Nvidia has updated its latest mobile chipset with support for Category 4 LTE connectivity. Tegra 4i, similar to Tegra 4 but includes an integrated Nvidia i500 LTE modem, managed to upgrade from Category 3 and its 100Mbps connection to LTE-Advanced and a possible 150Mps speed, without performing any changes to the hardware.

The upgrade was accomplished with changes in software alone. The i500 LTE modem is a software-defined radio that uses Deep Execution Processors, and so was able to be changed without altering anything to it or Tegra 4i at all physically. The use of a software-defined modem also allows it to take up far less space in the chipset itself, allowing more room for other components.

Demonstrations at the CTIA event in Las Vegas shows Tegra 4i working on an LTE-Advanced network at 150Mbps, though emulated due to the lack of live networks using such Category 4 connections. The Phoenix Tegra 4i smartphone is also being demonstrated on a live AT&T LTE network, in order to show off the performance and stability of the software modem when used for voice calls and video streaming.

The ZaggKeys Cover for the iPad mini, pictured, is the latest in its iPad line of popular keyboard covers. According to the company, it is the thinnest Bluetooth keyboard accessory for the iPad mini available, measuring just 6.3mm (0.25-inch) thick. It also incorporates backlit keys with seven color options and three lighting levels.

The hinge on the ZaggKeys Cover allows users to position an iPad mini at multiple angles, as well as reverse the iPad mini for one-piece reading or for viewing movies and playing games. The inbuilt battery keeps the cover powered for up to three months of regular use before it needs to be recharged. It will be available in black and silver options for $100.

The ZaggKeys Folio is also aiming for the title of the thinnest folio keyboard cover available, at 6.9mm (0.27 inches) thickness. Like the ZaggKeys Cover, the Folio’s hinge also allows an iPad mini to be positioned in a wide range of angles and incorporates the same keyboard backlighting. Its inbuilt battery is also good for three months on a charge while it too will retail for $100 and will be available in black and white, with other colors arriving by fall.

In addition to featuring increase image accuracy and precision capture, the unit now comes bundled with NewSoft software for Macs, including Presto Pagemanager 9 for scanning images and doing OCR on the scanner as well as Presto BizCard Xpress business card-scanning software.

Both programs have been customized to include Kodak’s “Perfect Page” technology, allowing users to convert files to searchable PDFs, emails, printed copies, or store documents locally. Scans can also be synced to Google Docs or Evernote.

The i940 itself features simultaneous creation of color or B&W versions of scanned documents, and includes auto-cropping, de-skewing, image rotation, auto-brightness and auto-contrast. The unit can hold up to 20 documents at a time using its automatic document feeder. It can capture images at 20 pages per minute (ppm) or up to 40 ppm in B&W or grayscale mode. The unit can work on USB power only, making it usable as a portable scanner — but reduces operations to a maximum of 8ppm at 200 dpi.

The US version of the i940 for Mac users is sold as the i940M in North America, and retails for $499. It works with OS X 10.6 and higher. The European version sells for €440 ($565).

Dell has lowered the price of its Windows RT tablet from $449 to $299. The drop in price of the XPS 10 slate, possibly due to the underwhelming sales of Windows RT-based tablets across the industry, is accompanied by discounted additions to the tablet, including the keyboard dock and doubling the internal storage.

Increasing the initial 32GB of storage to 64GB costs an extra $50, instead of the $100 it would have cost previously, according to Engadget, with the optional keyboard dock available as a $50 extra in a bundle. Adding a case costs $30, down from $40, but putting 4G LTE onto the tablet remains the same, priced as a $100 extra.

Windows RT has generally seen sluggish sales, with even Microsoft’s own Surface failing to gain any significant traction. The software maker has reportedly updated its requirements to allow smaller form factor devices, such as those with a 7 or 8-inch screen, to exist. This could theoretically allow for cheaper Windows 8 and Windows RT tablets to go on sale.

The revised version of the compact four-in-one device is now available with CD and DVD read-only and writable drives, adding to the already-available Blu-ray versions customers can purchase.

The rest of the MiniStack Max remains the same as before. Taking up the same physical space as a Mac Mini and designed to stack with it, the MiniStack Max can hold up to 4TB of data on its 7200rpm internal hard disk, can read SD cards, and can also act as a USB powered hub. Connection to the PC or Mac is done over USB 3.0, USB 2.0, Firewire 800, Firewire 400, and eSATA, though there is still not an option to connect over Thunderbolt.

Available as a bare unit without storage for $150, the MiniStack Max starts from $230 including a DVD writer and 500GB of storage, going up to $500 for the 4TB version. Versions able to read Blu-ray discs range from $360 to $530, and with a Blu-ray writer ranges from $300 to $570.

