While currently restricted to the iPad users, the new feature brings the software in line with the functionality of the current web and TV app. At the end of a TV episode Netflix will minimize the credits and cue the next episode in the season. If users do nothing, then the episode will will automatically begin playing within 10 seconds.

In addition, post play also works for movies by providing users with three recommendations of other movies they may enjoy.

Aside from AT&T, these include Bright House Networks, Charter, Comcast, Cox, Midcontinent Communications, Optimum, Time Warner and Verizon.

FOX NOW streams episodes of Fox TV shows like Bob’s Burgers, New Girl, and The Simpsons. The v1.6 update adds support for both AT&T and Suddenlink customers; previously, just Mediacom and Verizon were compatible. A number of other changes have been made as well, such as defaulting videos to fullscreen, and the addition of a “streamlined universal navigation drawer” to browse between shows, the Fox schedule, and bookmarks. Episode sync no longer requires a login.
Sheedy avoided saying too much, but was able to confirm that the Swype team has been in talks with Apple to one extent or another.

While that’s interesting to hear, it sure leaves a lot open to guesswork and interpretation.

Netflix has updated its free iOS app to version 4.0 with various improvements in episode selection, audio and subtitle selection and various bug fixes. The iPad gets a new episode chooser to make finding specific episodes of a TV show easier, while both the iPhone and iPad versions gain a redesigned audio and subtitle options selector. Alongside the update, Netflix announced it would begin offering a $12 per month “family plan,” with up to four simultaneous streams.

The company is expecting to hit 30 million users sometime in the current quarter, outpacing the viewership of most cable networks. The service now accounts for a third of all Internet downstream traffic in the US, also outpacing rivals such as Amazon, iTunes and even YouTube.

The use of mobile apps for streaming programs has increased even as the company’s original DVD-rental business has decreased. Netflix is now offered on most set-top boxes, including Apple TV and Xbox among others.

The $12 “family plan” will add the ability for users to register up to four devices (including iOS that will be able to stream video from one account simultaneously, a doubling of the current limit. Users interested in the plan should note, however, that the increased fee does not provide for the increase in bandwidth from the user’s service provider, which may charge more for those who exceed allotted caps.

The software allows streaming of CBS shows within 24 hours of their original broadcast time, with the exception of new episodes of primetime programs, which are only available eight days after broadcast. Once the fall season starts the title will integrate with the CBS Connect app, letting people use an iOS Device as a second screen, with things like synced content and integrated social network feeds.

CBS is promising equivalent streaming apps for “all major mobile and tablet platforms later this year,” such as Android and Windows 8.

Marvel has launched a new appor the iPhone and iPad, Marvel Unlimited. Unlike the publisher’s main iOS app, the new one finally allows access to comics tied to Marvel’s subscription options, which have likewise been renamed under the Unlimited moniker. Signing up currently grants access to over 13,000 comics, some dating as far back as 70 years; the most recent comics, though, date back six months.

A subscription costs $10 per month, or $60 per year. A free trial is also available. Readers must subscribe through the Marvel website, though, as the company has chosen to avoid in-app purchases, from which Apple takes a 30 percent cut. One perk of the app is that up to six comics can be saved for offline reading when not on a Wi-Fi or cellular connection.

The revised video app now lets iPhone and iPad owners send the YouTube video from their phone or tablet to Google TV-compatible gear, such as an XBox or PS3.

The new feature mimics that of Apple’s AirPlay, which can push on-device media to the Apple TV (and TV to which the Apple TV is connected). The new YouTube app also improves stability of streams over Wi-Fi and makes a number of small performance improvements.

The app was initially released for iOS roughly six months ago, but launched without a native iPad interface. Both the iPhone and iPad interfaces have been tweaked to use a new look, and sport a new setting for managing cache size.

The app is mainly intended to stream music bought through Amazon’s MP3 store without having to download the content to a device. Users can sort music by artist, album or genre, and create custom playlists. For convenience the app can also play local files, duplicating the functionality of Apple’s own Music software.

In both cases users will get redesigned homescreens, new layouts for tag results, and a new method for browsing what friends have been tagging. Similarly, new activity streams show what people in general are tagging, including TV in the US. An added mapping feature shows what people are listening to in a particular city.

Shazam is also carrying over accelerated song recognition from its phone apps, along with fullscreen lyrics. Some other planned changes include streamlined sharing, and automatic resubmission in cases where a tablet has poor network reception. On iOS, the new Shazam app will be universal, instead of requiring separate iPhone and iPad versions.

Shazam is promising both the iOS and Android updates in “coming weeks.” The company meanwhile claims to have reached over 300 million users, worldwide and across all platforms.

Today we just got some of the first Spring training games and you could see them live, now that MLB Advance Media has released the latest version of At Bat. At Bat is available for download from the iOS App Store and Android Google Play store. This season, pro baseball’s app is now offering a cross-platform subscription. The 2012 season app hit 7 million, which surpassed the downloads during the 2010 and 2011 seasons combined.

