Zagg has debuted a pair of new iPad mini Bluetooth keyboard accessories at CTIA Las Vegas. The ZaggKeys Cover for the iPad mini, pictured, is the latest in its iPad line of popular keyboard covers. According to the company, it is the thinnest Bluetooth keyboard accessory for the iPad mini available, measuring just 6.3mm (0.25-inch) thick. It also incorporates backlit keys with seven color options and three lighting levels.

The hinge on the ZaggKeys Cover allows users to position an iPad mini at multiple angles, as well as reverse the iPad mini for one-piece reading or for viewing movies and playing games. The inbuilt battery keeps the cover powered for up to three months of regular use before it needs to be recharged. It will be available in black and silver options for $100.

The ZaggKeys Folio is also aiming for the title of the thinnest folio keyboard cover available, at 6.9mm (0.27 inches) thickness. Like the ZaggKeys Cover, the Folio’s hinge also allows an iPad mini to be positioned in a wide range of angles and incorporates the same keyboard backlighting. Its inbuilt battery is also good for three months on a charge while it too will retail for $100 and will be available in black and white, with other colors arriving by fall.

Logitech has introduced its new FabricSkin Keyboard Folio for the Apple iPad. The new device is compatible with the iPad 2as well as third and fourth generation iPads. The device takes some design cues from the Microsoft Surface TouchCover, by integrating a super low profile keyboard into the cover of Folio.

As the promo video below highlights, Logitech focused on using colors, fabric textures and smart design, while it is also thinner and lighter than some of the company’s other Folio Keyboard covers for the iPad. Magnets in the covers hold the iPad in either one of two positions; one with the iPad placed in an upright position that is best for typing, while the other lays the iPad flat with the keyboard hidden for browsing the web or watching movies.

As with a number of Logitech’s iPad accessories, the FabricSkin Keyboard works with the magnets in the iPad’s frame, allowing the cover to automatically wake an iPad when lifting the cover, or putting it to sleep when closing it again. As an added bonus, the keyboard is also splash resistant. Logitech has also ensured that users can easily recharge the FabricSkin over a microUSB port.

The Logitech FabricSkin Keyboard Folio is up for pre-order now at $150, and is available in a range of colors including red, white, black, blue and yellow.

Orb Audio announced today the launch of an all-new Mini-T, the company’s micro-sized Class T amplifier designed for use with computers, televisions, iPods and most mobile devices. The new Mini-T is even smaller than the original Mini-T, and features a new glossy black cabinet, improved signal path design, and the first dedicated subwoofer output available in the device’s class.

The new Mini-T allows consumers to use home speakers instead of resorting to cheaply designed self-powered speakers. The device can be paired with speakers already found in the consumer’s home, or can also be combined with Orb Audio’s Mod1 and Mod2 speakers.

The amplifier delivers 15W per channel, at a 0.04 percent distortion. Efficiency hits 88 percent, with a dynamic range of 102dB.

Mini-T version 2 amplifiers are available as a standalone product for $69. The Mini-T can also be purchased in a package with two Orb Mod1 speakers for $299.

Square has announced the Business in a Box, a new hardware option for retailers. The system includes a cash drawer, a Square card reader, and a WindFall iPad stand, meant to hold an iPad running the Square Register app.

Square’s goal is to have the combination be able to handle all major POS tasks, including creating custom inventories and running analytics.

However right now there is one major pieces missing – hardcopy receipts. By default, receipts must be emailed to customers; adding a receipt printer costs another $300.

At 7mm (0.28″) thick, the FastFit keyboard cover is thinner than the iPad mini itself.

The keyboard also features Belkin’s TruType keyboard, which provides spaced keys for fast and accurate typing. As opposed to a membrane keyboard, each key has a spring mechanism that provides tactile feedback when struck, helping touch typists maintain speed.

The case’s Bluetooth 3.0 connection and 200mAh battery ensure wireless typing with long battery life. The FastFit can last for up to 155 hours of active use without needing a charge. In addition, FastFit’s cover wakes the iPad when opened, and puts it to sleep when the cover is closed.

The FastFit Bluetooth Wireless Keyboard Case for iPad Mini will sell for $80 and will be available for pre-order soon on Belkin.com. No announcement about retail availability has been made.

Logitech has debuted its Ultrathin Keyboard Cover for the iPad mini. Although designed for the smaller iPad mini, Logitech says that it the keyboard uses full size keys. The cover keeps its weight down, but retains protective strength by utilizing an aluminum panel on its rear.

“Think of it as the other half of your iPad mini,” said Alexis Richard, Logitech’s director of brand development in the video below. “Its clever seven-inch design fits perfectly with the iPad mini while offering full-size keys for easy typing, saving your screen space for content.”

