Denon has revealed the latest additions to its networked AV receiver lineup, designed to suit users with a range of budgets. The new INCOMMAND models also all support Apple’s lossless AirPlay wireless standard, which adds streaming support for the full range of Apple iOS devices and Macs. Three of the four new models also offer support for the new 4K Ultra HD standard.

The top of the range AVR-X4000 ($1300) offers 7.2 channels with that also features 7 discrete output stages with each channel rated at 125 watts. The AVR-X4000 also incorporates 7 HDMI inputs and 3 HDMI outputs with two for the main room and one for another room. Sound processing includes Audyssey DSX, Dolby Pro Logic IIz and a DTS Neo:X decoders. Video processing includes conversion of SD content to HD, while 1080p videos can also be upscaled to 4K Ultra HD.

Three other models sit under the AVR-X4000 and include the AVR-X3000 ($900), AVR-2000 ($650) and the AVR-1000 ($450). Naturally, with the lower prices, each incorporates progressively fewer features. The AVR-X3000 retains similar audio and video decoding capabilities of the high-end model, but reduces power output to 105 watts though still supports 7.2 channels. The AVR-X2000 drops its channels down to 7.1, while also reducing output to 95 watts. The low-end AVR-X1000 supports 5.1 surround, drops output to 80 watts and loses any 4K support.

Logitech has taken the wraps off two new smart remote controls, the Harmony Ultimate and the Smart Control. Both products incorporate Logitech’s Harmony Hub and Harmony Smartphone App to enable closed-cabinet control and one-touch access to game consoles from you’re the remote or a user’s smartphone. The Harmony Ultimate can also program Philips Hue wireless lights for brightness and color.

The Logitech Harmony Ultimate and Logitech Harmony Smart Control are universal and are compatible with over 225,000 home-entertainment devices from over 5,000 brands. The Harmony Ultimate includes a 2.4-inch color touchscreen that enables users to control all of the key functions directly from their remote without having to to look up at their TV. It also features blacklit keys and produces vibration feedback to let users know that their commands have been recognized, while it can also control up to 15 devices. Buttons can also be programmed for short or long presses, doubling the number of assignable functions.

The Harmony Smart Control is a bundles package that includes a much more simplifed remote control, but comes with a complete Logitech smartphone app that turns a smartphone into a full function universal remote control. It is limited to controlling up to 8 devices over a user’s smartphone or the bundled remote. The combination allows users to execute most of the functions of the more expensive Harmony Ultimate, but stop short on features like Philips Hue control.

The Logtitech Harmony Ultimate ($350) and Smart Control ($130) are available for pre-order now, and will ship in late April through early May.

The new receivers incorporate high-resolution file format playback, expanded multi-zone and multi-source management and functionality, custom installation features, AirPlay and 4K Ultra HD compatibility. Both receivers are controllable by way of Pioneer’s smartphone apps for iOS and Android.

The VSX-43 provides additional setup flexibility and can be configured either for a true 7.1-channel setup or for 5.1-channel, with the two extra channels powering a pair of speakers in a second room, with the ability to simultaneously send two different sources to each zone. A movie can be viewed in the main zone while music from a CD is played in the second zone. The VSX-43 is controllable from a mobile device with Pioneer’s ControlApp.

The VSX-70 offers simultaneous entertainment in up to three zones — a main zone, two speakers in a second room, and a third “HDZone” with an additional HDMI source to the third room. The HDZone can also be controlled through Pioneer’s iControlAV2013 App.

With eight HDMI inputs and highly configurable 7.1-channels, the VSX-70 is ideal for consumers and custom installers who want maximum connection flexibility, eliminating the need to set up separate receivers in each room. Additionally, the VSX-70 includes full two-way RS-232-over-IP control, and is certified for use with custom remote control systems from Crestron and Control4. The VSX-70 works with the new iControlAV2013 App.

Both receivers offer playback of WAV, MP3, WMA, AAC, AIFF, ALAC, and FLAC files, all with gapless playback support where applicable from a networked computer or plugged-in drive via the front USB port. Both receivers are Pandora music service compatible, have Windows 8 certification, and feature DLNA 1.5 connectivity for music content playback from a networked DLNA server running on a Windows PC, Macintosh, or smartphone connected on a home network. Both receivers have an Ethernet connection, with Wi-Fi available by way of an optional adapter.

Elite model receivers allow iOS users to enjoy playback of audio content stored on their devices as well as the display of album art and metadata when connected to a television monitor. Users can take advantage of the convenience of Apple’s AirPlay, allowing users to stream their iTunes music whether from Mac or PC, as well as music stored on an iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch.

