Variety reports that writer David Koepp, who previously penned Jurassic Park, Spider-Man, Mission: Impossible, and War of the Worlds, is now in talks to write Universal’s big screen reboot of Bride of Frankenstein. Details on the film are being kept under wraps though the film will reportedly take place in the present in order to maintain connectivity to the other planned Universal Monster movies.

It was previously reported that Angelina Jolie was being courted to star in the film, and the outlet reveals that not only is that true but Universal is keen to have Jolie direct the film. The actress will reportedly not make the decision until the script has been completed.

The original Bride of Frankenstein was directed by James Whale and starred Boris Karloff as the monster and Elsa Lanchester as the titular bride, continuing the story that began with 1931’s Frankenstein. Compared to its predecessor it was a much lighter, more surreal film made with a certain degree of mocking meta humor, including an opening featuring Lanchester as author Mary Shelley.

The other Universal Monsters currently in development for the scary “shared universe” include The Mummy, which Alex Kurtzman will direct from a script by Jon Spaihts (Prometheus), The Wolfman, currently being penned by Prisoners scribe Aaron Guzikowski, Dracula, and the thread tying them all together, Van Helsing.