Nvidia’s forthcoming Tegra 4 chip may have received an early benchmark if an AnTuTu score that has been posted online is to be believed. According to the post, the Tegra 4 produced a score of over 32,000 points, outgunning the 1.9GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon 600 found in the Samsung Galaxy S4. By comparison, the Galaxy S4’s Snapdragon chip produces a score of 25,000 points, while the HTC One with the same Snapdragon chip clocked at 1.7GHz scores 23,600 points.

The figure comes out of China running on what is purported to be Nvidia’s Project Shield Android-powered handheld gaming console. The Project Shield device, first shown at CES in January, is tracking for between Q2 and Q3. It is possible that a developer ran the test with early access to a Project Shield device, or it is a leaked factory prototype.

Or, it also possible that the figures in the AnTuTu benchmark have been faked. Regardless, the result is not beyond the realms of possibility and is probably in line with expectations. It is not until Qualcomm releases the Snapdragon 800 clocking up to 2.3GHz that the performance tables may be turned back in Qualcomm’s favor.

Western Digital has revealed it is working with SanDisk for its 5mm (0.2-inches) thick solid state hybrid drives (SSHD) that it revealed last month. The WD Black SSHD storage, aimed at notebook manufacturers aiming to create thinner devices, uses SanDisk’s flash memory technology for the solid-state portion, which works alongside the WD-created hard disk.

Using the SanDisk iSSD flash storage device, which is said to be suitable for the drive thanks to being compact, low-powered, and claimed high performance and reliability, the 2.5-inch drive is able to use the iSSD as a caching drive for the main 500GB WD storage, allowing for potentially faster data transfer speeds due to reduced need to seek on the spinning platters.

It has previously been revealed that the new drive design reduces weight compared to conventional drives by up to 36 percent, and is said to be quieter and shockproof to 1000G. Due to its thin form, the drive uses a new edge connector that combines the data connection and power feed.

Currently, WD is shipping 5mm WD Black SSHD storage to OEMs, along with 7mm and 9.5mm models. Availability of the 5mm drives to end users and prices have yet to be revealed.

Bose says the AE2w will work up to 30 feet away from the device that is paired with, while its built-in rechargeable lithium-ion batteries are good for up to 200 hours of stand-by time, or up to 7 hours on the go. The AE2w’s can also be paired with up two devices simultaneously, allowing a user to watch a movie on their tablet, while being able to interrupt the session and take a call at the same time. The Bluetooth control module also includes LED and audio indicators to provide information on power, battery life and Bluetooth connections.

The Bose AE2w Bluetooth headphones are retailing for $250 and can be purchased directly through its online store. A limited offer of free shipping is currently available at the time of writing.

A Windows 8 tablet aimed at business professionals has been unveiled by Toshiba, shortly after the company presented its high-resolution Kirabook. The WT310 tablet houses a 11.6-inch 1080p anti-glare display with gesture-enabled touchscreen controls, and an accompanying DigitizerPen as an additional input option.

Housed in a plastic casing said to protect the internals from drops and shocks, the WT310 has an unnamed Intel processor inside, and eschews the hard disk as storage in favor of an SSD with unannounced capacity. Ports for HDMI, USB 3.0, Gigabit Ethernet and an SD card slot surround the WT310, while connectivity is also provided over Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 4.0, and HSPA+/LTE.

Intel Anti-Theft, software to help prevent unauthorized access, and the Trusted Platform Module are included for data security, with Intel Active Management included to help IT managers maintain the roaming devices. Professionals will also be able to use the included Intel Wireless Display to transfer content to a compatible TV or projector wirelessly, for simpler set-up for presentations.

Toshiba is lining up the WT310 for a UK release sometime in the second quarter, but has not revealed pricing details. A US release could take place shortly afterwards.

In Intel’s second major technology announcement in the span of a week, the chip manufacturer has revealed a refresh of its Atom processor line. Intel’s new “Silvermont” architecture promises faster speeds, lower power draw with what the company calls best in class performance plus power efficiency.

The renovation is the first Atom line using a 22nm fabrication process, with plans to migrate to 14nm with the upcoming Airmont line and a future line as yet unnamed. The company calls the Silvermont like the first in a family of yearly refreshes.

Specifics for the chip line were slim at today’s announcement, but Intel did note that the chip is aimed at a “wide range of low power products” from phones to servers. The chip line is said to have a three times greater peak performance over the previous line, or the same performance with only 20 percent of the power consumption.

Enhancements in the chip line include an Out-of-Order Execution engine, up to eight cores on one processor, new IA instructions including Core Westmere SSE4.1, SSE4.2, and AES-N. Intels’ new security and virtualization technologies are also integrated with Intel OS Guard, and support for McAfee DeepSAFE.