Additionally, Mobile High Definition Link (MHL) connectivity has been built into each receiver. The front HDMI input doubles as an MHL 2.0 input for connection of a suitably equipped Android smartphone or tablet for media playback. Android users with compatible HTC smartphones (including the new HTC One phone) are able to use HTC Connect, which enables direct music streaming to both the VSX-43 and the VSX-70.

The Pioneer Elite VSX-43 and VSX-70 receivers are now available at authorized Pioneer retailers, with suggested retail prices of $525 and $750 respectively.

Audience has announced that it is now shipping the ClairAudient “The ONE” single-driver speaker set.

The new model is the smallest in Audience’s ClairAudient speaker lineup, at just seve inches high by 5.5 inches wide by seven inches deep. The ONE is tailored for desktop music listening, compact high-end stereo systems and surround-sound home theater.

The ONE incorporates the same exclusive A3-S full-range crossover-less driver as every Audience ClairAudient loudspeaker, along with a tailored passive radiator. The A3-S is a full-range high-power, 12mm excursion, ultra-low distortion transducer. The custom design eliminates the need for a separate woofer, midrange driver, tweeter and crossover network. The ONE is optimized for 50Hz to 20kHz in-room response when placed on a desk or near a wall; a subwoofer is required for full-frequency response when the units are positioned away from a wall.

The Audience ClairAudient The ONE loudspeaker is now available for $995 per pair in black and blue finishes; white and red finishes will be available soon. Available accessories include desktop stands at $75 per pair and Audience Ohno speaker cables at $199 per 3-foot pair or $249 for a 5-foot pair.

High-end consumer audio manufacturer Parasound has released a CD player driven by a Mini-ITX computer, powered by Linux to make CDs “sound significantly better than anyone has imagined possible” according to the manufacturer. The Halo CD 1 utilizes a PC-grade CD-ROM drive that reads the track multiple times before it is converted to audio, nearly guaranteeing no error in playback.

The company has written an extensive white paper on the subject — in describing how the device works, it says that “the CD 1 reads a CD multiple times before committing data to an enormous memory buffer stored in RAM. Every data sector is initially read twice and the two reads are compared. When the two reads match it is because no bit errors were detected and that is accumulated in the buffer memory. When the two reads do not match, it is because an error has been detected. That sector is then read repeatedly until good data is obtained. If the maximum repeat read threshold is reached and the 30 seconds buffer is about to run out, the system switches to its pre-interpolation analysis mode. Data reading is then moved forward by only one sample at a time until the bad fragment is isolated.”

The device has one coaxial BNC S/PDIF output connector, a set of RCA connectors, and a TOSLINK optical output. The manufacturer recommends the coaxial BNC S/PDIF output, with the TOSLINK as a secondary, as the RCA jack “might cause some signal reflections in the digital cable and more jitter than a BNC connection.”

The SC-HTB770 is a 300-Watt 3.1-channel system that can be changed from being separate speakers into a single long soundbar, accompanied by a down-firing, wireless subwoofer. Using Dolby Digital, Pro Logic II, Dolby Virtual Speaker, and DTS, the system also offers Bluetooth connectivity, can accept three HDMI inputs, and two optical inputs. The 240-Watt SC-HTB370 loses the HDMI inputs and Bluetooth, but the 2.1-channel system retains the soundbar functionality.

The SC-HTB70 and SC-HTB65 models are sound bars designed to allow for multiple wall-mounting or TV-stand setups. Both 2.1-channel systems can detect if its speakers are vertical or horizontal, adjusting its directional characteristics automatically. The 90-Watt SC-HTB65 offers two such positions, while the 120-Watt SC-HTB70 boosts the number of orientations up to four.

All four systems will be on sale in March, with the SC-HTB770 and SC-HTB370 costing $400 and $300 respectively, while the SC-HTB70 and SC-HTB65 sound bars will cost $200 and $180.

The B&O Playmaker can connect to any smartphone, tablet, media server, or computer. The Playmaker is compatible with major wireless streaming formats, and setup is said to be as simple as plugging it into compatible speakers.

Since all B&O speakers feature built-in amplifiers, there is no need for a separate amplifier in addition to the Playmaker. Users can just connect two BeoLab speakers to the Playmaker and then begin streaming music wirelessly. The device can connect with the entire range of Bang & Olufsen’s luxury speaker docks, including the BeoPlay A8.

The device measures 6.18×5.35×4.7in and weighs 1.13lb. The Playmaker is compatible with AirPlay and DLNA formats, allowing it to stream from any number of sources. It also features Ethernet and 802.11b/g 2.4GHz connectivity. The B&O Playmaker will be available in Bang & Olufsen showrooms across the US, Canada, and Mexico at the end of July 2012. It retails for $425, and a bundle is available containing the Playmaker and the BeoLab 3 loudspeaker for $4,310.

iHome has released its first docking speaker tower with color-changing LEDs, the iP76. There are 16 LED clusters that can light up in seven colors and fade, strobe, or pulse in tune with the music, or simply light up in a selected color. At the top is an iPod/iPhone dock that will charge the devices as well as play audio content from them.

