TomTom has updated one range of its dedicated GPS devices, and revealed a new line of GPS sports watches. The TomTom GO adds a new interactive map as well as more information for drivers, while the TomTom Runner and Multi-Sport marks a departure by the company from its previous Nike-branded efforts.

TomTom Go now consists of a simplified range of devices, with a choice of 4.3-inch, 5-inch, and 6-inch models. An interactive map feature along with 3D Maps allows for zooming in and selecting places to explore on the map itself, with a tap on the map providing a route instantly. Lifetime updates for TomTom Traffic will provide details of where delays start, with users able to get updates by choosing between two device options: devices that connect via Bluetooth to a smartphone and uses a data plan, or an always-connected device with no further data charges. For the life of the device, drivers can download at least four full updates of the map to the GPS every year, while customers will also receive a three-month trial of a speed camera warning system.

The new sports watches provide a number of graphical training modes to use on the display. A race mode will allow the user to compete against a previous or best time over a route, a goal mode will keep counting down until the wearer reaches a distance, time, or calorie usage target, and the “Zone” mode will set a pace or heart rate as a target to stay above, and provides a graph of that metric over time. Lasting up to ten hours on a single charge, the Runner and Multi-Sport watches measure 11.5mm (0.45 inches) thick, with the Multi-Sport also providing a swimming motion sensor, an optional altimeter, and a cadence sensor used for cycling.

While prices for the TomTom Go, Runner, and Multi-Sport have yet to be provided, the sports watches will ship this Summer.

By simply adding one line of code, developers of mobile websites or of apps with local content will have a free and easy way to integrate full GPS turn-by-turn directions into their services, creating a more seamless user experience and increasing user engagement and time spent within their applications.

Similar to TeleNav’s GPS navigation application, the HTML5 navigation service will include full-color moving maps, audio directions, and automatic rerouting if the driver misses a turn. TeleNav’s HTML5 navigation service will be free for both developers and consumers and will support all major mobile platforms.

“This is an enormous amount of added value for any mobile, location-based website or app focused on travel, shopping, local search, deals and more,” said Sal Dhanani, co-founder and vice president of products for TeleNav. “With one line of code, you can give your customers one-click access to premium, voice-guided turn-by-turn directions to any location, including hotels, restaurants, merchants or deal locations. Customers never need to leave your app.”

TeleNav would like to partner with select developers to test the service. Interested mobile website publishers and app developers can apply for early access by visiting TeleNav’s website at www.telenav.com/developer/HTML5.

A bike mount and cradle for the unit are included, as is an ANT+ sensor that mounts to the rear wheel and wirelessly sends speed and cadence information to the unit. A calorie counter is built inside as well. When off official paths, a basic off-road GPS waypoint system keeps users aware of their location so they can feel safe about going off-road.

The PotterNavi will cost 40,000 Yen (about $526) in Japan when it launches in February. The device isn’t likely to come to North America.

It joins a range of devices now featuring the Clarkson’s unique take on driving (audio embedded below) including the PS3’s Gran Turismo 5 and the Xbox 360’s Forza Motorsport 4.

The model is a variant of Tom Tom’s GO live 1535 M navigation unit, but with a Top Gear twist. In addition to Clark’s inimitable turn-by-turn guidance, the device comes with a range of preinstalled Top Gear-themed content. Among these are special startup and shutdown screens and Top Gear-styled icons. Also getting the Top Gear treatment are points-of-interest (POIs).

However, if uses happen to get tired of Clarkson’s commentary, the Tom Tom Top Gear Edition also comes with a ‘Stig Mode.’ As fans of Top Gear will know, The Stig (Top Gear’s test driver) does not speak during filmed episodes. So, instead of hearing Clarkson, users also have the option of viewing the display for directions in silence if they choose.

The Tom Tom Top Gear Edition is retailing for $270.

Garmin has brought out two new tracking devices aimed at cyclists. The Edge 200 Cycling GPS tracks basic information including tracks time, distance, speed, location and calories burned. The Vector captures more sophisticated information about the cyclist’s performance in real time.

The Edge 200 snaps onto a holder mounted on the handlebar. It incorporates a 1.2-inch by 1.4-inch 128×160 pixel display. The information captured can be uploaded via a USB cable to a computer after a ride where it is mapped and shared. The Edge stores up to 130 hours of information.

The Vector requires that the biker replace their normal pedals with a special pair that house a special sensor. That sensor monitors advanced power data including cadence, force exerted by each pedal stroke, The information is then transmitted wirelessly to either a handle bar mounted monitor such as an Edge 800, or to an ANT+ enabled head unit

The Edge 200 is priced at $150. It will be available during the third-quarter of this year. The Vector, carrying a price tag of $1,500, will begin shipping in March 2012.

Garmin has announced the redesigned and upgraded eTrex handheld GPS device – evolving from one of the world’s most popular handhelds, with millions sold. This entry level option has been given enhanced ergonomics, an improved interface, paperless geocaching and in certain models, a 65k color screen with expanded mapping capabilities. These new additions – along with up to 25 hours of battery life – make the new eTrex more versatile and user-friendly, while maintaining its storied toughness and durability. The eTrex was announced in preparation for the Teva Mountain Games in Vail, CO, where it will be prominently displayed at the Garmin booth June 3-5.