While not a full-size keyboard, it does include function shortcut keys for often used commands such as copy and paste. The keyboard cover also automatically wakes an iPad mini when it is opened and switches to standby when closed. Logitech claims the in-built rechargeable battery has three months of use on a full charge.

The Logitech Keyboard Cover for the iPad mini will be available in early February for $80.

The information stems from sources at Taiwanese Apple suppliers, who say that AU Optronics is piloting production of the new tablet. The hardware is expected to use a 2048×1536 display resolution, the same as the fourth-generation 9.7-inch iPad, despite having to compress that detail onto a 7.9-inch screen.

324ppi would give the Mini Apple’s second-sharpest display, below only the 326ppi of the iPhone 5. For comparison, the 9.7-inch iPad is rated at 264ppi, while the 13-inch Retina MacBook Pro has 227.

The current Mini uses a 1024×768 display, at just 163ppi; that makes its screen inferior to the Nexus 7, which has a 7-inch 1280×800 screen with 216ppi.

A 128GB version of the fourth-generation iPad will go on sale February 5th, Apple has announced. The tablet will cost $799 in a Wi-Fi-only version, or $929 when paired with 3G/4G cellular. Features will otherwise stay identical to other fourth-gen models, including an A6X processor; iOS 6.1 should come preinstalled.

The addition addresses an occasional complaint about the iPad, which is that although it often functions like a computer, it lacks the storage capacity of something like a Mac. 128GB is the same amount of default storage in a Retina MacBook Pro, and in fact twice the amount that comes with the cheapest MacBook Air. The change may fuel speculation that Apple is planning to drop 16GB iPads, making 32GB the smallest capacity.

The update represents a major redesign, for instance including a native iPad interface. New categories have also been introduced, such as Explore Recipes, which lets people grab recipes from websites and save them into the new My Cookbook tab, which also incorporates recipes pulled from the regular Evernote app.

Another addition is the Restaurants tab, which displays lists and maps for local businesses. Users can bookmark restaurants they want to visit, and see the locations of earlier visits. My Meals is used to record past food experiences, including photos; here cuisines can be added to meals, or assigned automatically when picking a recommended place. Meals can be shared via email, Facebook, Twitter, or direct link.

Evernote has lastly tweaked sync functions. A Sync Now button forces Food to sync, while a “Sync on Wi-Fi only” option prevents the app from wasting cellular bandwidth.

Food is a free download, and requires iOS 6 or later.

Blue Microphones has unveiled the first studio microphone for both Apple’s 30-pin iOS dock connector and USB — the Spark Digital. The new digital version of the microphone features the same studio-grade condenser capsule and hand-selected components as the original, delivering high-fidelity recording and consistent performance.

The microphone also features studio controls directly on the microphone including volume, gain control, and instant mute. In addition, Spark Digital is the only iPad microphone to offer a zero-latency headphone out for direct monitoring, critical for eliminating distracting delay or for creating professional multi-track recordings where new tracks need to be synced with existing tracks.

Spark Digital also employs a feature found only on the original Spark: the Focus control, providing two different sonic options in one mic. In the off position, the microphone captures audio with enhanced low frequency sensitivity for recordings with greater impact and definition, and ‘Focus On’ captures greater clarity and detail for a tighter, more focused sound.

A custom angle-adjustable desk stand with built-in shock mount protects against disruptive rumblings and vibrations from a desktop surface and allows users to quickly position the microphone. Spark Digital is directly compatible with the iPad, iPad 2, iPad third generation, iPhone 4, iPhone 4S and is instantly recognized for use with any recording app, in addition to driverless connection via USB on both PC and Mac.

The Spark Digital microphone is now available in-store and online for $200 at Apple’s retail store, Best Buy, and will be arriving soon at Guitar Center, Amazon and additional consumer electronics and pro audio retailers worldwide.

Five new products, expected to be available in January, will offer charge and sync cables, dual-USB and very compact USB car and home chargers for users with Lightning-equipped products. Each comes with a Lightning-to-USB charge and sync cable included that is compatible with most other USB-based chargers as well. All of the new offerings work with the iPhone, iPods and iPad mini.

The DualPin Combo is a car charger that can charge up to two iPods, iPad minis or iPhone 5 units thanks to its two USB ports. It features a swivelling plug base to allow flexible placement. The RockWall Combo is a similar device used for wall charging as well as syncing for all the new Apple devices.

The company’s MobiSeal line of existing chargers expands to include the MobiSeal Combo micro-sized single-USB car charger and MobiSeal Deluxe Combo, the latter of which is an adaptable single-USB port wall or car charger. Both feature a compact design to fit most power-socket locations and indicate when they are done charging with a blue LED light.

