Nvidia has updated its latest mobile chipset with support for Category 4 LTE connectivity. Tegra 4i, similar to Tegra 4 but includes an integrated Nvidia i500 LTE modem, managed to upgrade from Category 3 and its 100Mbps connection to LTE-Advanced and a possible 150Mps speed, without performing any changes to the hardware.

The upgrade was accomplished with changes in software alone. The i500 LTE modem is a software-defined radio that uses Deep Execution Processors, and so was able to be changed without altering anything to it or Tegra 4i at all physically. The use of a software-defined modem also allows it to take up far less space in the chipset itself, allowing more room for other components.

Demonstrations at the CTIA event in Las Vegas shows Tegra 4i working on an LTE-Advanced network at 150Mbps, though emulated due to the lack of live networks using such Category 4 connections. The Phoenix Tegra 4i smartphone is also being demonstrated on a live AT&T LTE network, in order to show off the performance and stability of the software modem when used for voice calls and video streaming.

Dell has lowered the price of its Windows RT tablet from $449 to $299. The drop in price of the XPS 10 slate, possibly due to the underwhelming sales of Windows RT-based tablets across the industry, is accompanied by discounted additions to the tablet, including the keyboard dock and doubling the internal storage.

Increasing the initial 32GB of storage to 64GB costs an extra $50, instead of the $100 it would have cost previously, according to Engadget, with the optional keyboard dock available as a $50 extra in a bundle. Adding a case costs $30, down from $40, but putting 4G LTE onto the tablet remains the same, priced as a $100 extra.

Windows RT has generally seen sluggish sales, with even Microsoft’s own Surface failing to gain any significant traction. The software maker has reportedly updated its requirements to allow smaller form factor devices, such as those with a 7 or 8-inch screen, to exist. This could theoretically allow for cheaper Windows 8 and Windows RT tablets to go on sale.

Nvidia’s forthcoming Tegra 4 chip may have received an early benchmark if an AnTuTu score that has been posted online is to be believed. According to the post, the Tegra 4 produced a score of over 32,000 points, outgunning the 1.9GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon 600 found in the Samsung Galaxy S4. By comparison, the Galaxy S4’s Snapdragon chip produces a score of 25,000 points, while the HTC One with the same Snapdragon chip clocked at 1.7GHz scores 23,600 points.

The figure comes out of China running on what is purported to be Nvidia’s Project Shield Android-powered handheld gaming console. The Project Shield device, first shown at CES in January, is tracking for between Q2 and Q3. It is possible that a developer ran the test with early access to a Project Shield device, or it is a leaked factory prototype.

Or, it also possible that the figures in the AnTuTu benchmark have been faked. Regardless, the result is not beyond the realms of possibility and is probably in line with expectations. It is not until Qualcomm releases the Snapdragon 800 clocking up to 2.3GHz that the performance tables may be turned back in Qualcomm’s favor.

A Windows 8 tablet aimed at business professionals has been unveiled by Toshiba, shortly after the company presented its high-resolution Kirabook. The WT310 tablet houses a 11.6-inch 1080p anti-glare display with gesture-enabled touchscreen controls, and an accompanying DigitizerPen as an additional input option.

Housed in a plastic casing said to protect the internals from drops and shocks, the WT310 has an unnamed Intel processor inside, and eschews the hard disk as storage in favor of an SSD with unannounced capacity. Ports for HDMI, USB 3.0, Gigabit Ethernet and an SD card slot surround the WT310, while connectivity is also provided over Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 4.0, and HSPA+/LTE.

Intel Anti-Theft, software to help prevent unauthorized access, and the Trusted Platform Module are included for data security, with Intel Active Management included to help IT managers maintain the roaming devices. Professionals will also be able to use the included Intel Wireless Display to transfer content to a compatible TV or projector wirelessly, for simpler set-up for presentations.

Toshiba is lining up the WT310 for a UK release sometime in the second quarter, but has not revealed pricing details. A US release could take place shortly afterwards.

The software update will add Play alongside the company’s own app store, boosting the number of apps available to its users by over 700,000, along with the millions of songs found on Google Play Music, and other Google-supplied content.