Go Green, Go Paperless: Take this powerful pocket-size GPS device with you on your next geocaching adventure and leave the paper print-outs at home. The new eTrex series supports geocaching GPX files for downloading geocache locations and details straight to the unit using its high-speed USB connection. The eTrex stores and displays key information, including location, terrain, difficulty, hints and descriptions, which means no more manually entering coordinates and those paper print outs! To start paperless geocaching, simply upload the GPX file to your unit and start hunting for caches. Caches can be downloaded from OpenCaching.com, a completely free online community for creating, sharing and finding geocaches around the world.

Save Green: For the budget savvy consumer looking for a basic GPS device, Garmin offers eTrex 10. This basic handheld GPS is armed with a sunlight-readable monochrome display and a worldwide basemap making it easier than ever to know where you are and where you are headed next. eTrex 10 is the perfect device for families looking to get into the growing community of geocaching, yet is robust enough for an avid hunter to mark his or her favorite spots with. To see eTrex in action visit, www.garmin.com/eTrex

See The Way: View a wide array of detailed topographic, marine, and road maps on eTrex 20 and 30, thanks to the enhanced 2.2 inch 65k color, sunlight readable display. Sold separately, those maps include TOPO U.S. 24K to hit the trail, BlueChart g2 preloaded cards for a great day on the water or City Navigator maps for turn-by-turn routing on roads. Download BaseCamp, a free utility that allows users to plan and manage trips, routes, tracks, and waypoints and transfer them between the computer and eTrex. BaseCamp lets users view both 24K and 100K topo maps in 2D or 3D renderings. Another convenient window depicts the elevation profile currently displayed. And with Track Draw, users can trace a fluid track and get an immediate elevation profile to determine the difficulty of their hike or geocaching adventure.

Stay on Course: eTrex 30 takes all the features mentioned and adds a built-in 3-axis tilt-compensated electronic compass, which shows your heading even when you’re standing still, without holding it level. Also added is a barometric altimeter which tracks changes in pressure to pinpoint your precise altitude and wireless unit-to-unit data transfer with compatible devices. This top of the line offering within the new eTrex series was designed for the outdoor enthusiasts who want easy access to the most amount of information in small compact product.

Price and Availability

The new eTrex devices are expected to be available in the third quarter of 2011. The eTrex 10 and 20 have a suggested retail price of $119.99 and $199.99, respectively. The eTrex 30 has a suggested retail price of $299.99.

It has a barometric altimeter for elevation profiling and ability to profile the route ahead using included worldwide elevation model. The included 3-axis compass gives it a heading while standing still or not held level.

“Montana was designed with the ‘get dirty, go hard then go home crowd’ in mind, who are always after adventure,” said Dan Bartel, Garmin’s vice president of worldwide sales. “We now have one device to fulfill all of your rugged GPS needs. From navigating waterways in your boat and traversing the back country in your ATV, to hiking the Austrian Alps and even receiving spoken turn-by-turn directions on the way to the grocery store, Montana has the versatility and mapping compatibility to do what you need it to.”

Anywhere and Everywhere

With Montana’s new ruggedized design there is no longer a need to hold back, regardless of your adventure. Montana is fully waterproof and capable of withstanding all the mud and grit you can throw at it, even when connected to its optional powered mount. Use the power mount capability and City Navigator for spoken, turn-by-turn driving directions, or the rugged mount for your motorcycle or ATV. If you are on foot, simply plug headphones into Montana’s 3.5mm audio jack to hear the spoken prompts.

Montana has you covered with support for Garmin’s wide array of detailed topographic, marine, and road maps. Montana also supports BirdsEye Satellite Imagery (subscription required), that lets you download satellite images to your device and integrate them with your maps. In addition, Montana is compatible with Custom Maps, free software that transforms paper and electronic maps into downloadable maps for your device.

Stay Powered

Montana offers two battery options to keep your device powered during remote hunting trips or other outdoor adventures. When you have a chance to rest and recharge each night, a thin, light weight lithium ion battery pack, lasting up to 16 hours, comes in the box. For those trips where you’re off the grid, Montana also works on three AA batteries, giving users an additional 22 hours of use without being weighted down.

Go Paperless

Montana supports geocaching GPX files for downloading geocaches and details straight to the unit. Montana stores and displays key information, including location, terrain, difficulty, hints and descriptions, which means no more manually entering coordinates and paper print outs! Simply upload the GPX file to your unit and start hunting for caches. Caches can be downloaded from OpenCaching.com, a completely free online community for creating, sharing and finding geocaches around the world.

While you are out searching for your next cache or trekking through untouched wilderness, capture locations and memories with Montana’s 5-megapixel digital camera. Each photo is automatically geotagged with the location of where it was taken, allowing you to navigate back to that exact spot in the future. Snap and view pictures in landscape or portrait orientation. For more storage, insert a microSD card; you can even view pictures from other devices on microSD with Montana’s picture viewer.