Pricing on the various accessories range from $20 to $65, but individual prices have not yet been announced. The Lightning cables and adapters will be available from iLuv and various retail outlets starting early next year.

Temperature, humidity, air pressure, sound levels, and carbon dioxide concentration are monitored by the pair of probes and transmitted over Wi-Fi to the app.

In addition to receiving real-time notifications on air quality and weather conditions, purchasers have access to a free lifetime online account that stores all the accumulated data from the probes. With this device Netatmo aims to create the largest weather and air quality monitoring network ever built.

The Urban Weather Station includes a seven-day forecast and a indicator for reading carbon dioxide levels. The probe also monitors the average sound level to monitor for noise pollution, as well as atmospheric pressure and temperature.

Netatmo’s Urban Weather Station probes are available for $179 online. The Netatmo app is available for free in the App Store.

The Virtual Keyboard will project a full-size QWERTY keyboard onto a surface when pocket-space is an issue, and the HDMI Pocket Projector is a battery-operated HD display.

Small enough to fit on a keychain, the Virtual Keyboard can connect to portable devices using Bluetooth, and projects a 72-key keyboard using its built-in laser. The Lithium-ion battery is claimed to last more than two hours, and is rechargable by micro USB.

The HDMI Pocket Projector uses an 85-lumen LED light source to display a 1080p image up to 60-inches in size. Two one-watt speakers plays the accompanying audio, both through the HDMI connection and a standard headphone socket. The 3500mAh battery lasts for two hours, and also allows for 5V USB charging of accompanying devices.

The projector will be on sale from July 1 for $300, and the Virtual Keyboard for $100 in August.

The upgrade mainly addresses compatibility with the third-generation iPad, while still supporting the iPad 2. It also however uses a new vertical stand system, said to allow landscape viewing at multiple angles.

The CARA uses a thin folio design, employing polycarbonate in both the back shell and the front lid. The lid sports a raised honeycomb pattern with a polished finish; embedded magnets activate an iPad’s sleep/wake functions, and a latch keeps the case shut. The back has openings for the camera, rotation switch, and all ports, but covers the volume and power buttons while still allowing their use.

The CARA is available in red, white, or black colors, and costs $50. Each package includes a screen protector, a microfiber cloth, and plugs for the headphone jack and dock connector.

The device is touted as an all-in-one solution that offers an ultrathin screen protector and built-in keyboard. The cover utilises aluminium in its construction to help keep weight down and includes a stand to hold the iPad at a suitable angle for typing over a Bluetooth connection.

The Logitech Ultrathin Keyboard Cover, like Apple’s Smart Cover, uses the iPad’s built-in magnets to attach the cover with its magnetic clip. It also has an instant on/off function automatically waking the iPad from sleep when the cover is opened and turns the display off when closed.

The Logitech Ultrathin Keyboard Cover is available now for $100 throughout the US and Europe.

Panasonic has unveiled a new external battery pack. The flagship QE-QL301 can share its maximum 10,260mAh of power between two USB devices at once. At four times the power of even a well-equipped smartphone, it has both the power to give meaningful extra battery life to two devices, including to tablets like the iPad.

A full seven chargers will be part of the lineup, although not all will have the same features. Twin USB ports will be available on smaller 1,430mAh (QL102), 2,700mAh (QL101), and 5,400mAh (QL201) packs; a 1,900mAh QV201 stick relies only on USB to charge and can’t be powered up at the same time. Three wireless charging models will have just one USB port, but the 2,700mAh (PL102), 5,400mAh (PL202), and PL301 (8,100mAh) batteries will support Qi wireless power through an optional charging pad for those devices that have a suitable contact point or adapter.

Japan gets the battery packs first on May 28. It’s not known if the range will appear in the US, although their universal nature will allow them to ship largely unchanged for any international release.

Eventbrite has adapted the basic concept of mobile payment reading hardware to event formula with new hardware for At The Door. The platform lets those with a new card reader for the iPad to take credit card payments for concerts, plays, and other events on the spot. While familiar, an optional printer from Star lets the event host print tickets on the spot if they have a power source and an Ethernet link.

Event operators can track the revenue of different ticket tiers from within the app. Again similar to Square and its parallels, Eventbrite is relying on a per-payment cut to make its profit, but is using this as a possible advantage over traditionally steep fees. Rather than apply a service charge, it’s at least temporarily limiting its share to a flat three percent of each sale.

Transactions should be secure, since all the encryption for credit cards is handled through the Dock Connector-based reader and not in the app or the network.

Each reader costs $10 but includes a matching credit to an Eventbrite account. No mention has been made of an Android port. The printer costs $298.
