HighPoint, an industry leading Storage HBA and solutions manufacturer, has launched a new selection of cost-effective hardware RAID HBAs for PC and Mac platforms — the RocketRAID 362x series. The new line of PCI-E RAID cards are ideal for large-scale configurations of 6Gb per second SATA hard drives, and were designed specifically for I/O intensive business and media applications that require data redundancy coupled with consistent transfer rates.

The RocketRAID 362x series HBA’s utilize a dedicated RAID-on-Chip processor and 512MB of DDR3 cache, which offload RAID-related processing from the host system. A comprehensive management suite delivers storage monitoring, maintenance and recovery features to help secure mission-critical data from the risks of hardware failure. The dual Mini-SAS ports deliver 6Gb per second transfer bandwidth for each of the eight device channels.

RocketRAID 362x Series RAID-on-Chip HBAs were designed to work in conjunction with HighPoint’s Rocket EJ340 SATA Expander Modules. Rocket EJ340 Expander Modules quadruple the storage capability of each Mini-SAS port, and enable RocketRAID 362x HBAs to expand from 8 up to 32 hard drives, and support large-scale hardware RAID 5 and 6 storage configurations.

RocketRAID 3600 HBAs and accessories are available immediately from HighPoint’s network of distribution and Retail channels. The RocketRaid 3620 retail for $429, with the 3622 coming it at $579. The RocketEJ3440 SATA expander retails for $119.

The drive, aimed at thin and light systems, slimmer notebooks, as well as compatibility with the industry-standard 9.5 mm drive slots of mainstream notebooks, is shipping in capacities from 320 GB to 1TB in the new 7mm height.

The new WD Blue drive motor shaft is secured at both ends to compensate for system-induced vibration and stabilize platters for accurate tracking during read and write operations. Dual Stage Actuators improve positional accuracy over the data track. The primary actuator provides coarse displacement using conventional electromagnetic actuator principles. The secondary actuator uses piezoelectric motion to fine tune the head positioning. WD’s SecurePark parks the recording heads off the disk surface during spin up, spin down, and when the drive is off, enhancing long-term reliability.

A two-year limited warranty covers the new drive. The 1TB WD Blue 7 mm 2.5-inch mobile hard drive model WD10SPCXX retails for $139.

The revised version of the compact four-in-one device is now available with CD and DVD read-only and writable drives, adding to the already-available Blu-ray versions customers can purchase.

The rest of the MiniStack Max remains the same as before. Taking up the same physical space as a Mac Mini and designed to stack with it, the MiniStack Max can hold up to 4TB of data on its 7200rpm internal hard disk, can read SD cards, and can also act as a USB powered hub. Connection to the PC or Mac is done over USB 3.0, USB 2.0, Firewire 800, Firewire 400, and eSATA, though there is still not an option to connect over Thunderbolt.

Available as a bare unit without storage for $150, the MiniStack Max starts from $230 including a DVD writer and 500GB of storage, going up to $500 for the 4TB version. Versions able to read Blu-ray discs range from $360 to $530, and with a Blu-ray writer ranges from $300 to $570.

Western Digital has revealed it is working with SanDisk for its 5mm (0.2-inches) thick solid state hybrid drives (SSHD) that it revealed last month. The WD Black SSHD storage, aimed at notebook manufacturers aiming to create thinner devices, uses SanDisk’s flash memory technology for the solid-state portion, which works alongside the WD-created hard disk.

Using the SanDisk iSSD flash storage device, which is said to be suitable for the drive thanks to being compact, low-powered, and claimed high performance and reliability, the 2.5-inch drive is able to use the iSSD as a caching drive for the main 500GB WD storage, allowing for potentially faster data transfer speeds due to reduced need to seek on the spinning platters.

It has previously been revealed that the new drive design reduces weight compared to conventional drives by up to 36 percent, and is said to be quieter and shockproof to 1000G. Due to its thin form, the drive uses a new edge connector that combines the data connection and power feed.

Currently, WD is shipping 5mm WD Black SSHD storage to OEMs, along with 7mm and 9.5mm models. Availability of the 5mm drives to end users and prices have yet to be revealed.

The Overdrive 3.0 units, which will work with many machines out there, seemed aimed at MacBook Air and Ultrabook users who want a small professional package which makes it is fast and easy to add storage to their computer.

The small, lightweight laser etched stainless steel enclosure is about the size of iPhone 4. Wrapped around each drive is an integrated USB 3.0 “Super-Speed” cable – So you never need to go looking for a cable when you need to use the drive. The drive works with USB 2.0 too.

The Overdrive 3.0 does not require an external power supply. The USB drive is rated at 250/150MB/s read/write speeds - 4x as fast as a traditional external hard drive. Plus the Overdrive 3.0′s includes a built in blue LED data transfer indicator and soft travel pouch.