TomTom says this feature will understand many commands spoken in different ways, such as “drive to an address,” “go to an address” or “navigate to an address.” How the two families differ is in screen, which on the 2435s is a typical 4.3-inch screen where the 2535 units get a five-inch screen. Both variants have Bluetooth support, but the smaller devices alone are said to get 4GB of built-in memory.

Each will have models with lifetime map updates (designated with an M suffix), lifetime traffic updates (T) and both (TM). Standalones include the 2535TM World Traveler Edition, which gets maps of North America and Europe, and the GO 2535M Live, which gets one year of included Live search service. These services include TomTom’s HD Traffic for updates based both on real conditions and on historical trends.

While prices or release dates are not yet known, the new devices are expected to arrive early in March.

Garmin International has announced the creation of OpenCaching.com, a completely free online community for creating, sharing and finding geocaches around the world. An exciting and engaging outdoor activity, geocaching combines exploration, education, entertainment and recreation. At OpenCaching.com, everyone can enjoy all of the caches and helpful information -“ the tips, descriptions, previous attempts, mass downloads, etc. -“ for free.

“Garmin is extending its reputation for ease of use even further into geocaching, creating the most intuitive experience possible,” said Dan Bartel, Garmin’s vice president of worldwide sales. “By making it free and easy to download every detail of every cache, Opencaching.com will introduce more people to this great activity and show them just how fun, easy and rewarding it can be.”

Geocaching is a high-tech treasure hunt where participants of all ages explore the outdoors, hiding and finding containers of various shapes and sizes that are filled with collectables, trinkets and logbooks for signing in and letting fellow cachers know you were there. Creating a cache consists of placing a container in a public area, saving the GPS coordinates and uploading them to a website. Finding a cache is as simple as searching the website and downloading those details to a GPS handheld. As free and open as the great outdoors, OpenCaching.com was created to help promote the growth of geocaching and build the worldwide community of cachers.

The Awesome Factor

OpenCaching.com is meant to give creators and seekers alike a way to quantify the “Awesomeness” of any given cache. While every cache has its enjoyable elements that make it unique, everyone has personal favorites that defy traditional descriptions. For that reason, OpenCaching.com lets users rank the Awesomeness in addition to size, terrain and difficulty. These four factors are displayed in a “bulls-ey”illustration for each cache, giving geocachers a unique and vivid idea of the fun that lies ahead. And cachers themselves can rate these factors, turning the bulls-eye illustration into a true representation of peer reviews.

Open to everyone

The strength of OpenCaching.com lies within the geocaching community, from diehard cachers to families and classrooms trying it for the first time (for which there is an informative how-to guide included on the site). Everyone -“ regardless of experience or numbers of caches found or placed -“ is welcome to the same information and invited to get as involved as they want. OpenCaching.com will work with any device or software package that can read GPX files, regardless of manufacturer.”

Through the recent announcements of OpenCaching.com and the chirp wireless geocaching beacon, geocachers around the world now have exciting new tools to unleash the potential of their creativity. Garmin is just one of countless businesses -“ large and small, corporate and self-owned -“ that make up the interdependent geocaching ecosystem. From collectables to events to software such as mobile, web-based and desktop applications, these creative collaborations stimulate ideas and enthusiasm. Garmin’s goal is to provide even more support and opportunities to the various innovators involved in this global activity.

For cachers who have created or found caches elsewhere, Garmin designed OpenCaching’s cache code system to seamlessly coexist and integrate with other databases, devices and applications. Also, developers can access the OpenCaching.com database through an API, and cache owners can share their information on other sites through the Creative Commons license. Cachers can quickly get credit for cross-listed caches found on other sites and easily add existing caches they own to OpenCaching.com, where they can also be tagged and enhanced with more helpful information.

Geocaching is a hightech version of hide and seek where participants of all ages explore the outdoors in search of hidden treasure.

The chirp can be detected by most of Garmin’s outdoor GPS units and will automatically unlock hints or other details when close by. Its owner has full control on the unit, you can password-lock the beacon, create coordinates for a multi-cache set or check how many users have visited a given chirp unit.

Slightly bigger than a quarter, it’s just 1.3 inches across and is designed to stay hidden. It also designed to last a whole year on single battery and its shell that should withstand typical weather found outdoors during the year.

The chirp is available now and costs $22.99.

Sony has announced its first in-dash car navigation systems for the U.S. market, featuring technology powered by TomTom. Designed to offer drivers the ultimate package of technology, innovation and style, the new XNV-770BT and XNV-660BT A/V navigation systems feature advanced car audio, video and navigational technologies.

“TomTom’s expertise in navigation and our long-standing tradition of premium audio and video are strongly represented with these new in-dash systems,” said Mike Kahn, director of Sony’s mobile music business. “This unique partnership and exciting product offerings represent a huge step forward for Sony in the mobile electronics business.”