As part of the software update, the tablets will also receive access to standard Google services found on other devices, including the Chrome browser, Gmail, YouTube, Google Search, and Google Maps. Users will soon see a notification for an automatic over-the-air update over Wi-Fi from later today.

The addition of Google services to the Nook HD and Nook HD+ is an interesting maneuver by Barnes & Noble. Until this point, the Nook HD and Kindle Fire tablets from Amazon were in self-contained ecosystems, requiring the use of their own app and book stores for content. By Barnes & Noble opting to add Google services and the Google Play store to supplement its own offering, this leaves Amazon as the only major Android tablet provider left that avoids Google integration.

The new Mini-T is even smaller than the original Mini-T, and features a new glossy black cabinet, improved signal path design, and the first dedicated subwoofer output available in the device’s class.

The new Mini-T allows consumers to use home speakers instead of resorting to cheaply designed self-powered speakers. The device can be paired with speakers already found in the consumer’s home, or can also be combined with Orb Audio’s Mod1 and Mod2 speakers.

The amplifier delivers 15W per channel, at a 0.04 percent distortion. Efficiency hits 88 percent, with a dynamic range of 102dB.

Mini-T version 2 amplifiers are available as a standalone product for $69. The Mini-T can also be purchased in a package with two Orb Mod1 speakers for $299.

Asus has started shipping its 7-inch MeMO Pad for just $149. The device takes many of its design cues from its stable mate, the Asus Nexus 7, while it also retains the 16GB of on board storage in that device. While the Nexus 7 is limited to either 16GB or 32GB of storage, the Asus MeMO Pad also supports microSD cards up to 32GB.

To help get its price point down, Asus has dropped some sensors while also swapping out the Tegra 3 quad-core CPU found in the Nexus 7. Instead, the MeMO Pad is powered by a dual-core VIA WM8950 dual-core chip. Its 7-inch display has a resolution of 1024×600 with a brightness of 350 nits while it also supports 10-point multi-touch.

Asus says that its 16Wh 4270mAh battery will provide up to 7 hours of battery life. Connectivity includes Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g/n as well as a micro-USB port for charging and transferring files. The MeMO Pad runs Android 4.1 ‘Jelly Bean’ and also comes with 5GB of complimentary Asus WebStorage. The device is available now through a number of retailers including Amazon, GameStop and Frys Electronics in a range of colors including grey, pink and white.

Or, you can buy the tablet for $399 off contract and have the slate added to your AT&T shared data plan. According to the carrier, it is giving you a $100 price break for signing the two-year contract and the remaining $50 discount for buying the tablet from an AT&T store. This is a limited time offer, so you shouldn’t dilly-dally if you really want it. AT&T’s Chris Penrose, the carrier’s Senior VP of emerging devices, might have hinted that the tablet will be made available to other mobile operators when he said that AT&T is the first carrier to connect the Amazon Kindle tablet to its 4G LTE network.

“Being the first carrier to connect Amazon’s Kindle Fire HD to our 4G LTE network provides the best mobile internet experience. Combining our 4G LTE with Kindle Fire HD’s rich features at an incredible price point yields a great value and experience for our customers.”-Chris Penrose, senior vice president of emerging devices, AT&T

The Amazon Kindle Fire HD 8.9 4G LTE offers an 8.9 inch LCD screen with resolution of 1920 x 1200, which works out to a pixel density of 254ppi. That compares with the 264ppi on the fourth-generation Apple iPad, which is considered to have a Retina display. A dual-core 1.5GHz TI OMAP 4470 processor is under the hood with a PowerVR SGX544 GPU. There is 1GB of RAM and 32GB of native storage. The native storage cannot be expanded since there is no microSD slot on board. A 1.3MP front-facing camera is the only camera on the tablet, and Android 4.0 is installed.

Microsoft has altered the specification requirements for Windows 8 tablets clearing a path for OEMs to launch smaller 7- and 8-inch form factor devices, reports ZDNet. Until now, Windows 8-certified devices were required to have a minimum resolution of 1366×768, while the new minimum has been reduced to 1024×768. HTC is among those rumored to be prepping devices on the new form factor, with reports that its 7-inch Windows RT device would also be able to make phone calls.