While GUIs for OS’s and CE devices have improved greatly over the years, there has been one major exception – the GUI for the motherboard BIOS. While we have moved over to UEFI for BIOS, the pace of UI improvements hasn’t done much in the last ten years- adding mouse support wasn’t enough folks.

It looks like Gigabyte is planning on doing something about the problem. Below is a teaser image from their Facebook Page,

Based on the image Gigabyte seems to plan to offer a highly customizable and high-resolution UEFI BIOS for the company’s upcoming Z87 “Haswell” motherboards.

Though all the details have been masked, it is readily apparent that the vast majority of real-time system data is available on the UEFI’s main screen, ending the need to navigate through a multitude of submenus to access this information. The firmware also appears to be highly customizable, offering users the ability to create custom tabs such as the one labelled “performance” in the teaser image.

We look forward to this Gigabyte’s and Way to Go!!!!

Acer is adding a new line of Windows 8 based Aspire R7 laptops to its hardware lineup, capping off a busy week which also sees it introducing a new Aconia A1 line of ultra low cost Android tablets while also unwittingly announcing the first eight inch Windows 8 tablet.

The Aspire R7, which the company teased in a Star Trek video last week is of particular note in that it’s a new kind of laptop-tablet hybrid, relying on Ezel technology to transfer the screen back and forth for either keyboard or touchscreen input, and offers an entirely different take on the Windows 8 hybrid theory than Microsoft’s own Surface Pro which is more of a tablet than a PC.

While Acer intended to introduce the Aspire R7, another Windows 8 based product slipped out unintentionally. Amazon accidentally posted an early listing for Acer’s new Windows 8 based tablet, the first eight inch tablet from any vendor to run the Windows 8 operating system, ahead of even Microsoft itself.

Elsewhere Acer has introduced the Aconia A1 in a bid to see just how low it can go in terms of specs and pricing in the seven inch Android tablet arena. The $169 tablet doesn’t do much, but it doesn’t much either. The tiny price tag on the A1 tablet stands in sharp contrast to the company’s Aspire R7 touchscreen laptop, which is debuting for about a thousand dollars. The video below give you a good show about the different ways you can use the R7, so be sure and check it out.

Barnes & Noble is boosting the number of apps available for its Nook HD and Nook HD+ tablets, by adding the Google Play store. The software update will add Play alongside the company’s own app store, boosting the number of apps available to its users by over 700,000, along with the millions of songs found on Google Play Music, and other Google-supplied content.

As part of the software update, the tablets will also receive access to standard Google services found on other devices, including the Chrome browser, Gmail, YouTube, Google Search, and Google Maps. Users will soon see a notification for an automatic over-the-air update over Wi-Fi from later today.

The addition of Google services to the Nook HD and Nook HD+ is an interesting maneuver by Barnes & Noble. Until this point, the Nook HD and Kindle Fire tablets from Amazon were in self-contained ecosystems, requiring the use of their own app and book stores for content. By Barnes & Noble opting to add Google services and the Google Play store to supplement its own offering, this leaves Amazon as the only major Android tablet provider left that avoids Google integration.

Until now, 21.5-inch iMacs were limited either to a 1TB hard drive or a Fusion Drive, Apple’s HDD/SSD pairing. 27-inch iMacs had options for 1TB and 3TB hard drives or Fusion Drives, as well as a 768GB SSD. The addition of smaller SSD options should be particularly useful for 27-inch iMac buyers who need performance but not a large amount of storage.

First announced at CES 2011, the Express Dock was originally expected to be launched in September 2012. However, various setbacks and revisions continually pushed this date back until Belkin finally began accepting pre-orders this past February.

The final revision is being sold for $300 and features eight ports, one FireWire 800, one Gigabit Ethernet, three USB 3.0, one 3.5mm audio-in, one 3.5mm audio out, and one Thunderbolt port, that can simultaneously be connected to a computer through a single Thunderbolt cable.

Wacom has revised its Cintiq 22HD display-based input device to include touch controls. The Cintiq 22HD touch, much like the larger Cintiq 24HD touch, introduces multitouch to the stylus-based drawing surface, allowing artists and designers to use gestures for rotating canvases, zooming and panning their work.

Primarily using a 21.5-inch full HD display on an ergonomic rotating stand that can sit between a 10-degree and 65-degree incline for comfort, the Cintiq 22HD provides 16 customizable shortcut keys dubbed ExpressKeys, as well as user-defined Touch Strips on the back of display for other functions. The stylus retains its 2048 levels of pressure sensitivity, while the overall weight of the system has been reduced from 33.7 pounds to 18.5 pounds with the stand, 14.7 pounds without.

Just as adding multi-touch capabilities to the Cintiq 24HD added a hefty margin to the price, the Cintiq 22HD touch costs $2,500, a $500 premium on the non-touch version. Wacom will start shipping the Cintiq 22HD touch in May.