Industry-Leading Navigation

Both of Sony’s new systems, the XNV-770BT (7-inch widescreen display) and XNV-660BT (6.1-inch widescreen display) come pre-loaded with TomTom’s extensive map database of both U.S. and Canada roads, with one free year of map upgrades provided at no incremental charge. In the U.S. alone, TomTom maps feature more than 1 million more miles of roads than other GPS brands.

Further, each system will take full advantage of several of TomTom’s advanced navigational technologies, including:

IQ Routes evaluates all route options based on actual traffic speeds rather than posted speed limits, and will recommend the fastest route for the time of day.

Advanced Lane Guidance provides enhanced lane graphics that show which lane to take in complex multi-lane situations.

Quick GPSfix automatically updates satellite locations to get the driver on their way faster.

MapShare from TomTom and its enormous navigation community enables drivers to correct their maps and benefit from changes made by other drivers via your computer and the free software TomTom HOME.

More than 6 million points of interest including gas stations, restaurants, hotels, hospitals and more.

Premium Car Audio and Video

Each of Sony’s new A/V Navigation systems features a high quality WVGA display that offers one of the brightest and highest contract screens available in market today. The XNV-770BT model is a 7-inch, fully capacitive touch motorized panel display and the XNV-660BT model is a 6.1-inch capacitive touch with several hard keys such as volume and key menu buttons.

Both new A/V systems feature rear USB-1 wire connectivity for simple hookup to iPod, iPhone and other digital music players, full Bluetooth capability and a stylish graphical user interface (GUI) that includes large, easy-touch buttons. When listening to a connected device, the music playback screen will display all song metadata and album artwork.

On the audio front, the new XNV-660BT and XNV-770BT models feature multi-channel playback with Center Speaker Organizer (CSO), creating virtual 5.1 channel surround sound throughout the car. The advanced sound engine (ASE) ensures a high-quality, digitally enhanced sound experience and allows users to customize the in-car sound field to match their tastes. Further, Sony’s SensMe feature has the ability to automatically create custom music playlists and radio channels from a connected music library.

Price and Availability

Both the new XNV-770BT and XNV-660BT A/V navigation systems will be available this November for about $1,300 and $1,000, respectively, at www.sonystyle.com, Sony Style retail stores and throughout the Sony authorized dealer network nationwide.

Garmin today announced the touchscreen Edge 800 for cyclists who want accuracy and simplicity when tracking their statistics and location for racing and recreation. Edge 800 seamlessly combines the most popular aspects of the industry-leading Edge 500 and Edge 705 while adding an intuitive touchscreen interface. New mapping options such as Garmin’s BaseCamp route planning and BirdsEye Satellite Imagery make it perfect for training, touring and riding on the trail. Edge 800 will debut at Interbike (Booth 2631) and Eurobike (Booth A5-201), where it won the coveted Eurobike Award for electronic components.

Building on its popular predecessors, Edge 800 is smaller and sleeker than the Edge 705, yet features a larger 2.6″ display with a simple touchscreen interface. And while Edge 800 gets its streamlined design from the ultralight Edge 500, the color display and versatile mapping options make exploration more enjoyable and efficient than ever. The latest version of Garmin’s free BaseCamp software gives users an easy tool to survey the terrain and plan routes. BaseCamp lets users plan and preview routes -“ along with viewing elevation changes -“ and then send those routes to Edge 800, Edge 705 and Edge 605 as courses to follow.

Cyclists can view Team Garmin’s featured rides -“ or download, analyze and share rides of their own -“ at Garmin Connect, the free-to-join online community of more than 30 million activities from around the world. Garmin Connect displays metrics such as time, distance, speed, elevation and heart rate through charts and a variety of map representations, including street, satellite, topographic, and elevation maps. Garmin Connect users can search for activities in their area and try them by uploading the data to Edge 800, which will guide the way.

“I can come back and do even more on the computer when I download it,” said Team Garmin’s Christian Vande Velde of combining Garmin Connect with the Edge products he used in consecutive top-8 finishes at the Tour de France. “It takes all the guessing out of everything in my training.”

Using information directly from GPS satellites, Edge 800 accurately tracks speed, distance, time, GPS position, elevation, calories burned, climb and descent. For even more real-time data on display, Edge 800 syncs wirelessly through ANT+ technology with compatible third-party power meters as well as Garmin heart rate monitors and speed/cadence sensors. For extra-precise climb and descent data, Edge 800 incorporates a barometric altimeter to pinpoint changes in elevation.

Because Edge 800 requires no calibration, it can be switched quickly between bikes thanks to a low-profile, quarter-turn mount that fits easily on the stem or handlebars with tight-gripping rubber rings. Boasting a high-sensitivity GPS receiver with HotFix that quickly acquires and maintains satellite reception, Edge 800 displays temperature readings, changes time zones automatically, lasts up to 15 hours on one charge and alerts riders if they’re moving but the timer has not been started.

As powerful as it is for performance cyclists and speed specialists, various mapping options make Edge 800 an ideal device for singletrack exploration, everyday errands and casual commuting.