One issue with the reduction in the minimum resolution for devices running the current version of the Windows 8 or RT is that it won’t support the Snap feature, which allows for two apps to be displayed side by side in the Startscreen mode. This limitation is expected to be lifted when the Windows Blue update arrives. Windows Blue, which will permit windows to be snapped side by side on a 50-50 ratio. Windows 8 limits the Snap function to a 70-30 split that makes it unworkable on smaller displays with the new minimum resolution.

Microsoft says that the specification change will allow “partners exploring designs for certain markets could find greater design flexibility helpful,” hinting strongly that new form factors are on the way. Currently, Windows 8 devices have been limited to form factors typically 10-inches or larger.

The growing popularity of small form factor tablets like Google Nexus 7 and the iPad mini will help OEM looking to increase sales of their Windows 8 devices by tapping into the growth market.

Book retailer Barnes & Noble will be allowing Nook HD and Nook HD+ users to make in-app purchases in the future, according to a company announcement. Working with mobile payment provider Fortumo, developers of apps available through the Nook store will have the option of adding the one-click checkout payments system to their products.

Developers will have access to various tools and resources to implement in-app purchasing, including a dashboard with real-time analytics and purchasing data, with Fortumo handling the processing itself, reports The Next Web. Users will see a single card payment screen when registering to make payments through the system initially, with subsequent in-app purchases being processed after pressing a “pay” button.

The addition of in-app purchases on Nook tablets brings the Barnes & Noble ecosystem in line with those of Amazon and Google. Google Play has had in-app purchasing for a considerable amount of time, while Amazon will be incorporating the new Amazon Coins virtual currency to its Kindle Fire line and the Amazon Appstore in May.

The 7-inch Android 4.1 “Jelly Bean” device will run most Google Play games, while also allowing users to customize their preferred control scheme for each game.

The Archos Gamepad is powered by a 1.6Ghz dual-core Cortex A9 CPU matched with 1GB of RAM. Graphics processing power is provided by a quad-core Mali 400MP GPU, while internal storage is pegged at 8GB. However, a micro-SD card up to 64GB can supplement this. A 1.2-megapixel front facing camera is also included, as is a 2-megapixel-rear camera. The display is a 1024×600 screen, in a 0.3-inch thick enclosure similar in feel to a Playstation Vita.

In addition to providing an integrated mobile gaming platform that combines touch and physical controls with two thumbsticks, four face buttons, a D-pad, and two shoulder buttons, the Archos Gamepad comes with the French company’s Media Center apps. These include music and video apps that also support metadata scraping, auto-subtitles, along with support for multiple codecs including 1080p video decoding.

The device is available at retail and online for $179.

The new XPS 18 all-in-one is both a desktop PC as well as a large Windows 8 tablet that includes a built-in 69Whr battery good for up to 5 hours use. It is also a relatively manageable 4.87 pounds, which Dell says helps to ‘redefine the desktop.’

The XPS 18 comes in a wide range of configurations starting from $900. The entry level option is powered by a low-end Pentium processor, however Intel 3rd-generation Core i3, i5 and i7 options are also available. It centers on an 18.4-inch 1080p 16:9 display with brightness of 350nits and a color gamut of 72 percent. Viewing angles are limited to 89 degrees, however, as it does not use an IPS panel.

Memory is available in either 4GB or 8GB options while storage options vary with hybrid small flash storage for fast booting combined with either spinning hard drives of 320GB or 500GB in capacity. Alternatively, users can opt for a full SSD drive of either 256GB or 512GB. Connectivity includes 2 USB 3.0 ports, 1 USB 2.0 port as well as an 8 in 1 media card reader.

The XPS 18 will go on sale soon and is currently not listed on Dell’s website.

News Corp. has used the SXSWedu conference in Austin, Texas to reveal the Amplify 10-inch Android tablet for students in K-12, reports The New York Times. The device is a product of News Corp’s new education division, which is using the tablet to gain a physical foothold in educational curriculum market. The Amplify tablets will ship with News Corp curriculum materials preinstalled, and will be supplemented by servers to help manage and store student’s data to further sweeten the deal.

News Corp’s Amplify division has partnered with Asus on the new device, which has extensive experience building low-cost tablets including the Google Nexus 7. To keep students engaged with the learning process, the hardware was designed with durability in mind in order to allow students to take their Amplify tablet home with them as well. A special selection of educational games has also been included to facilitate an enjoyable learning experience in the home context.