“These products are already in-use with photographers, recording engineers and musicians and are Monster Digital’s answer to the need for reliability, speed, and convenience for the professional,”" says Monster Digital CEO Jay Tandon.

Configured to work with either PC or Mac, the drives are ready to go to work straight out of the box. All Overdrive 3.0′s include a 3-year warranty

The Overdrive 3.0 line of high-speed, solid state drive are available in four storage capacities of 128GB, 256GB, 512GB and 1TB for the suggested retail prices of $179.99, $299.99, $599.99, $1399.99 respectively.

Western Digital has started shipping its first hard drives and solid state hybrid drives (SSHD) that measure 5mm (0.2-inches) thick. The new WD Blue and WD Black 2.5-inch drives are made to allow for even thinner notebook and ultrabook designs, while still providing a sizable amount of storage for the end user.

Compared to standard 9.5mm-thick drives, the new slimmer design is said to reduce weight by up to 36-percent, along with reduced noise, and non-operation shock protection rated at 400G and 1000G for the Blue and Black respectively. In order to accomplish the thin design, WD had to use a new edge connector that combines the data connection with the power feed. Despite its small size, WD still had enough room to use dual stage actuators, which are used to improve the accuracy of writing and reading data tracks.

The WD Blue 5mm is on sale at $89 for a 500 GB drive, but only to OEMs and industrial distributors at present. Versions of the WD Black 5mm SSHD are shipping to PC manufacturers, though capacities and costs were not revealed.

Sonnet has announced the Echo Express III-D desktop and Echo Express III-R rackmount Thunderbolt-to-PCI Express Expansion Chassis, the newest members of the company’s Echo family of Thunderbolt expansion chassis for PCI-E cards. Featuring three PCI-E slots, a 300W power supply, and 75W auxiliary power connector, both new devices enable the use of a wide variety of high-performance PCI Express cards originally designed for use in desktop computers, now available to use with any OS X computer with a Thunderbolt port.

Both the Echo Express III-D desktop and Echo Express III-R rackmount chassis feature dual Thunderbolt ports to support daisy-chaining of devices, and are designed for users connecting up to three PCIe cards to their computer. Each new chassis supports three full-length, full-height, single-width PCIe 2.0 cards with one x16 and two x8 PCIe slots. The III-D is small enough to fit in many travel bags. The III-R mounts in a 2U tall (3.5-inch) rack space, and its enclosure is just 15.75 inches deep, suitable for use in a wide range of mobile racks, carts, and rack bags as well as conventional racks.

Utilizing the optional Echo Express III-R Mobile Rack Kit, users can install two 5.25-inch form factor mobile rack devices in the III-R’s enclosure. The Mobile Rack Kit easily installs into the Echo chassis’ enclosure and houses one full-height (3.2-inch) or two half-height (1.6-inch) mobile rack devices up to eight inches deep. A separate 80W power supply inside the Mobile Rack Kit powers the installed devices. Each new Echo chassis integrates a universal 300W power supply and includes a 75W PCI-E power connector for cards that require supplementary power. Larger, slower-spinning fans enable the Echo Express III-D and III-R to conserve energy by powering on and off with the computer to which they are attached.

The ECHO-EXP3F-D Echo Express III-D has a suggested retail price of $979. The ECHO-EXP3F-R Echo Express III-R retails for $1,199. The ECHO-EXP3F-R-MR Echo Express III-R Mobile Rack Kit has a suggested retail price of $150. All are expected to be available in August 2013.

With a booth at the National Association of Broadcasters expo this week, Intel notes that its next-generation Thunderbolt controller, codenamed Falcon Ridge, has the bandwidth to support 4K video file transfers while simultaneously driving a 4K display.

The current Thunderbolt hardware supports 10 Gbps transfer rates in both directions, however some uncompressed 4K formats would not leave enough room to handle the display signal.

The company also introduced Redwood Ridge Thunderbolt controllers for its fourth-generation Core-series processors, adding DisplayPort 1.2 capabilities, improved power management, smaller component size and reduced costs. Existing equipment will also be able to benefit from thinner electrical cables.

The Falcon Ridge technology is expected to ship before the end of the year, with full implementation in 2014. The next-generation tech will be backwards compatible, using the same cables as the current tech, while the thinner cables are “coming soon.”

DRAM and NAND flash memory manufacturer Adata today announced the release of thinner and lighter versions of its solid state drives. With a thickness of just 7mm, the new SSD models are suitable for slim-design laptop and ultrabook computers, as well as certain embedded industrial applications.