On the trails, using a separate TOPO U.S. 24K DVD or microSD card brings you the highest level of topographic detail available, with maps comparable to 1:24,000 scale USGS maps, featuring terrain contours, topo elevations, summits, routable roads and trails, parks, coastlines, rivers, lakes and geographical points. In town, optional City Navigator mapping provides detailed street maps, millions of preloaded points of interest and onscreen turn-by-turn directions to your destination.

Subscribers to BirdsEye Satellite Imagery can quickly transfer high-resolution satellite images to Edge 800 and seamlessly integrate those images into the onscreen maps to get a true representation of the surroundings. And Garmin’s Custom Maps can bring the details, labels and landmarks of your existing paper or electronic map to Edge 800 in just a few simple steps

Cobra has announced the debut of the 7750 Platinum, its new 7″ navigation unit specifically designed for the professional driver. The new 7750 Platinum features enhanced graphics, Junction View with Lane Assist, State Mileage Log, and Hours-of-Service Log. In addition, the new 7750 Platinum features the last-mile routing, offering superior road coverage on secondary highways. The 7750 Platinum is on display in the Cobra booth, #16074, at the upcoming Great American Trucking Show in Dallas, TX August 26-28, 2010.

The enhanced graphics and menu options on the 7750 Platinum provide maximum visibility in sunlight and optimized efficiency when scrolling through searches and settings of the unit. The new Quick-Tabs allow drivers to see critical information such as the distances to weigh stations, travel centers, rest areas and mile markers at a glance. The new Junction View with Lane Assist provides drivers with 3D images of upcoming highway junctions as well as lane guidance and enhanced turn-by-turn directions. Also, new on the 7750 are the State Mileage Log that tracks miles within a state for IFTA reporting and the Hours-of-Service timer that enables drivers to easily track their On-Duty, Off-Duty and Driving Time.

The 7750 Platinum also features the map rated highest in route quality and reliability, based on the results of certified quality testing. The TeleAtlas map in the 7750 Platinum delivers more than 1 million additional miles of road coverage in the US than the competing map. In addition to more miles of road coverage, the 7750 Platinum map provides drivers 17x more last mile (dock-to-dock) coverage and 4x more trucking attribute coverage on secondary highways.

Like its predecessor, the Cobra 7750 Platinum includes the 33,000 ProMiles Software Development Corporation and TruckDown Info International, Inc. truck-specific points of interest (POIs) such as routable travel center locations, detailed amenity information, fueling stations, restaurants, heavy duty towing, truck and trailer repair shops, truck-friendly hotels, weigh stations and certified scales, the most truck-specific POIs in the industry. It also features more than 12 million standard Tele Atlas POIs and branded icons, which visually represent participating businesses as instantly recognizable logos so users can accurately identify specific brands of interest. Lastly, the 7750 Platinum includes 3 months of unlimited downloads from Cobra’s exclusive AURA Camera & Driving Hazard Database, which alerts drivers to the locations of fixed speed and red-light cameras, dangerous intersections and known speed traps.

The Cobra 7750 Platinum will be available at travel centers nationwide for a suggested retail price of $499.95.

Yoda joins Darth Vader and C-3PO and is the latest official Star Wars voice to launch exclusively for TomTom devices. Han Solo will complete the line-up of fan favorites in August.

A powerful Jedi warrior Yoda may be. But his quirky diction and mischievous personality also make him one of the most charming characters in the Star Wars universe -“ and one who adds a whole galaxy of fun to TomTom GPS voice commands. Incorporating dialogue inspired by the original Star Wars films, Yoda’s navigation instructions include “After 700 hundred yards hmm, keep to the right then take a sharp left. Control, control, if a Jedi you wish to be.”

The Yoda voice also comes with ghostly encouragement from Obi-Wan Ben Kenobi, which is taken from the original films and embedded into the navigation commentary. John Williams’ -˜Yoda’s Theme’ music is also interwoven with certain commands, providing a rich, cinematic experience rarely heard on navigation systems.

All official Star Wars voices for TomTom devices are available in English, while Yoda and Darth Vader are also now available in German. Further languages will be available throughout the summer.

Yoda’s voice is available for download now for $12.95.

Well TV failed a few years ago at trying to bring back the 1982 TV hit Knight Rider. But that hasn’t stop NavTone from giving you the Knight Industries Two Thousand, or ‘KITT.’ as a NavTone.

Today NavTones has released a KITT GPS Voice for Garmin nuvi portable navigation devices and the new Android-powered Garminfone from T-Mobile. That is right kids, you too can have William Daniels, reprising his role as the voice for KITT, give turn-by-turn directions.

Once installed, drivers are treated not only to turn-by-turn directions in the voice of KITT, but also to exclusive randomized commentary. In typical KITT fashion, many lines are delivered with a humorous punch such as, “If you’re not going to listen to me, just turn me off” in the event of a route recalculation.