Following a pilot program where the device was piloted in numerous schools across the country, which allowed Amplify to determine the types of apps, curriculum materials and price that schools were willing to pay. A tablet preinstalled with a range of apps and curriculum materials will sell for $299 plus a two-year support subscription going for $99. This includes training and customer care provided, in many instances, by former classroom teachers. A premium model, the Amplify Plus, includes a 4G cellular modem and data plan for $349.

With educational institutions spending over $3 billion on textbooks in the US, along with a range of government-sponsored initiatives, Amplify is confident that it will eventually begin to turn a profit in the long term.

The device has been aimed at families to ‘gather around’ and enjoy viewing a video or sharing photos together. It incorporates an unspecified dual-core ARM Cortex A9 CPU clocked at 1.6GHz, though it boasts a quad-core Mali 400 MP4 GPU that should deliver strong gaming performance.

Archos claims the Family Pad 2 can playback video for up to 10-hours, but it comes at a considerable weight penalty weighing in at 2.86 pounds (1.3 kg). The SoC has been matched with 1GB of RAM, while onboard storage is limited to 8GB. However, this can be supplemented using its built-in microSD slot, which the company says can support memory cards up to 64GB in capacity.

As with many Archos devices, the Family Pad 2 supports a wide range of file types including H.264, MPEG-4 HD, AVI, MP4, MOV, 3GP, MPG, PS, TS, MKV and FLV.
The Archos Family Pad 2 is retailing for €299 and will be available soon. US and UK pricing has yet to be announced.

Samsung has introduced a new tablet, the Galaxy Note 8.0, at Mobile World Congress. As part of the Note family, the eight-inch device bridges the gap between the 5.5-inch Galaxy Note II and the full-size 10.1-inch tablet, though it appears to serve primarily as a successor to the Galaxy Tab 2 7.0 and the company’s direct competitor to the iPad mini.

The eight-inch display offers 1280×800 resolution, matching its 10.1-inch counterpart and equating to a slightly higher pixel density than the iPad mini. Otherwise the specs generally match the Note II, pairing Android 4.1 Jelly Bean with a 1.6GHz quad-core A9 processor and 2GB of RAM.

Keeping to its Note namesake, the new tablet takes advantage of Samsung’s S Pen stylus to complement finger touch-based input. Wacom technology enables the stylus to control the physical menu buttons, while the Air View feature shows previews of media content, e-mails and appointments as the tip hovers above the display.

The Note 8.0 retains the same OS customizations as its brethren, such as S Note for note taking and Dual View for multi-screen usage. New additions include Flipboard, which unifies news and social networking feeds, and Awesome Note, another note-taking and list-building utility.

Samsung also promotes the Note 8.0 as a phone, however calling functionality will vary by region. The tablet is expected to arrive sometime in the second quarter.

Qualcomm has announced the launch of two new features that can be used by smartphones, tablets, and other devices with its new Snapdragon 800 processor inside. First, Qualcomm introduced QuickCharge 2.0, an improved version of its rapid charging technology that will allow devices to power up 75% faster than devices without QuickCharge.

The technology is built into its Snapdragon 800 processors and is available to handset makers as an integrated circuit or as a separate USB module. According to Qualcomm, it is also working with manufacturers of charging devices to add QuickCharge to wall chargers. These will be able to deliver the equivalent of 60 watts of charge, while only drawing 10 watts from the outlet. Qualcomm doesn’t expect Quick Charge 2.0 to reach smartphones and chargers until early 2014. Qualcomm also today shared information about Voice Activation for Android devices.

Qualcomm calls Voice Activation an “integrated always-on, low-power listening feature.” The feature will allow smartphone owners to say something like “Hey, Snapdragon!” to wake their devices from sleep and jump into a specific app or service.

Voice Activation was designed into Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 800 processors and should be available on devices by the middle of 2013.

If you are a user of a Galaxy Nexus, Nexus 7 or Nexus 10 with a GSM chip, you might be happy to learn that a software update should be arriving on your phone soon. According to multiple users, Android 4.2.2, a minor update to Android Jelly Bean, is being rolled out to all users.