How to Get The App

To get the 2013 version of the app, iOS users simply have to download the update in the App Store — no need to download a whole new app. Returning Android users will have a choice depending on the app they have installed. If you had the app called At Bat, you just need to look for the update; if you had the At Bat ’12 app, you’ll have to look for a new app to download. (I’ll update this story with the direct link as soon as the app goes live.)

The app is free, but to unlock access to live games for the 2013 season and World Series, it requires a one-time in-app purchase $19.99 subscription fee — or iOS users can pay in month installments of $2.99. However, as with last year’s version, subscribers to the league’s MLB.TV subscription plan for watching games online can get At Bat 13 for free.

Android owners can subscribe for a one-time annual fee of $19.99 for the entire 2013 season, Spring Training through the World Series or login with their MLB.TV . Premium subscribers receive At Bat 13 for free. Live video and full game archived video only is available on compatible Android devices running OS 2.2 or later.

This year, At Bat is offering some cost-saving deals for subscribers. Previously, fans had to pay separately for access to the mobile app as well as live game audio through the MLB.TV desktop website, but At Bat 13 subscribers will now get GameDay Audio (MLB.TV’s most popular feature) for free. And for subscribers who may own both iOS and Android devices: one subscription works on any platform now; you no longer have to pay for access on each.

New Features for 2013 Spring Training Update

Multi-platform live audio access for At Bat subscribers, offering account portability to listen to live games on Mac/PC desktops and laptops.

Universal iOS and Android support for At Bat subscribers, full feature accessibility across all supported smartphones and tablets.

Sortable batting, pitching and fielding statistics, plus favorite team enhancements (iPad and Android tablets).

Redesigned individual team pages, updated news section interface, and expanded video highlight integration (iPhone and Android phones).

Classic games video library archive, re-architected app navigation, and searchable video highlight library expansion to include access to complete video archives (all devices).

Additional push notification options (iPhone).

In-app annual subscription purchase (Google Play).

While they are not yet ready, a version of At Bat for Blackberry 10 and the Kindle will arrive by Opening Day.

Mobotap’s alternative browser for iOS, Dolphin (free), has been updated (to version 7.2 for iPhone, and v6.2 for iPad), which fixes a number of troublesome bugs and other issues. The new stable release addresses a major problem with formatting Evernote text, and corrects a problem that causes pages to display incorrectly while scrolling. Another change prevents the password dialog from appear when it isn’t needed.

The browser, which is available for both iOS and Android, distinguishes itself by offering a more customizable style along with extensive voice and gesture support. For example, users can simply speak “Wikipedia” to be taken there, or draw a custom shape that is associated with their favorite web site rather than typing in the URL.

In October, Dolphin launched the Jet Pack add-on, that enhances HTML5 and JavaScript performance by leveraging more of the mobile device’s GPU.

Also fixed in the latest update was a bug that prevented Google.com from being shown in desktop view.

Apple has officially released iOS 6.1 for the iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch. The update is available through iTunes or as an over-the-air download, and makes several important tweaks. It enables LTE on the extended number of carriers Apple announced last week; an official list has been posted on the company’s website.

On the the security front it fixes to vulnerabilities in Identity Services, Unicode, WebKit, and Wi-Fi, among other areas.

Siri has been upgraded with the ability to buy movie tickets through Fandango, but only in the US. All iTunes Match subscribers, though, should now be able to download individual songs via iCloud. A minor addition is a new button allowing people to reset the advertising identifier.

The update requires at least an iPhone 3GS, iPad 2, or fourth-generation iPod touch. The size of the download depends on the device being updated.

Normally the game runs $0.99 for the iPhone and $2.99 for the iPad. The game does offer in-app purchases, and those prices have not been waived, so you will want to remember that when pondering whether or not to acquire extra bundles of tools. Some in-app purchases for Angry Birds Rio run as much as $20.

Angry Birds Rio brought the first new twist to the Angry Birds genre and Rovio has since updated the app with power-ups (in-app purchases) which give you extra anti-monkey tools to work with while hurling the birds off the sling-shot. Skifta, which has been available to Android devices for some time, uses the DLNA protocol to enable devices such as smartphones and tablets push media content from their device to their DLNA-capable TV or stereo.

The iPhone does not natively support DLNA. Instead, Skifta for iOS uses Apple’s own AirPlay technology. Using Skifta, iPhone and iPad owners can connect their devices to other DLNA equipment and share their media. The iPhone and iPad can already do this through the AppleTV, but not directly to TV sets. Skifta fills in the gap for iOS owners.

Photo-sharing site Flickr is offering its free users an upgraded trial membership at no charge for a limited time. Messages sent to users under the subject line “Merry Flickr” state that users will gain three months of access to Flickr Pro automatically, and comes shortly after Instagram caused a public outcry by altering its terms of service to reveal that the company could use members’ content in advertising.