“With our KITT Voice for Garmin GPS, we want to make millions of 1980′s childhood dreams come true,” says Will Andre, CEO of Wanderlust Media, adding, “so we strove to replicate the envied relationship between human and machine made famous on Knight Rider, by randomizing the commentary coming out of the device to create a much more lifelike and dynamic driving experience.”

Personalization

For the first time ever, this is a GPS voice download that calls drivers (or passengers) by name. Just as he did with Michael Knight in every episode of Knight Rider Users can select from more than 700 names.

Price and Download

The KITT voice download is just US$9.95 at http://www.NavTones.com/KITT and installs directly on to any compatible Garmin nuvi device worldwide in just a few simple clicks. For a complete list of compatible devices, please check NavTone’s website.

TomTom has announced that the official voices of Nickelodeon’s Dora the Explorer and SpongeBob SquarePants are now available for users of TomTom devices.

The new voices incorporate dialogue from the Nickelodeon show characters with TomTom device voice commands to help safely and efficiently guide TomTom users to their destinations. Dora the Explorer delivers navigation instructions for the eager explorer, such as, “We need to exit left ahead. ¡Vámonos! We’re getting closer!” and “Adventures are better with an explorer like you.” SpongeBob SquarePants and his friends add humor to the navigation commentary with such comments as, “Hey, I don’t have a license to drive. So is it illegal when I drive Mr. Krabs crazy?” and “Exit ahead. Hey, we’re cruisin’ in a car! I’ve only cruised in a boat before!”

“Working with Spot It Out and Nickelodeon enables TomTom to expand the range we can deliver to drivers so that drivers can personalize their devices with an array of fun personalities,” said Tom Murray, senior vice president of market development. “The voices of Dora the Explorer and SpongeBob SquarePants arrive just in time for TomTom users to enjoy during their summer adventures -“ from camp carpools to vacations -“ and keep the whole family entertained along the way.”

Garminhas announced the GPSMAP 62 series of rugged outdoor handheld devices, bringing a sleek updated look, new mapping options and many technical innovations to a product line beloved by hunters, hikers and geocachers of all ages.

“The GPSMAP 60 series has been one of our most popular product lines, and the new GPSMAP 62 series improves the form and functionality to make a best-in-class device even better,” said Dan Bartel, Garmin’s vice president of worldwide sales. “Whether you’ve been using Garmin for years or are buying your first handheld, GPSMAP 62 is ideal as it combines our new breakthroughs in outdoor recreation technology with the comfortable feel of an old favorite.”

Boasting a 2.6″ sunlight-readable color display, up to 20 hours of battery life and a high-sensitivity GPS receiver and quad helix antenna for unparalleled reception, the GPSMAP 62 series features three distinct waterproof models to suit various activities and interests. The basic GPSMAP 62 includes a built-in worldwide basemap with shaded relief. The GPSMAP 62s adds a 3-axis tilt-compensated electronic compass and wireless connectivity for sharing routes, tracks, waypoints and geocaches between other compatible Garmin handhelds. GPSMAP 62s also includes a barometric altimeter that tracks changes in pressure to pinpoint your precise altitude. Users can also plot barometric pressure over time, which can help keep an eye on changing weather conditions. In addition to these key features, GPSMAP 62st includes preloaded 100K topographic maps for the entire United States (or preloaded 50K topographic mapping of Canada for the Canadian version). Coverage on GPSMAP 62st includes major trails, urban and rural roads, interstates, highways, coastlines, rivers and lakes as well as national, state and local parks, forests and wilderness areas. In addition, you can search for points of interest by name or proximity to your location and view descriptive details for terrain contours, topo elevations, summits and geographical points.

Experiences will live on long after the activity has ended, thanks to Garmin Connect, the free-to-join online community of more than 20 million activities for sharing, storing, analyzing and enjoying at garminconnect.com. Outdoor and fitness enthusiasts alike can share activities on Facebook and Twitter, export to Google Earth or relive the activity in table view, calendar view or on a variety of maps including our new embedded Google Earth view.

Each device in the GPSMAP 62 series has a high-sensitivity GPS receiver with HotFix, which automatically calculates and stores critical satellite information and can use that information to quickly calculate a position. The GPSMAP 62 series is made even more versatile through its universal mounting system that is compatible with the same accessories as Garmin’s Oregon, Dakota and Colorado products. Other key upgrades include photo navigation and onboard memory for downloading maps. GPSMAP 62 and GPSMAP 62st models also feature high-speed USB for faster map transfers with your computer, as well as a 3-axis tilt-compensated electronic compass, which shows the user’s heading even when standing still, without the need to hold it level. In addition to the preloaded topographic details for the entire United States, GPSMAP 62st features 500 MB of available built-in memory. GPSMAP 62 and GPSMAP 62s are ready to be customized to fit any user’s activity, thanks to 1.7 GB of onboard memory.

TomTom has previewed the Go Live 1000, the first in a whole new generation of navigation devices, designed to bring real-time services to millions of drivers. The new TomTom Go Live 1000 is the first TomTom product completely designed for connectivity. Based around a powerful ARM 11 500 Mhz processor, the device also showcases a new Webkit-based user interface and the latest capacitive touch screen technology.

