Cadillac Will Have Have An Exclusive Engine In 2019

For the first time in over a quarter of century, Cadillac will have an exclusive engine — a 4.2-liter twin-turbo V-8. The new engine makes good on a 2016 promise by brand President Johan de Nysschen.

The limited-production engine will bb hand-assembled and signed by the builder at the Chevrolet Corvette plant in Bowling Green, Ky.

The 2019 Cadillac CT6, will be the first vehicle equipped with the new engine, Cadillac officials said. Two versions of the engine are planned.  The CT6 V-Sport will be powered by the 550-hp engine,while 500-hp version will be available in other CT6 models,.

The 4.2-liter is a quad-cam, 32-valve, direct-injected aluminum motor. The two turbochargers and the catalytic converters are placed between the banks of cylinders. The design, known as the “hot V,” is used by Cadillac’s chief German rivals.

4.2-liter preliminary specs:

  • Block: 90-degree V with five cross-bolted main bearing caps; sand-cast aluminum with pressed-in iron cylinder liners
  • Bore/stroke: 3.39 in. x 3.35 in./86 mm x 90.2 mm
  • Crankshaft: Forged steel
  • Pistons: High-strength hypereutectic aluminum with friction-reducing polymer skirt coating
  • Rods: Forged aluminum with floating wrist pins
  • Compression ratio: 9.8:1
  • Turbochargers: Two low-inertia twin scroll with electronically controlled wastegates and water-to-air intercooling