The standard thickness for 2.5-inch form factor hard-disk drives is 9.5mm. The market trend towards thinner and lighter notebook computers has influenced the design requirements for all components, especially hard drives. ADATA’s 7mm SSDs have reduced thickness with no loss of speed, capacity, or durability. The new SSDs will come with 2.5mm plastic trays so that they can still be used with existing 9.5mm high drive slots.

No pricing difference between the 9.5mm and 7mm drives has been announced. The slimmer drives are expected to hit the retail channel before the summer.

Models affected by the move are the Momentus 7200.4, 7200.2, Momentus Thin 7200, and Momentus XT. The company cites the rise of SSDs as the reason for the production stop.

Mobile hard disk drives with 7200rpm spindle speed offer a bit higher performance compared to hard drives with 5400rpm, but are still dramatically slower than various solid-state hybrid drives or solid-state drives (SSDs).

Seagate doesn’t have a SSD product line at this time, so Seagate will positions solid-state hybrid for performance and capacity demanding end-users. To further stimulate customers to utilize SSHDs, the company will cease building hard drives with 7200rpm spindle-speed in 2.5” form-factor.

Addonics Technologies today announced the Addonics Cipher RAID Rack and the Cipher RAID Tower, two RAID Storage solutions with AES 256-bit hardware encryption for high capacity storage. Both products are tailored for securing large volumes of sensitive information, data achieving or video recording. Both units are Mac or PC compatible, and connect to systems via a single eSATA or USB cable to a USB 3.0 or 2.0 port.

Both Cipher RAID storage solutions come integrated with simple to use AES 256-bit full disk hardware encryption. The encryption and description are activated by a insertion of a physical cipher key, similar to unlocking a door with a key. Data is encrypted and decrypted on all drives simultaneously on the fly, totally transparent to the user.

The hard drives enclosed inside both units can be configured to form a single RAID volume or to appear as individual drives to the system. Configuration is set via DIP switches accessible from the back of the device. Drives are added or removed from the storage chassis with no special drive tray or tools. By attaching the optional Addonics NAS 4.0 adapter, either storage solutions instantly becomes secured NAS storage.

The 1U Cipher Rack retails for $389, and the Cipher RAID tower is $399. Both are available at the Addonics website or at retail establishments now.

The two drives, the SC199 for industry and the TC166 for desktop computers, does away with the previous high-capacity SSD requirement of a PCI Express card-based interface, as seen in Super Talent drives in 2009.

Both drives measure 9.5mm (0.4 inches) thick and have flash management technologies such as SMART, advanced power management, and error checking algorithms. Optional features such as fast erasing, hardware-based encryption, conformal coating, and military secure erase methods. Though read and write speeds were not made available, others in the company’s high-capacity 2.5-inch SSD range seem to have a maximum speed of 270MB per second, which could carry over to these newer drives.

The two drives appear to be only available to OEMs and companies requiring the drives for industrial equipment at present, though a consumer-grade version could still ship in the future. Pricing details have also not been released, though it is confirmed they are already in mass production.

The Kingston DataTraveler has read/write speeds of up to 240MB/s and 160MB/s respectively. With a USB 2.0 connection on your computer, you will only achieve speeds of up to 30MB/s.

The price for the 1TB model has not been announced, but judging by the tag on its half-capacity sibling, it won?t be too affordable either. A comparable 512GB Kingston model costs a whopping $1750, which is $3.41 per GB, compared to $1.17 per GB for an average 128GB drive.

Kingston also announced two DataTraveler Ultimate USB 3.0 G3 drives in 32GB and 64GB capacities, with read speeds of 150MB/s and 70MB/s for writing data. The drives are also backward compatible with USB 2.0 with speed limitation, and pricing and availability hasn’t been announced.

Storage drive provider Drobo today announced the Drobo 5N, the latest in the new lineup of high-performance storage systems. The Drobo 5N, a network-attached storage (NAS) device, provides increased performance and data protection enhancements for personal and professional users who want a file sharing and backup experience over a local area network.

Like all Drobo storage arrays, the Drobo 5N networked storage is designed for easy set up. The Drobo 5N supports both Mac and Windows operating systems and can be used in a wide variety of use cases, such as centralized backup for multiple systems on the network, including native support for Apple Time Machine on Mac OS computers, and data sharing for both Windows and Mac OS systems across the network.

The new Drobo device holds five storage bays, each of which can hold one standard 3.5 inch SATA hard disk drive or solid state drive, plus one mSATA solid state drive in the Drobo Accelerator Bay for increased performance. Maximum capacity of the unit is 20TB when configured with 4 TB drives, resulting in 16TB of protected storage in a RAID-5 configuration. One Gigabit Ethernet port provides connectivity to a local area network.

Pricing for a no-drive enclosure starts at $599, and runs up to $1600 for a 15TB configuration. The new Drobo 5N is now available from the Drobo store and resellers worldwide.
