell 8mm tapes for an unspecified time.

The B10 serves as one of the first pocket camcorders to arrive after Cisco axed the flip and has a fixed zoom but a more pocketable, three-ounce form with a two-inch LCD for previews. Upgrading to the vertical design P100 adds a 5X optical zoom and a swiveling touchscreen to compose the shot.

Both work with Macs and Windows PCs and are available today at an official $119.99 price for the B10 and $179.99 for the P100, although Toshiba is already selling the new Camileos at a $20 discount.

Cisco discontinued the Flip brand in mid-April among fierce competition from cellphone cameras. Flip has posted a guide online on how users can back up their videos from FlipShare.

Videos uploaded to Facebook and YouTube from the Flip cameras don’t have to be backed up as they’re unaffected by the deadline. Flip will also continue to provide its FlipShare video software for two and a half years, or until December 31, 2013.

The end of 2013 is also when Cisco will stop providing technical support to the cameras themselves.

The LS-20M features up to 1080p (at 30 frames per second) video recording along with up to 24-bit/96kHz sound, along with other features.

The HD camera can also be set to record at 720p (30fps) or standard-definition (640×480 at 30fps) using AVCHD/MPEG-4 (MOV) format. Audio can be recorded at 96 or 44.1kHz in lossless PCM format (WAV), or directly to MP3 at either 320 or 256kbps (both 44.1kHz). The unit includes a 2GB SD card, which is enough storage for 15 minutes of recording at the highest video settings, or one hour at the lowest video settings. For audio alone, a 2GB card provides for 55 minutes at 96kHz, three hours at 44.1kHz or up to 16 hours using the MP3 modes. SD or SDHC cards up to 32GB in capacity are accepted in the unit.

The camera features an image stabilizer, a digital 4X zoom and auto-sensing reverse angle recording. The recorder includes adjustable microphone sensitivity, auto or manual recording levels and noise cancellation with high sensitivity. The unit also includes in-camera effects like “pinhole,” “pop art,” “rock,” and “sketch” to give video an artistic effect.

The unit is expected to debut in North America June 10th, and optional accessories such as stands, remotes and alternate mics should also be available around the same time. The U.S. retail price is set at $300. Olympus has posted a specs page and e-mail notification signup when the unit is available.

Its Camileo BW10 is its first waterproof video camera and can submerge in up to 6.5 feet of water. The BW10 is said to be rugged above ground as well, although Toshiba hasn’t said whether there’s any extra dust- or shockproofing.

As a camcorder, it captures 1080p MPEG-4 video and five-megapixel stills with a light-sensitive CMOS sensor, an f2.8 lens, and image stabilization helping underwater or in low light. Breaking slightly from the pack, it uses a micro USB connector rather than a direct USB plug, but it still has bundled software to help upload to YouTube.

The camera depends on an SDXC card slot to hold video and lasts for about 70 minutes of non-stop movies on its battery.

Stores should already have the BW10 for $150 in silver and yellow.

Two units need to be combined in order to perform this, however. The 3D Assist Function is part of the update, as is a Scan Reverse function, Double Slot Recording for backup, and the option to disable Relay Recording.

There is also an OIS Lens Shift feature that optically aligns the two camcorders to make sure they’re both on the same plane. A Focal Length Guide will help display the zoom position of each camera in relation to the other and calibrate them. The Scan Reverse function lets recorded images to be flipped on either the horizontal or vertical axis or both at the same time when using mirror rigs.

The feature will be shown off at the NAB show in Las Vegas next week.