Available colors include indigo, blue, green, white, orange, red, violet, and yellow. There is also a component video output present for outputting an iOS device’s video to a connected display or HDTV. Bluetooth technology lets users connect wirelessly to Apple or other music players. Finally, a 3.5mm auxiliary input jack offers yet another connection option.

There are four speakers built into the tower, each enclosed in Reson8 chambers. The speaker is compatible with iHome’s apps and can double as an alarm clock. A remote control is included. Unfortunately, the iPhone 4S doesn’t seem to be supported.

The iP76 is now shipping, priced at $200.

Sonos has announced that its wireless subwoofer, the Sonos Sub, is set to ship on June 19. The speaker, which is designed to work with the company’s other amplified systems with wireless support, features single-button setup and a resin cabinet built with inward-facing speaker cones to eliminate buzz and rattle.

Powered by dual Class D amplifiers, the integrated DSP circuitry aims for “zero-loss audio quality” in handling filter settings, time alignment and equalization. The Sub will work with existing Sonos amplified components, including the Connect:Amp, ZonePlayer 120 and 100, Play:5, and Play:3. Connectivity is provided by a proprietary wireless system, instead of existing methods such as Bluetooth or AirPlay, with remote control provided by downloadable apps for computers and handheld devices.

The gloss-black version of the Sonos Sub sells for $700, while the matte-black finish is expected to arrive in October for around $600.

The new models are said to integrate improved AM/FM tuners, displaying RDS data for song titles and artists, while international variants add support for DAB, DAB+ and T-DMB digital signals without requiring an add-on module.

Users can also take advantage of a touchpad along the top edge to control power and snooze, while dual alarms now can be set to play from different sources.

Both models retain the same “waveguide speaker technology” as their predecessors. The system utilizes relatively small speakers but is claimed to achieve robust presentation across a wide frequency range.

The standard Wave radio provides an AM/FM tuner and auxiliary input for other sources, while the Wave music system integrates a slot-load CD player. The company also offers optional input accessories, such as an iPod dock and a Bluetooth adapter.

The Wave radio III currently sells from the company’s US website for $350, while the international version fetches £450 (~$728 USD) in the UK. The Wave music system III is available domestically for $500, with UK pricing set at £600 (~$970 USD). Customers can choose from silver, gray and white colors.

Pioneer introduce four new mainstream AV receivers that mostly bring Internet awareness to the core of its lineup. The top three, the VSX-822, VSX-1022, and VSX-1122, all have support for AirPlay, DLNA, and vTuner Internet radio to grab media from iOS devices, iTunes, and some other hardware on the same local network. Ethernet is common across all of them, although the 1122 has the choice of a Wi-Fi adapter to reduce clutter.

These same three have the option of a Bluetooth adapter to stream audio directly within the spec’s 33-foot range. Pioneer’s Air Jam app lets four iOS devices join at once to create a shared playlist. VSX-1122 owners get extra treatment through an AVNavigator controllable manual for computers and iPads, and an iControlAV2012 app that can tap into the finer-grained sound adjustment and sound field control the receiver allows.

Regardless of the receiver, the three plus the entry VSX-522 can support up to 192kHz, 24-bit audio from a front USB port or (on most) the network. They likewise support HDMI 1.4a and the more recent HDMI Standby Through mode, which can let sound and video pass through the receiver in idle mode if it doesn’t need to be active.

Outside of networking, the model split is dictated by sound channels and processing. The 522 and 822 are both 5.1-channel receivers with up to 140W per channel and differences such as five versus six HDMI ports. Moving to the 1022 adds 7.1-channel sound and one more HDMI port while keeping the power output. An 1122 lifts the power per channel to 165W, adds a 7.2-channel option, and includes both phase control to better sync the subwoofer delay and an advanced video processor with more control and compensation for low-bitrate digital content.

Prices start at $249 for a VSX-522 and move to $379, $449, and $599 for the 822, 1022, and 1122 respectively. All of them should be in stores before the end of the month.

Bowers & Wilkins has updated its Mini Theater range, including the aging M-1 compact speakers with new drivers, while the PV1D subwoofer enjoyed a more thorough reworking. It gets the same digital platform as the range-topping DB1 and a fresh OLED display. The dynamic EQ has also been updated and the woofer now goes down to 7.5Hz.

Technically unchanged is the ASW608 subwoofer from the Mini Theater range, though it gets a new matte white color option to match the full-range M1 speakers.

The M-1 speaker also got detailed changes like new speaker cable ports with a table stand and wall bracket included, with floor stands optional.