This update has been long awaited by Jelly Bean users due to a Bluetooth issue that was present in the system, making it really difficult to perform intensive tasks using the wireless protocol, such as streaming music to a car.

Some cosmetic changes seem to be present as well. According to the same user, the notification shade drop is slightly slower and the background color of the Settings app uses a slightly lighter shade of grey.

The update seems to be in the process of being rolled out to GSM phones all over the world. There have been reports of it arriving on smartphones in Australia and the United States, making us to believe that this is a worldwide release. Remember that since AT&T and T-Mobile are the only major carriers that use GSM as a standard, users on Verizon and Sprint may have to wait a little bit longer.

The U.S. is the dominant market for Android tablet sales with a 59 percent share of global sales. Localytics says Amazon’s share of the U.S. market has grown to the point where tablet app developers should make sure their apps are available through Amazon’s App Store (the Google Play Store is not available on the Kindle Fire).

“In the meantime, any Android developer with a focus on tablets should be distributing their apps in the Amazon App Store,” said Localytics, which analyzed data from over 500 million unique devices during its research.

“The degree to which Amazon has dominated their most serious geographical market should speak to the future potential, and since Google Play is unavailable on the Kindle Fire family, adding Amazon’s App Store as a distribution channel is important.”

The Barnes and Noble Nook tablet took second place with a 10 percent market share in the U.S., while Samsung Galaxy devices settled for a 9 percent share. The Google Nexus 7, meanwhile, follows behind in fourth with an 8 percent market share.

Microsoft has finally announced a launch date for its Surface Windows 8 Pro tablet. The new offering, which follows the Tegra-based Surface RT variant, is set to arrive on February 9 at a range of US retailers and select outlets in Canada.

The Surface RT was aimed at the tablet market, however the Surface Windows 8 Pro will essentially serve as Microsoft’s own competitor in the ultrabook arena. The device steps up to an Intel Core i5 chip capable of running the full range of Windows 7 and Windows 8 applications.

The Pro model is available in 64GB or 128GB editions, each with a Surface pen for stylus input and a traditional keyboard for use as a notebook. The design shares the same 10.6-inch display size as the Surface RT, but with full 1920×1080 HD resolution.

The Surface Windows 8 Pro tablet starts at $899, in contrast to the $499 entry point for the Surface RT.

The update is being rolled out as an over-the-air download, and it enables a number of user interface and functionality changes. The update also fixes an exploit that renders Exynos 4-based processors vulnerable to malicious apps.

The update to Android 4.1.2 brings a number of new features, as well as modified interface controls for programs such as Gmail. It also gives users access to Google Now, Google’s predictive search feature that also functions as a virtual assistant.

The Exynos 4 vulnerability, identified and confirmed by Samsung in December, is of concern if a user has downloaded a malicious app. The vulnerability, if exploited, would give malware the ability to remotely wipe data, brick a device, or access a user’s data without his knowledge.

Many at CES found the pad to be both powerful enough to run Android games with ease, as well as light and flexible with its configuration. The 7-inch device will run most Android games, while also allowing users to customize their preferred control scheme for each game.

The Gamepad is powered by a 1.6Ghz dual-core Cortex A9 CPU matched with 1GB of RAM. Graphics processing power is provided a capable quad-core Mali 400MP GPU while internal storage is pegged at 8GB. However, a micro-SD card up to 64GB can supplement this. A 1.2-megapixel front facing camera is also included, as is a 2-megapixel-rear camera.

In addition to providing an integrated mobile gaming platform that combines touch and physical controls, the Archos Gamepad comes with the French company’s Media Center apps. These include music and video apps that also support metadata scraping, auto-subtitles, along with support for multiple codecs including 1080p video decoding.

ASUS has rolled out its new 7-inch MeMO Pad for just $150. The device undercuts its own co-branded Google Nexus 7 by around $50, but it comes at a cost, including a reduction in storage to 8GB. However unlike the Nexus 7, which only comes with built-in storage, the MeMO comes with a micro-SD slot and support for up to 32GB of additonal storage space.