The software and service delivery platform have been optimised for rapid integration of third party applications and easy localisation to match the needs of specific markets or applications. The back end server systems have been completely redesigned, allowing effortless delivery of rich content and downloadable applications, via cable or over the air. All this also makes the TomTom Go Live 1000 future proof. It will be much easier than ever before to receive the latest content and relevant information instantly.

Working with partner Vodafone, TomTom has pioneered an innovative new business model, delivering real-time connectivity seamlessly across 33 European countries for the first time. With the Go Live 1000 there is no need for subscription or activation, as a full year of services* is now included with the device. This suite of services includes TomTom HD Traffic, mobile speed cameras and local search in 16 countries.

TomTom is committed to providing motorists with the best routing technology possible, developing industry firsts IQ Routes and HD Traffic. For the new platform, TomTom engineers were tasked to design a new routing algorithm that continuously scans the road network for the fastest routes, using these layers of navigation information. This has resulted in a patented super fast routing algorithm that sets new standards in accuracy and speed. And user interface enhancements give drivers a better visual understanding of traffic conditions.

The new user interface and application logic is designed to be feature rich and easy to use. To existing TomTom users, the product will have the familiar TomTom feel, but it does that in a richer graphical environment. The new capacitive touch screen is designed to offer crystal clear graphics at high resolution.

“Our customers are relying increasingly on their navigation devices and it is no longer about the destination alone, but also very much about the journey itself”, said Corinne Vigreux, managing director TomTom. “The Go Live 1000 has been designed to make the journey a relaxed, predictable, safe and enjoyable experience. Thanks to our technologies we know the road ahead and what is happening on the journey. The Go Live 1000 will get our customers to their destination easier, safer and faster than ever before.”

Richer and more detailed maps, covering two million kilometres more roads and addressable locations across 45 European countries, ensure drivers never have to waste time looking for valuable information regarding their route. Also, a new Park Assist feature automatically informs drivers of car parks near their destination.

The TomTom Go Live 1000 will be available in the summer.

DataArt announced today that it has completed back-end development of GeoLife’s Navmii turn-by-turn navigation application for the iPod touch. While such applications are already available for the iPhone, Navmii is the first to bring GPS navigation with smart routing, interactive maps and spoken directions to the iPod touch. Navmii for iPhone and the iPod touch will be available in the U.S. this winter.

DataArt matched GeoLife’s Navmii software with PosiMotion’s G-Fi mobile network / GPS router to develop the application, which is now available on the Apple iTunes App Store. The new application uses G-Fi’s satellite GPS for more accurate positioning than standard cellular or Bluetooth triangulation.

“Outside of a GPS manufacturer, it’s very hard -“ and rare -“ to find the type of technical expertise in an outsourcing company that’s needed for this type of application,” said Peter Atalla, CEO of GeoLife. “DataArt’s deep expertise in both navigation and LBS technologies made them a natural choice. We’ve worked with DataArt for more than two years on similar projects that required rapid delivery and have consistently been impressed with the level of innovation.”

“Location based services are increasingly playing a role in the mobile sector,” said Eugene Goland, president of DataArt. “Navmii is a leap forward for these technologies, and DataArt plans to further establish itself as a vendor of choice for developing mobile software solutions.”

Navmii will be available in the U.S. for the iPod touch and iPhone within the coming months and is currently available in the UK. iPod touch users will require both Navmii and G-Fi.

Garmin International has announced the nüvi 1690, a portable navigation device (PND) with a built-in wireless module that lets customers tap into Garmin’s nüLink! service that provides direct links to certain online information like Google local search, traffic, weather, fuel prices, movie listings, flight status, local events, white page telephone listings and Ciao!, Garmin’s exclusive location-based social networking system that connects multiple networks into a single portal for Garmin users. The U.S. version of the nüvi 1690 comes with two years of free Garmin nüLink! service, which makes it the first PND to offer an extended period of online features included in the purchase price of the device.

“Our customers want and need accurate, up-to-the-minute information that they can access quickly and without hassles,” said Dan Bartel, Garmin’s vice president of worldwide sales. “The nüvi 1690 meets these expectations by combining the power of Google’s local search and other compelling online services with preloaded maps and points of interest for the ultimate navigation experience. And best of all, the nüvi 1690 includes two years of Garmin nüLink! service out-of-the-box, eliminating any hesitation that customers might have about paying for these premium services.”

The nüvi 1690 with nüLink! has the most comprehensive set of POI search capabilities offered by any PND thanks to the implementation of Google local search and white page telephone listings. Google’s local search brings online points of interest (POIs) to customers’ fingertips and lets them search for destinations by name or key words just like they are accustomed to doing on their personal computer. In addition, Garmin has created a “quick search” feature that lets users search via categories like food, lodging and fuel, rather than typing a word or phrase into the search box. Detailed search results are displayed for many POIs including a location description, business address, phone number and popularity rating. Customers can also use the nüLink! white page telephone listing feature to search for a person’s street address by their first name, last name or phone number.