Flickr users who accept the Pro offer will be able to view their entire photo library instead of the last 200 images; can upload unlimited numbers of photos; can download originally-uploaded high-resolution photos, and also upload and play unlimited HD videos to the service. The upgrade requires users to click a banner on the website or within the mobile app, and does not require any form of payment or an automatic renewal before the trial run ends on March 22. Accounts will automatically revert back to their original status, though users can opt to pay $7 per quarter or a flat $25 per year to continue their Pro membership if they wish.

The timing of the offer appears to capitalize on the recent user uprising on Instagram, caused by a change to its terms of service. Originally, Instagram changed the user agreement to make clearer that it could potentially sell users’ images stored on the site with no compensation offered to the user, a language change more than a policy change — but one that has since been reverted back to the previous phrasing.

What many Instagram users may not understand, however, is that the ability of Instagram to use photos without compensation in advertising is still there, as it has always been. The company, which is searching for a sustainable business model, has clarified that although the agreement allows them to “sub-license” photos without payment or notification, it does not plan to do so, and will more thoroughly change the language in that section to reflect this at some future date.

Other services, such as Facebook, also have given themselves the right to use uploaded content as they wish without payment, such as in ads to promote the service. Flickr, by contrast, has taken a different approach: the company facilitates an optional “Creative Commons” license for user photos to aid in non-commercial sharing without copyright issues, and also features a program run in conjunction with Getty Images, allowing users to make photos available for consideration to purchase. If selected, the users receive payment for images sold through the stock photography company.

Painting program for the iPad Procreate was updated Tuesday to version 1.7, considered a major upgrade that offers a new 4K Cinema canvas (up to 4096×4096 for the recent iPads, 4096×2616 for the iPad Mini and iPad 2), a new fullscreen interface, new blend modes, a redesigned layers interface, an improved Silica engine, more undos, improved brush settings, a new transform system and much more. The program offers an OpenGL-driven, 64-bit, multicore proprietary engine, shareable and importable custom brushes, and continuous auto-save.

The new version also features custom canvas size creation, file sharing and importing, export both to global social services as well as PSD files and other standard formats and a dozen new blend modes — including many familiar to Photoshop users like dodge and burn, luminosity, difference, hue & saturation and more. The new transform system adds distort, shear and non-uniform transformations. The app, made exclusively for the iPad, now offers multiple swatch panels, a new eyedropper tool, improved brush settings interface and pressure settings, along with a new artwork orientation gesture and three new Procreate Artery sets.

The program has also been updated to add support for the latest Pogo Connect and palm rejection. On a recent full-size iPad such as the third- or fourth-generation, up to 17 layers are supported at 4K sizes, and 28 layers and half-maximum (a maximum limit of 128 layers depends on canvas size and system resources). The iPad 2 and the iPad mini can support up to four layers at 4K sizes and 16 layers at half-max sizes. The new Silica 2.0 engine keeps 64-bit tools fluid and speedy, including a responsive smudge tool and 250 levels of undo and re-do.

Procreate comes with 48 built-in brushes, while a total of 72 other official brushes are available as in-app purchases. The app features app-wide Dropbox integration, a dual-texture system and many multi-touch gestures. The program sells for $5 with various additional brush sets available for $1 each. It requires iOS 6 or later.

The well-regarded Final Fantasy IV will arrive on the iOS platform on December 20, in time to celebrate the series’ 25th anniversary. Creator Square Enix already has a number of Final Fantasy games available for iOS, but Final Fantasy IV is particularly fondly remembered as a landmark of the series that introduced a number of concepts and characters, along with an involved plot and high-quality music score that resonated with players. To celebrate, a rare sale on the other FF titles is currently underway.

As with some of the more recent Final Fantasy titles, the game will be sold for a higher-than-standard price (for a title in this milieu). FF IV will cost $20, lower than Final Fantasy Dimensions but still considered a premium by iOS game standards. Final Fantasy IV will also be released for Android, but not until sometime in 2013, according to the company

The best deal is on Final Fantasy I and II, which are now priced at $4 each (down from $9 normally) on the App Store (Google Play prices have not yet been lowered). The sale began today, and will run for one week until December 14.

Final Fantasy III, offered in separate versions for the iPhone and iPad, is now priced at $9 and $10 respectively (a little less than half off). Final Fantasy Dimensions costs $17, down from its normal $29.

After nearly three-month gap with no official app for Apple’s latest iOS devices, Google has released a version of its iPhone YouTube app optimized for the iPad and iPhone 5. The new universal version also adds video streaming with AirPlay, a feature missing from the original iOS 6 version of the app, which worked only with the iPhone and iPod Touch. Google originally released a version just before the launch of iOS 6, which brought some new features (and also ads for the first time), but left out iPad compatibility.

The new official client also now offers video playlist management, a channel guide for signed-in users, clickable links in video descriptions and improved accessibility using VoiceOver.

Apple’s decision to stop including a YouTube client as part of the default software suite in iOS 6 was met with some criticism, but is seen as being part of a move by Apple to untangle itself from relationships with Google, though the company is free to continue developing and submitting apps (and may even be allowed to bring its own Maps application back to iOS 6 at some point). The previous YouTube client, like the previous Maps app, was a collaboration between the two companies.