To help keep the device at its attractive price-point, the ASUS MeMO is powered by a VIA WM8950 1GHz processor paired 1GB of RAM as well as a Mali-400 GPU. It runs Android 4.1 ‘Jelly Bean’ and centers on a 7-inch 1024×600 display with a relatively low pixel density of 170 pixels per inch. It retains 10-point multitouch, but has a relatively narrow viewing angle of 140-degrees, which doesn’t compare favorably with the 178-degree viewing angle of the IPS display in the Nexus 7.

Wi-Fi is 802.11n, while it also includes a 720p front facing camera 30fps. The in-built battery is a 16Wh Li-polymer 4270mAh that ASUS says is good for 7 hours of battery life. It also adopts a similar rubberized finish to the Nexus 7, but offers it in three colors including white, gray, and pink in a diamond-patterned finish. The MeMO also weighs slightly more than the Nexus 7 at 370 grams against 340 grams.

The MeMO Pad will ship in April.

Panasonic Corporation has announced the development of a new tablet computer that features a 20-inch IPS Alpha LCD panel with more than four times the resolution of Full High Definition, as well as a high precision digital pen. With the target to commercialize the new tablet later this year, Panasonic is gearing itself up to propose new business value this feature-rich device will offer to its customers in a wide range of industries. The tablet is on display at the 2013 International CES in Las Vegas from January 8 to 11.

The company says that the new tablet is designed to create new value for users with a more realistic and intuitive operating environment than paper or a display. They also mention that this tablet embodies the characteristics of printed media that existing personal or tablet computers cannot provide, such as texture rich rendering, natural hand-writing and a light weight and thinness for easy mobility.

The 20-inch LCD panel delivers “4k” resolution (3840 x 2560, 9.83 million pixels), more than twice the horizontal and vertical resolutions of Full HD (1920 x 1080) and has a density of 230 pixels per inch. With a unique aspect ratio of 15:10, it can display an A3-size paper in almost full size, making it ideal to show content such as newspapers and magazines, as well as pictures with the same aspect ratio. Moreover, the pen input, with a resolution as high as the panel itself, enables natural handwriting on the tablet. Weighing 2.4 kg (5.3 lbs) and 10.8 mm (0.4 inch) thick, the tablet is easy to carry.

Panasonic hopes that the 4k tablet offers intuitive operation and ultra-high resolution images with superb color reproduction and a wide viewing angle unique to IPS Alpha panels, bringing an “eco and smart” work style into various business scenes. The tablet is based on Windows 8 operating system, which enables the user to continue to use reliable applications developed for and business documents created on older versions of Windows. Besides offering an intuitiveness other PCs and tablets cannot rival, this innovative tablet will facilitate an environment in which users can develop business solutions in a timely fashion without losing any business chance.

Panasonic has tried to build up trust with customers in a variety of industries by offering its ruggedized Toughbook laptops and Let’s Note mobile notebook PCs, to improve operation efficiency and productivity in harsh outdoor working environments where such IT products were rarely found. Building on these achievements, Panasonic will strive to commercialize the 4k tablet, making it available globally to provide new business values to customers.

The collection includes a pair of hybrid notebook-tablets, an ultrabook with an eight-second booting time, and an all-in-one desktop computer with a touchscreen display.

The H160 Tab-Book has an 11.6-inch display, which hides a QWERTY keyboard that slides out from underneath. Despite the double layers, it measures 16mm (0.6 inches) thick and weighs 1.05kg (2.3 pounds). Though a processor isn’t revealed, it will have a 12.5-hour battery life and connectivity via Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 4.0, HDMI, USB, and a microSD slot. A more powerful model, the Z160, will have higher specifications including an Intel Core i5 processor, but keeps the weight and size of the H160.

Measuring 13.6mm (0.5 inches) and weighing 1.15kg (2.5 pounds), the Z360 Ultrabook uses an Intel Core i5 processor to get its quick boot time. The full HD IPS display can output a brightness of 300 nits. Media can be played back through WiDi wireless streaming, or through its SATA3 SSD storage.

Lastly, the AIO V325 PC will have a 23-inch display with 10-point multitouch. Powered by an Intel Core i5 processor and a GeForce GT640M GPU, it also has an integrated TV tuner, and a picture-in-picture mode to display both live television programming and the desktop simultaneously.