In addition to the local search capabilities, Garmin nüLink! offers a plethora of other online services. Local events and movie listings help customers find interesting activities wherever they might travel. Real-time flight status takes the stress out of traveling to the airport with up-to-the minute arrival and departure information for major air carriers. And the Garmin nüLink! traffic feature provides the best-in-class information from NAVTEQ to help customers navigate in and around congestion.

Customers can also opt to use the nüvi 1690′s preloaded POI database to search for a location and then receive turn-by-turn, voice prompted directions to the destination. The nüvi 1690 includes lane assist with junction view so drivers will see a realistic presentation of road signs and junctions along the route, as well as arrows that indicate the proper lane for navigation. These features make it easy to navigate unfamiliar intersections and exits because the nüvi guides drivers to the correct lane for an approaching turn or exit. Map and traffic data is provided by NAVTEQ -“ a world leader in premium-quality mapping.

The nüvi 1690 is also Garmin’s first mobile navigation device to transform traditional social networking into location-enabled social networking. Through Ciao!, a patent-pending social network application that links multiple location-centric social networks onto one application, customers have the option of sharing their whereabouts with friends and family. Ciao! users will see their friends’ location on a map and then be able to navigate to that location. Ciao! currently aggregates information from GyPSii and uLocate’s Buddy Beacon social network services. Ciao! is expandable and additional social network partners are expected in the future.

The nüvi 1690 comes standard with ecoRoute, an innovative application that helps customers stretch their dollars and conserve fuel by creating routes that are optimized for using less fuel. When a user selects the “less fuel” option, the nüvi will determine a fuel efficient route based on fuel consumption rates, estimated driving speeds and vehicle acceleration data. Customers can then develop better driving habits by reviewing the results of ecoRoute’s Fuel Report and Mileage Report. When used in combination with nüLink!’s fuel prices, customers can not only optimize their routes but also can choose their refueling locations in order to minimize the cost of vehicle operation.

The nüvi 1690 also has Bluetooth Wireless Technology that makes it possible to receive and place phone calls directly from the nüvi. It can be paired with over 200 Bluetooth enabled phones, and a driver can retrieve and dial numbers using a supported phone’s contact list, the phone’s call history log, or the nüvi’s preloaded points of interest database.

The U.S. version of the nüvi 1690 has preloaded maps of North America and is expected to be available in the fourth quarter for a manufacturer’s suggested retail price of $499.99. In the U.S., the first two years of Garmin nüLink! is free, and after that, the subscription renewal price for data services is $5.00/month.

Garmin International has announced the aerodynamic Edge 500, an evolutionary leap in cycling technology. Weighing a mere 2 ounces, Edge 500 features a high-sensitivity GPS receiver, requires no calibration, can be switched quickly and easily between bicycles and connects wirelessly with ANT+ compatible third-party power meters.

“Using feedback from the best focus group imaginable -“ the Pro Tour cyclists of Team Garmin-Slipstream, we’ve developed a lightweight cycling computer that’s powerful enough for the pros yet simple enough for beginners,” said Dan Bartel, Garmin’s vice president of worldwide sales. “Sitting sleek and snug on a redesigned handlebar mount, Edge 500 streamlines your cycling statistics for a fraction of the cost of comparable head units.”

Designed for performance cyclists, the GPS-enabled Edge 500 tracks speed, distance, time, GPS position, elevation, calories burned, climb and descent. For extra-precise climb and descent data, Edge 500 incorporates a barometric altimeter to pinpoint changes in elevation. Combining more data than ever into one device, Edge 500 syncs wirelessly through ANT+ technology with compatible third-party power meters. Edge 500 also pairs wirelessly with Garmin speed/cadence sensors and features advanced heart rate-based calorie computation when used with a Garmin heart rate monitor. Boasting a high-sensitivity GPS receiver with HotFix that quickly acquires and maintains satellite reception, the Edge 500 also displays temperature readings, changes time zones automatically and alerts riders if they’re moving but the timer is not running. With up to 18 hours of battery life, Edge 500 features a low-profile, quarter-turn mount that fits easily on the stem or handlebars.

When paired with a Garmin heart rate monitor, Edge 500 tracks the micro changes in a user’s heart rate and uses that detailed information to better calculate the number of calories burned. Cyclists can track Team Garmin’s featured rides -“ or download, analyze and share rides of their own – by participating in Garmin ConnectSM, an online community that brings together millions of activities around the world. Garmin Connect displays metrics such as time, distance, speed, elevation and heart rate. This information is shown through charts, illustrations, reports and a variety of map representations including street, photo, topographic, and elevation maps as well as the popular Google Earth application. Garmin Connect users can search for activities in their area and try the activities for themselves by uploading the data to Garmin devices, which will then guide the way.

Featuring a USB interface for easy charging and data transfer, Edge 500 has a suggested retail price of $249.99. When bundled with a heart rate monitor and speed/cadence sensor, Edge 500 has a suggested retail price of $349.99.