The PV1D, in the meantime, includes SubApp PC software that lets users make advanced settings.

Listeners can look to spend $250 on each monitor, $1,700 on the PV1D and $500 on the ASW608.

Each component can be had on its own, or B&W offers two 5.1-channel bundles. Each M-1 costs $250, the PV1D carries a $1,700 tag, and the ASW608 is priced at $500. The MT-60D and MT-50. The former uses the PV1D subwoofer, while the latter swaps it for the less costly ASW608 sub. They cost $2,950 and $1,750, respectively. Each floor stand for the M-1 costs $150.

The new speakers should be shipping now.

The 3.6 update pulls support for copy-protected Windows Media files, leaving Zune Pass users and those still tied to mostly inactive PlaysForSure DRM stores without a way to stream their music to Sonos boxes. The company hasn’t given an explanation for the switch but has been asked for a comment.

The step isn’t likely to affect most listeners, but it follows a history of the copy protection Microsoft once assumed would be ubiquitous ultimately hurting users. As it closed MSN Music in favor of the Zune Marketplace, Microsoft nearly locked users out of their own music with plans to take down the servers authorizing music. MSN, Walmart, Yahoo, and others ended up closing shop while Apple’s iTunes survived and was one of the more vocal advocates of going DRM-free.

Outside of the copy protection issue, Sonos’ update also gives Android tablet users a more optimized interface. Spotify use has been improved, and bugs in audio for both the Play:5 (formerly ZonePlayer S5) and Connect:Amp have been fixed.

Version 3.6 needs both a firmware update to the audio system itself as well as a software update for the Mac, Windows PCs, iOS, and Android to reflect the changes.

Pioneer has outlined three upcoming semi-portable audio players in its new Steez lineup. The STZ-D10S-L Solo, STZ-D10T-G Duo and STZ-D10Z-R Crew are unique in that they offer users the ability to change the tempo of the music, set cue points, battle with friends and build playlists. It comes through Pioneer’s Mixtrax software and offers tricks that are usually found on DJ turntables and mixers.

While the tempo is changed, the players keep the song pitch, again much like what DJs uses. The eight-beat skip helps with choreography, skipping forward or backward by up to eight counts. A Dance Cue feature lets listeners set a specific start point in a song rather than at the very beginning of a song, while Dance Boost feature can be set to make specific instruments stand out when training.

Those who want hands-off music can invoke an Auto DJ mode that will play music of the same genre, beats per minute, artist, and other criteria. An Auto Battle mode creates a battle sequence for dance-offs and includes a countdown timer on the LCD screen along with voice and tone prompts to alert dancers when 10 seconds of a track are left.

All Steez systems get a credit-card sized wireless remote.

The three share 4GB of built-in memory, with the Solo and Duo getting two 2.5W speakers, while the Crew has a pair of 10W speakers along with a 20W subwoofer. The Solo will cost $300, the Duo $350 and the Crew $500. All ship in November.

It uses a multi-touch screen with extra Android keys as its controls and Wi-Fi to share the radio connection.

The Lynx has full DVR-style live pausing, rewinding, and recording. Listeners can also catch up to existing shows on demand with a Start Now feature. A microSDHC slot helps get media on to and off of the radio, which can last for 30 hours at a time on battery power alone.

Best Buy didn’t give an indication of the release date for the new receiver, although it did give away that the device should go on sale for $250 when it’s ready.

Both offerings maintain the company’s focus on the high-end market, featuring compact speaker arrays built into a single sound-bar that can be placed in front of a television. The sound bars are paired with a wireless subwoofer to handle low frequencies.

The CineMate 1 SR offers an audio calibration system that analyzes sound levels throughout a room and adjusts frequencies for the specific acoustics in different areas. The sound bar can be connected directly to a television without the need for a dedicated receiver.

The Lifestyle 135 features a control console with six connections for video and audio sources, along with an FM/AM tuner and a dock for iPods and iPhones. The console provides an onscreen navigation interface for setup, while enabling video sources to be upscaled to 1080p.

Bose currently sells the CineMate 1 SR for $1500, while the Lifestyle 135 commands $2500.

The Dash HID-B7 and HID-B70 are now PC-free, having their own setup processes, and have a simple web browser for a quick information check. The B70 adds a built-in lithium-ion battery to let it serve as a traveling clock radio.

Either Dash gets online through Wi-Fi.

The B7 and B70 together will ship in October at prices of $130 for the black-only B7 and $170 for the blue, brown, and orange B70 editions.

The N200 is identical to its European sibling and has access to the full Sony music and movie services along with local network sharing over DLNA. It upgrades its ancestor with 3D and the option of watching live events.

N200 devices reach the US in October for $100 and will have free Android and iOS remote control apps.
